Knights of the Old Republic: Convict's Dawn is a fan-fiction novel written by user Jedi Master 76. It is the first work to be written —but not the first book chronologically— of the Days of Dissidence series. The work was initially written and completed in the summer of 2008, although it was removed from the internet after several months for an extensive rewrite. The full re-release of Convict's Dawn took place in the summer of 2009, one year after its original release.
The story itself takes place prior to and during the events of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, a video game produced by LucasArts in 2003. However, the majority of the novel focuses on several original characters who are only loosely affiliated with the events that happen in the game. This was done to provide the author with more artistic license, as well as show the the same era through different perspectives.
Plot summary
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, before the revenge of the Sith, the birth of the Empire, and the return of the Jedi there was a time of galactic turmoil, political unrest, and folding allegiances. The Sith Empire increased its influence throughout the galaxy while the Galactic Republic, the bastion of order and democracy, took its dying breath. The dark side grew stronger with each passing day, and the Jedi Order was forced to confront an enemy unlike any other: itself. The Knight of Alderaan, the Paladin of Eventide, and the Vindictive Guardian are the epithets of those involved in our tale. Around these three shall our story be spun, and these three shall direct the fate of those around them, for good or ill.
Enter the era of the Knights of the Old Republic. Enter the days of dissidence...
The Mandalorian Wars have ended. The Sith Empire looms on the horizon, intent on finishing what the Mandalorians began, forcing the Galactic Republic to abandon their brief respite as war engulfs the galaxy yet again. The Jedi Order, undermanned and out of time, finds itself overwhelmed against the forces under the command of the Dark Lords of the Sith. Even as the Republic and their Jedi allies flee to the Core Worlds to avoid complete annihilation, a Republic attack force engages the Sith over Polus, hoping to turn the tide of this war.
On Alderaan, the Sith have grown in power. Once a Jedi sanctuary, the artisan world has become a training ground for the Sith Order. Under the command of an enigmatic character known only as 'Preux', the Sith prepare for their most audacious and costly plan yet. Raen Benax, a Sith learner and the son of an enterprising businessman, begins a mission for his masters, not knowing that the mission will involve him in an intergalactic chess game where only the strongest will survive and the manipulative will reign. As he travels across the galaxy in search of refuge, this young convict quickly learns that the Sith are not the only ones who are seeking his destruction...
