An essential part of the Order, membership of Krevaaki Jedi can be dated all the way back to our origins on Tython. Despite a high number of Krevaaki Jedi, they are not often seen at the forefront of the Order. They exist in the background, maintaining our Archives, designing our ships, and training our youth.
—Horen Hote, writing about Krevaaki in the Jedi Order.
Biology and appearance[]
Krevaaki were a sentient species that belonged to the gecarcinidae subgroup of the decapoda order of crustaceans. Krevaaki were hexapedal beings with a bilateral symmetry, having a front and a back end, as well as an upside and downside. Their bodies were comprised of three tagmata, specialized groupings of multiple segments: a five-segmented head, an eight-segmented thorax and an abdomen with six segments. A Krevaaki head bore two sets of antennae that ran down the backs of their head and were used to sense disturbances in the atmosphere and aided in sensory perception. The head's structure was supported by a lateral spine, which hooked down towards the rostrum at the center of the face. A short, segmented snout-like protrusion, the rostrum covered a pair of mandibles, around which dangled six maxillules used to push food into the the mouth. Olfactory nodes on the maxillules allowed for the Krevaaki to detect odor in the atmosphere within their immediate surroundings. To either side of the rostrum was a pair of compound eyes which could see well in both underwater and terrestrial environment. While they had no color vision, Krevaaki could interpret the ultra-violet spectrum to see hues of greens and blues. Connecting from their lateral spine and the rostrum were a coil of gills on either side of the hill that filtered oxygen from the water and the air, processing the latter through a set of lungs located high in the thorax. The thorax was segmented into eight parts, fused with the head to give the Krevaaki a neckless, hunched appearance. The red protective shell of the Krevaaki carapace encased the supple, fleshy parts beneath and was segmented in ways to allow for maximum flexibility. The Krevaaki's abdomen consisted of eight tentacle-like appendages used for clawing and grasping. Of the eight, the two dactylus had a small protrusion near the end which served as an opposable thumb. The other six appendages were capable of forming a strong upward support structure for the Krevaaki, giving the species an average height of two standard meters.
A carnivorous species, the Krevaaki digestive tract was straight and the foregut consisted of a short esophagus and a two-chambered stomach, the first part of which contained a gizzard-like "gastric mill" for grinding food. The walls of the mill had chitinous ridges, teeth and calcareous ossicles that obliterated the animal-based food matter. Like other crustaceans, Krevaaki had an open circulatory system in which the heart pumped blood into the hemocoel cavity where it supplied the needs of the organs for oxygen and nutrients before diffusing back to the heart. Structures that function as kidneys were located near the base of the antennae. A brain in the form of ganglia close to the antennae, was capable of self-reflection and deep thought on the world. Because the Krevaaki were cold-blooded, they did not have to keep their body temperatures up as long as they don't let them drop below freezing. Krevaaki had two sexes: male and female, with the latter being distinguished by their overall smaller stature and feather-like appendages along their thorax used for carrying eggs. A sexually-reproduced species, Krevaaki females hold a large number of eggs close on their chest where the male fertilizes them and they grow in size until they can be released into water. After several weeks of developing in their egg, a young Krevaaki larva emerges in the form of a naupliar. Krevaaki larva had three pairs of appendages, all emerging from the head, and a single eye. When their tentacles began to form and separate into several different appendages, the Krevaaki entered into their post-larval phase and were considered young adults. Members of the Krevaaki species could not interbreed naturally with any other species.
Possessing overall physiological uniformity, Krevaaki generally all bore the same physical appearance. Krevaaki were not completely hairless, growing large tufts of hair behind their head ranging in color from gray to black. According to the Accords of Krevas, the legal transition from childhood to adulthood was only attained after eighteen standard years of life. Krevaaki had an average lifespan of 100 standard years. Those who were keenly attuned to the Force could live up to 200. At any rate, individuals past the age of 130 were considered to have reached an age worthy of veneration. Natural signs of ageing in Krevaaki included the whitening or fall of hair, the loss of tentacles, and dulling of carapace color. Old Krevaaki would experience a decline in many cognitive processes, frequently losing track of time, misidentifying people or places and, in extreme cases, momentarily forgetting about their own identity or state.
