The HCVw A9 turbo tank, also known as the Imperial turbo tank, was a ten wheeled tank utilized by the Grand Army of the Republic late in the Clone Wars and later by the Imperial Army. It was the successor to the HAVw A6 Juggernaut.
Characteristics[]
The HCVw A9 turbo tank was part of a line of wheeled armored tanks manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards. It was designed primarily as an infantry fighting vehicle, meant to carry troops into battle and protect them once deployed. The tank was divided into two sections; a large cargo area and a command deck. The sections were connected by a reinforced flexible joint.
Its massive wheels were capable of traversing most types of terrain without difficulty and reaching speeds of up to 180 kilometers per hour, faster than the A6. The turbo tank was smaller than its predecessor, measuring 40 meters in length while the HAVw A6 Juggernaut was nearly 50 meters long.
It was relatively lightly armed, with a rapid-fire rotary laser cannon turret on the top made for anti-air use and two twin heavy repeating blasters on the front for anti-personnel use. To make up for this, it featured a hull optimized for deflecting energy bolts. Because of their light armament, HCVw A9s were rarely deployed alone, and instead usually supported larger armored formations.
History[]
The HCVw A9 was introduced in 19 BBY, towards the end of the Clone Wars. Early in the Imperial Era, an HCVw was used to transport prisoners Hera Syndulla, Gobi Glie, and Serin, who had been arrested for smuggling weapons. The turbo tank was also carrying Vice Admiral Rampart, Senator Orn Free Taa, as well as Captain Howzer. Cham Syndulla, Eleni Syndulla and members of Free Ryloth Movement attacked the convoy to rescue the trio of prisoners, although only Hera escaped and everyone else was captured.

An Imperial turbo tank on Wobani
HCVw A9s used by the Imperial Army in numerous battles prior to the Galactic Civil War such as the Mimban campaign. By 0 BBY however, the tank had become less popular in favor of AT-ATs and most were scrapped or sent to Imperial labor camps to transport prisoners. One of these tanks was used in Imperial Detention Center & Labor Camp LEG-817 on Wobani where it was transporting Jyn Erso and other prisoners. The turbo tank was ambushed by Rebel troopers of Extraction Team Bravo, who breached the tank's entrance and freed Jyn Erso from captivity.
A more advanced and armed version of the HCVw A9, the HCXw A9 turbo tank, was introduced in 0 BBY. However, the Empire rejected the design. The ten models produced were planned to be scrapped, but the Rebel Alliance acquired all ten of these during a raid.
A few HCVw A9 turbo tanks participated in the Liberation of Monix following the Battle of Endor.
