Ionix Combat Systems, or Ionix Systems LTD, was a weapons company specialising in the creation of ion weapons, utilizing charged ion particles over the more common plasma used by blasters.

History[]

Ionix was founded in 100 BBY and started manufacturing small ion pistols and other cheaper ion weapons for persona defense and concealment. These weapons did well in the Outer Rim Territories where it was harder to crack down on laws governing the owning and usage of ranged weapons. Thanks to their growing popularity, they started gaining notice amongst the larger companies and organizations of the galaxy, receiving their first large weapon contract in 78 BBY.

The company started to branch out into more heavy and specialized ordinance, though they never expanded larger than just infantry portable weapons. There was some pressure on them to start making ship or vehicle mounted weapons, though they never made any sort of foray into these markets.

In around 27 BBY the company received a large contract with the predecessors to the Confederacy of Independent Systems to develop some weapons for them in secret. The company started to develop and prototype several weapons for the soon to be formed Confederacy, some of which saw release into the civilian market, though usually with either some changes or a different name.

After the end of the Clone Wars in 19 BBY, the company continued to operate with several small contracts and benefactors who wanted their specialist knowledge on ion infantry weapons. Even the Galactic Empire signed a contract with the company to produce some ion infantry weapons for them.

Weapon lines[]

Ion pistols (100 BBY - )[]

Ionix's primary, and some would argue, flagship line of weapons, Ionix became famous for their quality and affordable ion pistols. These were just as compact as blaster pistols and comparable to them in terms of capacity and power. Ionix always led their new generation of ion weapons with a pistol and its derivatives. Even after branching into other weapons, Ionix were always most proud of their pistol line, and always announced, developed and released a pistol to lead their new generation of weapons.

Ion hand cannons (100 - 73 BBY)[]

A pair of these far more powerful, but shorter range, pistols were released during the early generations of weapons, and early into Ionix's existence. The weapons were noted for their extreme power but low range and general poor handling. Whilst they were regarded as fun oddities several decades after their discontinuation, the hand cannons did not catch on and Ionix dropped the line when they started to become noticed as a premium, and specialized, manufacturer of ion weapons.

Ion machine pistols (100 BBY - 74 BBY)[]

These machine pistols were often larger, modified variants of that generation's pistol. Releasing either at the same time or just after the main pistol, the machine pistol was comparable to a small carbine in size, capable of either being used like a pistol or as a carbine, having a stock of some kind as well as usually having attachments, primarily the aforementioned stock or a forwards grip. These pistols were higher powered, higher capacity and fully automatic, filling in the role between a pistol and full carbine. However, whilst the machine pistols were successful in the early generations, their popularity and usefulness declined after the introduction of the ion carbines, which fulfilled the role of the machine pistol far better, making the line obsolete. After an attempted reboot, the machine pistol line was laid to rest in favor of the carbine line.

Ion competition pistols (82 BBY - )[]

A branch off of the main ion pistol, these special pistols were visually very similar to the main pistol of that generation but were engineered to be, often, shorter range but more accurate and non-lethal. These weapons were less powerful than the main pistol and were designed for competition shooting, where the enhanced accuracy and selection of attachable sights made them popular for competitors and casual shooters alike, as well as for those worlds where blaster ownership was heavily regulated.

Ion disruptor (78 BBY - )[]

The sniper rifle of the ion weapons, the ion disruptor was most comparable to a regular blaster sniper rifle. Long and powerful, the ion disruptor was a large rifle with a long barrel, extra power and range and came with a scope, which was sometimes detachable. Outside of special projects, the ion disruptor was the most powerful weapon Ionix offered from its inception and the power of the weapon was offset by the weapon's cost, low capacity and high power drawing. Nevertheless, various militaries and security companies enjoyed the power offered by the ion disruptor, often securing contracts for these weapons, which also doubled as good ways of shutting down droids and other electrical based things.

Ion carbine (84 BBY - )[]

The first true non-pistol design, the ion carbine was the next evolution of the ion machine pistols, a true primary weapon. These weapons were more powerful than the machine pistols and without them needed to fit into a holster, the ion carbines could have longer barrels, better ergonomics and handling than any sort of pistol. Carbine orders were amongst the first large military and private contacts that Ionix received. First releasing in the second generation of weapons, the carbines skipped a generation and jumped right back with the fourth generation, being released with each generation since then.