Society and culture[]
Government[]
A pacifist society, the Krevaaki history is a tale of inclusiveness and compassion. Working towards a common goal, the Krevaaki chose to create a parliamentary system of governance, so that one caste of citizens may devote their lives to governing so that the others could enjoy the fruits of their labor. Members of parliament were well paid for their tedious task of running a planetary government, and were viewed as selfless beings for giving up their freedom and peace of mind in order to serve the greater good of society.
Technology[]
Despite the significant hurtle of lacking dexterous digits to assist in the fine manipulation of tools, the Krevaaki were a technologically advanced society and were capable of space flight by the dawn of the Galactic Republic. Despite these advances, the Krevaaki resisted the major expansion of industry on their homeworld, ensuring that water quality and ecosystem health was preserved throughout their history of development. Seventy percent of the planet's surface was unblemished by artificial ground cover as the Krevaaki established their great cities on stilts early on in their history. As time progressed, the Krevaaki learned to harness repulsor technology and circa 10,000 BrS the Parliament approved construction of the first floating city. Large floating platforms, tethered to the surface by thick cables, house open-air cities that quietly hover several hundred feet off the ground over water and the glowing forests that cover the land.
Customs[]
A species devoted to the study of the Force, the Krevaaki view this eternal power as a galactic energy which calls to every being and encourages exploration. Pacifists, the Krevaaki lived in great floating cities so as to avoid marring the surface of Krevas and destroying its ethereal beauty. These cities consist of squat, communal houses built around a central pool where communities gather for daily ritual and contemplation. Krevas is also home to large libraries, temples, and meditation swamps, where the Krevaaki may conduct their studies in peace and tranquility. Learning is the primary duty of all adult Krevaaki, while their currency is a sound education; the greater ones knowledge, the more wealthy they would be. The most respected members of society were the most learned, a characteristic judged by their wisdom, their ability to adjust to new findings, and a strong sense of humor. Regarding the last quality, Krevaaki prized humor as an expression of great knowledge: only the wisest could see past the troubles of the world to understand that all is joyous within the Force. Great arenas formed the center of each city where mummers would put on a great farce for all the city to enjoy.
History[]
Developing an advanced society early on in the post-Celestial galaxy, Krevaaki were a space-faring race by the time the Galactic Republic explored beyond the Core. Located alongside the Perlemian Trade Route, Krevas did not attract many visitors due to the dimness of its star and the excessive ultra-violet radiation the planet was subjected to by its sun. A Force-worshiping species, Krevaaki had long studied the mysteries of the Force, and many of their greatest scholars and mystics had been taken to Tython in the ancient past by the Tho Yor. Unbeknownst to the rest of the Krevaaki, these pilgrims went on to found what would later be known as the Jedi Order in conjunction with the other species brought to Tython. On Krevas, Krevaaki were pacifist in nature and enjoyed exploring the galaxy to further ponder the Force. When interacting with aliens, Krevaaki often disguised their tentacled lower body to avoid the judgment of bipedal species. The movement of the chitinous parts of the Krevaaki face was considered unnerving by non-Krevaaki and the species developed a reputation for being stoics.
Becoming a part of the galactic community, most Krevaaki sought to assimilate peacefully with other cultures and to expand their knowledge base. Krevaaki found work as fringers and navigators, or in diplomatic posts throughout the Republic. Seldom would Krevaaki be seen in an form of defense or military role, as they culturally believed in peace and discussion over violence. Because of this, Krevaaki were one of the most prevalent species in the galaxy, but were also one of the most overlooked. Residing in small hermitages, enclaves, or villages, Krevaaki were passive observers of history and tended to not get involved in the affairs of others, large or small. Throughout all of the galaxy's many wars, the Krevaaki Parliament only seceded from the Republic on a few occasions. The first occurrence was during the Jedi Civil War, when the leaders of Krevas made a tactical decision to preserve the lives of its citizens and allow for the Sith Empire to use the sector for resource management. Once Revan and Malak were defeated and the Empire crumbled, the Krevaaki enabled the Republic to reclaim lost territory quickly and restore order to the region. Over a millennia later, the Krevaaki were targeted by the Sith Empire once more and were completely and utterly conquered, nearly decimating the species and driving them to the brink of extinction. For a thousand years the Empire ruled over Krevas, leaving the world completely cutoff from the Jedi and the Republic. When the war finally ended and the Sith were driven off the world by the Army of Light, the Krevaaki slowly began rebuilding their home and their people.
