Occupation of Coruscant (3622 BBY)[]
During the Fall of Coruscant to the Sith Empire, Sith Empress Liana Ascalia marched to the Palace of the Senate and interrupted the ongoing session. She then demanded the Galactic Senate to elect her chancellor. When they refused, she threatened to murder everyone present, after which an absolute majority agreed to elect her Supreme Chancellor. However, her election was disputed and she never held any effective authority outside of occupied Republic territory.

Republic-in-exile and partial restoration (3622 BBY – 3615 BBY)[]
Despite the Fall of Coruscant, most of the planets in the Galactic Republic refused to surrender to the Galactic Commonwealth. Connor Zavarai, elected Chancellor after the Senate reconvened on Ascendiai, headed the government of the Galactic Republic after the loss of Coruscant. With much of its armada destroyed however, the Republic fought a difficult war against the new Commonwealth. After the revelation of the superweapon Liberator, which was tested on Zakuul, virtually all worlds surrendered to the Commonwealth, with the rest being blockaded until they submitted. By the end of 3622 BBY, the Commonwealth ruled most of the galaxy.
