The Imperial Intergalactic Lifeboat Station was a type of orbital facility constructed and operated by the Imperial Intergalactic Lifeboat Service (IILS). These floating stations were often abbreviated to IILS and designated with the name of the system, so a station in orbit of Coruscant would have been named the IILS Coruscant, for example.

These stations were unarmed and marked to show their friendly and harmless intent, should war come to a system inhabited by a lifeboat station.

History[]

Initial constructions[]

When the lifeboat service was taking off, it was quickly realised that having lifeboats station on the surface of a planet/moon was both inefficient and slow, as it required the lifeboat to take off, exit the atmosphere (if applicable) of their location before getting to the stricken vessel as quickly as they could. This could cost the lives of spacers if the lifeboat was particularly far away. As such, plans were made to create small, self contained space stations that could have lifeboats docked to them, decreasing the response time and potentially saving more lives. These small stations soon became a staple of the service in its early years.

Station expansions[]

As the service grew in size and scope, more and more lifeboats were created and the rescue loads taken on by the service increased in demand and load. The smaller stations initially constructed and placed into orbit soon became too busy and swamped, with not enough lifeboats or personnel available, slowing down rescues. It was realised that larger stations needed to be developed and created to handle the increase in demand from the lifeboat crews. These larger orbital stations were, initially, placed in the more populated and busier systems where rescue was needed more frequently before being spread to the quieter systems.

These new stations were larger and capable of holding more crew and docking more lifeboats at them. The stations were also improved in the different rooms they carried, including sleeping quarters for off-duty personnel, a medical room for injured personnel and rescued peoples alike, as well as stronger communication arrays and systems.

Continued expansions and developments[]

As the service gained traction even more and came to the core worlds, the size of the station was just not cutting it. A redesign was needed and a circular shaped station around a central pillar was created which allowed for future expansions as they occurred. Far larger than any of the previous stations, this featured a large bridge, many docking arms for lifeboats and countless new rooms for almost all eventualities.