By the time of the Clone Wars, the Krevaaki were disenfranchised by the lackluster support they had received in the millennium since their costly ordeal with the Sith. Seceding from the Republic and joining the Confederacy after being swayed by Count Dooku, the Krevaaki optimistically hoped for peace with the CIS. This peace did not come until after ten years of galactic civil war and the near collapse of society. Remaining with the Confederacy after the war, the species once more began to flourish.
Krevaaki Jedi[]
Force-sensitive Krevaaki have garnered the attention of organizations dedicated to the study of the Force since time immemorial. Sought out by the Tho Yor in 36,418 BrS, Krevaaki scholars eagerly boarded the ship and were whisked away to the Deep Core world of Tython where they lived for millennia as members of the Je'daii Order and as citizens of the Settled Worlds. From the ashes of the Force Wars, the conflict which saw the death of the Je'daii and the awakening of the Jedi Order, the Krevaaki continued to feel the Force and join the Order in attempts to study and learn.
Like all species which served in the Order, Krevaaki were represented in the Grand Temple on Ossus. Within the main entrance of the Temple, known as the Hall of Meditating Masters, a larger-than-life bronzium statue was erected in dedication to all Devaronians to serve alongside the likenesses of hundred of other species. The kneeling Master, Vodo-Siosk Baas, was seen as a figure of great insight and wisdom who failed to protect the Order from his own student. In the Sword of the Jedi tower, the lightsabers of all Jedi were placed in memory of fallen warriors and scholars alike. A multitude of weapons once owned by Krevaaki Jedi were housed here, even the ancient hilt fragments of Master Baas that were recovered by Master Ood Bnar
Odds of a Krevaaki child being born Force-sensitive were placed at 1 for every 10,000; an extremely high number which accounted for the large number to go on to train as Jedi early in the Order's history.
Bodo Baas | 609 BrS | 429 BrS | Archivist | Specialization | Masters | Apprentices
A descendant of the famed Jedi Master Vodo-Siosk Baas, Bodo Baas was trained by the Jedi Order on Coruscant four hundred years after the passage of the Ruusan Reformations and the demilitarization of the Jedi Order. A scholarly being, Baas was among a group of ExplorCorps Jedi who lived and served in the Adega system as archivists searching for answers among the ruins of the ancient Jedi civilization there. Working with the Academy of Jedi Archaeology, Baas processed all artifacts discovered by Jedi and non-Jedi alike as they related to the Order. During his time of study there, Baas came to possess the Tedryn Holocron, an ancient data storage device once belonging to the late Master Vodo-Siosk Baas. As caretaker of the holocron, Baas continually updated its knowledge bank with information from the modern age and reorganizing its contents to make it more accessible to future scholars. By recording his personality into the holocron, Baas became its primary gatekeeper, an interactive holographic guide to the holocron that could transmit the knowledge contained within and behaved as Baas would. When the Jedi learned of the existence of a Force sect known as the Zeison Sha on the planet Yanibar, a diplomatic envoy that included Baas was dispatched in 545 BrS, following years of planning and preparations, to that world to convince them to join forces with the Jedi. As the Zeison Sha did not approve of the Jedi tradition of separating children from their families, they would not meet with the diplomatic group until the Jedi agreed not to attempt to speak to their children, and only then with reluctance. Baas and the other observed a training session in which the Zeison Sha demonstrated their proficiency with telekinesis and their special weapon, the discblade. Baas politely debated with the Zeison Sha on whether their philosophy of self-reliance could lead to the dark side of the Force, and though they acknowledged that in some cases it had, for the most part they found self-sufficiency beneficial. Ultimately they would not relinquish their independence, and Baas and the others regretfully left Yanibar without succeeding in their mission. Shortly thereafter, the Jedi High Council sought an alliance with another Force sect, the Matukai. Upon learning that a Matukai named Mendor Typhoons had defeated a pirate gang near the world of Ord Radama, Baas and the others arranged for a meeting in orbit of Ord Radama. Baas spoke to Typhoons, who believed that his own methods of training the Force were more effective than those of the Jedi, and Baas was unable to convince him to join forces any more than the Zeison Sha. Baas recommended that the Jedi allow the Matukai to exist autonomously, as long as they did not fall to the dark side. Long after Baas' death, his holographic form would continue to preserve his knowledge within the Tedryn holocron.

