Istvan "Van" Fenix, known also by the nom de guerre of the Phoenix of Grakkus Arena or simply Van, was a male Human-Umbaran hybrid who—in the wake of the Galactic Civil War—served the House of Eld as the chief bodyguard and confidante to Princess Tulsi III, as well as the secret birth father of the royal twins, Jaina and Jacen. While he never learned of it himself, Van was the son of Darth Sidious.
Named Talos at birth, the child of Palpatine was delivered in secret on Wayland following an affair between the Emperor and his aide, Sly Moore, but was ultimately abandoned on Nar Shaddaa once his weak connection to the Force was discovered by his father. There, he was "adopted" by Grakkus Arena and trained to one day fight for the profit and amusement of Grakkus Jahibakti Tingi by Kreel, who gave him the name Istvan. Istvan eventually ascended from the fighting pits to become one of Grakkus's elite personal assassins, but his time with the Knives of Grakkus came to an end when a mission to hunt the royal family of Edenia ended unexpectedly in a burgeoning friendship with Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker and his own defection to the House of Eld, serving as an agent in its campaign against the Hutt's slave trade.
Istvan was personal bodyguard and enforcer for Princess Tulsi III before eventually becoming her secret paramour as well, fathering her two children—Jacen and Jaina Eld—despite the princess's marriage to Duke Ferrus. When Jacen began to manifest Force powers as a young child, it was Istvan who facilitated his move to Luke Skywalker's Jedi Temple on Ahch-To while personally training Jaina, who appeared to lack a connection to the Force, in combat and martial arts himself. Istvan was ultimately killed in 34 ABY, alongside Tulsi III, when Edenia was conquered by the Praetorium.
