No, I don't need a hyperspace compass. Buzz off.
—Han Solo
A hyperspace compass[1], also known as star compass was a piece of astrogational technology that allowed starships to navigate by orienting on specific points in hyperspace[2], usually the center of the galaxy.[3][4][5] These devices often served as backups in case of navigation computer failure[6], and could be used in both hyperspace and realspace.[3][4][5]
Description
A hyperspace compass was a palm-sized circular device. The compass could be open and shut like a locket, held in place by a clamp. At the center of the device was either a luminite or supraluminite lodestone that was attuned to specific points in hyperspace. It could also be installed into starship sensor systems. Those starship hyperspace compasses employed luminite lodestone and were attuned to center of the galaxy, while the compasses built by the Jedi employed plasma-encased supraluminite lodestone and were imbued with the Force, they required a Force-user to activate the compass, so that secrecy and safety was ensured. One such compass was attuned to a route leading to Ahch-To, where the first Jedi temple was located.[2]
Behind the scenes
In the same vein as his previous "Rammahgon-in-Legends" concept article, the author undertook this expansion of Hyperspace compass of the pre-Disney Expanded Universe canon continuity. The concept of a hyperspace compass was first mentioned by Dark Empire 3: The Battle for Calamari—the similarities between this concept and the Jedi star compass, a similar astrogation device from Disney canon continuity, ultimately inspired the creation of this article.
