History[]

They were initially formed c. 1000 BBY as a military police contingent of Mandalore the Uniter's army. Following Mandalore the Uniter's death and the reorganization of his forces, the Protectors remained intact and began to enforce Mandalorian law across the sector as a paramilitary organization. The Protectors' jurisdiction spread to numerous worlds including Mandalore (and its moon), Concord Dawn (and its moons), Gargon, Draboon, and Vorpa'ya. When the pacifistic New Mandalorians rose as one of the leading political groups on Mandalore, many Protectors became divided between those that wished to join the New Mandalorians and those that wished to continue independently fighting criminals and invaders. The fortified city of Keldabe, which served as Mandalore's cultural capital and main trading hub, was placed under the direction jurisdiction of a Protector office; before this point, the city was ruled by Clan Kelborn, who was defeated by the Protectors after the clan's failed revolt against Mandalore the Uniter. In the Mandalorian Excision of 738 BBY, the Journeyman Protectors faced several defeats against the Republic Judicial Forces. Around 200 BBY, the Protectors fought a small war against Aka'liit that lasted nearly a century. In 60 BBY, Jaster Mereel assumed the position of Mand'alor and thus also became Lord Protector. During Mereel's command, Takar's Law was abandoned and the Supercommando Codex was installed in Protector-held territories. Mereel's Protectors waged war against clans that remained loyal to the Neo-Crusader culture and the "pacifistic" New Mandalorians in what became known as the Mandalorian Civil War. During the civil war, a corrupt politician named Vrox became governor of one Mandalore's most influential cities, Sundari, and raised a force of traitorous Protectors with which he assumed control of the New Mandalorian government. These renegades later evolved into the Mandalorian Guard that continued to serve the Duchy. Vrox and his renegades remained active until the Great Clan Wars, during which time Vrox was captured by Republic forces and the Duchy as well as the Mandalorian Guard was placed under the command of Satine of Clan Kryze. Protectors that remained loyal to the Supercommando Codex violently opposed those that didn't, which included the Death Watch group, their allies, and the New Mandalorian government. While many Republic and New Mandalorian politicians saw the Protectors as insurgents, most Mandalorian locals in fact supported the Protectors in respect of their ancient history and their role in providing security to many settlements. Following the Great Clan Wars, what remained of the Protectors continued operating against criminals across the sector and later fought against a Republic/Imperial invasion of Mandalore space. After this point, the Protectors became divided among local militias and splinter cells that continued operating independently of one-another. Fenn Shysa, who assumed the position of Mand'alor, spearheaded the resistance effort against the Imperials and commanded his own contingent of Protectors that primarily operated in region surrounding Keldabe city. After the Imperial occupation on Mandalore was dissolved, numerous Protector cells gradually liberated the rest of the sector from Imperial holdouts in various large-scale operations and were reunified into a stable military under the Mandalorian Confederation.

Operations[]

Apart from dispatching criminals in their jurisdictions, the Protectors also carried out anti-terrorism operations and militarily defended the sector from foreign invaders.

The Protectors typically did not involve themselves in small inter-clan conflicts or political discourse unless it began affecting civilian life in the area such as during the Great Clan Wars, and focused mainly on fending off piracy, foreign military presence, terrorism, smuggling, and slavery.

Training and equipment[]

The individual Protector, like all Supercommandos, often excelled not only as a soldier but also held a feasible knowledge in piloting, medicine, law enforcement, and engineering. Without the need of specialized detachments, the Protectors were able to operate far more loosely than a conventional military while still being just as effective.

Nearly all Protectors were equipped with traditional Mandalorian armor, though some during the Imperial era were known to use sky armor as well as armor similar to those worn by the Mandalorian Guard. Duchess Satine Kryze's Protectors typically wore an elegant uniform laden with silk and jewels to distinguish them from traditionalist Protector cells. As was the case with most Mandalorian groups, Protectors had no standard-issue weaponry, though weapons made by the WESTAR company were most commonly used. Other weapons such as the EE-3 blaster carbine, E-11 blaster rifle (and the MT-11 blaster rifle, which was a replica of the E-11 made by MandalTech), and Trandoshan Accelerated Charged Particle (known by Mandalorians as "sagar" - meaning "particle/dust" - guns) weapons were increasingly popular among the Protectors in their later years.
