The Holy Galactic Empire, also called the Holy Empire, Galactic Empire, Contispex Empire, or simply the Empire, was an absolute monarchy and the dominant government of the the galaxy for more than a century, replacing the Galactic Federation Triumvirate. It was the result of Zan Contispex, a Triumvirate military officer, seizing power in a military coup and reforming the Triumvirate into the Holy Galactic Empire. It was a officially a constitutional monarchy, but in reality it was an absolute monarchy.
Following the Second Imperial Civil War, which resulted in the dissolution of Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire, an alliance was formed between the New Jedi Order, Empire-in-exile, and the Galactic Alliance Remnant—an alliance that became the Triumvirate. The Triumvirate worked for a number of years after the end of the conflict in 138 ABY to restore order and prosperity in the galaxy. However, they failed to do so and much of the galactic populace became disillusioned with the new regime. Colonel Zan Contispex and a group of officers saw a chance to rise to power, and overthrew the Triumvirate. With Marasiah Fel and Gar Stazi (two of the three Triumvirs) both executed, Contispex established his empire. The new government quickly reestablished order and built up a large military, drafting billions of beings.
Eventually the Holy Galactic Empire restored order, and brought at least some more prosperity to much of the galactic populace. However, heavy unrest ensued, as soon many realized that it was a dictatorship under Emperor Zan Contispex. The massive military and secret police were able to quell many of the resistances, though eventually a revolution occurred.