A prodigy of Jedi teaching, Vodo-Siosk Baas was a martial artist with extreme control over his many tentacles. Learning to control each of them through his training, he was more flexible then most members of his species. Rising quickly through the ranks of the Jedi on Ossus, Jedi Baas served on many assignments on behalf of the High Council, serving as a shining example of the Jedi creed across the galaxy. Respected by Jedi, politicians, and civilians alike, Jedi Baas mastered the art of diplomacy and war. Behind the scenes, Baas would organize troops, advise world leaders in their times of need, and lead from the front lines on countless worlds during times of unrest. Wielding a lightsaber with ease, Baas came to train with several exotic weapons, including blasters and quarterstaffs. A veteran of over thirty planetary conflicts, Baas was elevated to the rank of Jedi Master in recognition for his service. During his time as a Master, Baas passed on what he knew while on Ossus, teaching Knights and Masters alike how to advance their lightsaber with new technology. Taking on numerous apprentices, as Baas grew more advanced in age he accepted a seat on the Jedi High Council and presided over the most serious of problems which faced the galaxy. At the behest of the Council, Baas took a contingent of Jedi apprentices to the planet Dantooine, where the Republic had launched a colonization program for the agrarian world. Establishing an prestigious academy on the Khoonda Plains, Baas excepted only the most gifted students for training in the martial aspects of the Force. One of his last apprentices, Exar Kun, was a student of the academy before setting out on his own to seek power and glory. Wary of Kun's future, Baas attempted to reach out to his former student but was too late to stop his descent into the madness of the dark side of the Force. When Kun emerged as the new Dark Lord of the Sith, Baas was awash with shame as he understood his great failure. Taking his apprentices to Coruscant to protect the seat of the Republic from Kun's assault, Baas and his Knights were able to rebuff an assault by Sith forces and keep Coruscant safe. It wasn't long, however, before Master and apprentice confronted one another in the Grand Convocation Chamber of the Senate Hall, where Baas demanded that Kun renounce the title of Dark Lord and return to Ossus peacefully. Refusing, Kun engaged his former tutor in a fierce duel. Wielding only his quarterstaff against Kun's lightsaber, Baas was taken unawares when Kun ignited a second blade from the end of his hilt and was struck down, ending the life of the famed Jedi.
Craasadi | 25,128 BrS | 24,997 BrS | Sentinel | Pathfinder | Masters | Padawans
Born aboard the Tythonian sleeper ship Ashla's Light, Craasadi was the offspring of a Je'daii not placed into suspended animation when the Order departed Tython six centuries prior to his birth. Raised amid the few Jedi that were actually awake during the voyage between the stars, Craasadi came to view the voyage as a test of will and endeavored to help end their travels and find a new homeworld. Training to be a Pathfinder, Craasadi was a common sight amid the bridge, where Jedi Masters sat in silent concentration, pushing the ships ever so slowly through the void of space. Using his spatial awareness in the Force, Craasadi became a navigator, one of the Jedi that helped guide the Masters as they avoided the deadly entanglements of gravity wells, solar winds, and other space anomalies. Craasadi was on the bridge of the Light when the sleeper ship entered the Adega system and felt the call of the planet they had been searching for. Ecstatic at the find, Craasadi waited patiently as Jedi ambassadors began to negotiate with the planet's inhabitants and agreed to allow the Jedi to land. Touching down on the planet for the first time, Craasadi and his crew mates rejoiced in touching solid ground and breathing fresh air for the first time in their lives. Leaving space forever, Craasadi took up residence in the city of Knossa where the Jedi began organizing their temples and academies. From his home, Craasadi began teaching young Jedi the ways of the Pathfinder, helping them to locate their spatial position within the Force before reaching out to other worlds and stars. When Craasadi died, he joined the Force happily and at peace.
