Imperial Naval Special Warfare (NavSpecWar) was a special operations force of the Galactic Empire Special Operations Command. It was the successor of Galactic Republic Naval Special Warfare, formerly known as the 3rd Special Forces Group (Naval), the premier special operations force of the Galactic Republic Navy subordinated under the 1st Special Operations Brigade of the Galactic Republic Special Operations Command.
Originally one of the ten commando groups of the 1st Special Operations Brigade, the 3rd Special Forces Group would be discriminated for elite naval special operations, such as deep space assaults, boarding of hostile warships, and shipboard counter-terrorism actions. As with all clone commandos, its members would undergo primary training on Kamino, but the select troopers of the 3rd Special Forces Group would undergo secondary training and specialization at the elite Republic Naval Academy on Anaxes, the future home of the Imperial Naval Academy.
Almost immediately, the specially-trained commandos of the 3rd Special Forces Group would become hugely successful, and surprisingly, the naval commandos would integrate themselves very well with the Republic fleets, with the commandos launching key raids on Separatist space stations and warships, crippling their fleets while Republic capital ships moved in. Their success would make the commandos surprisingly popular amongst the Republic Navy, and Naval Command would formally request that the 3rd Special Forces Group be permanently attached to the Navy for naval special operations. This would be the beginning of an ongoing and fruitful collaboration between the Special Operations Command and the Republic Navy, with the 3rd Special Forces Group being formally renamed as "Naval Special Warfare" and becoming a dedicated special forces division for the Republic Navy.
