Lightsabers were weapons used by many practitioners of the Force, including the Jedi. Early lightsabers, called protosabers, were first developed by the Jedi Order in 15,500 BBY. At that time, however, lightsabers required back-mounted power cells for use. It was not until 13,500 BBY that lightsabers no longer needed the large, back-mounted power cells for use.[1] After the Alsakan Crisis, the Galactic Republic discovered an alloy called cortosis, allowing for the creation of lightsaber-resistant swords.[2] Thousands of years later, in 7 ABY, the Lanmaw family on Alderaan used lightsabers, which they called shods, as tools in the herding of nerfs.[3]
