A glance at the readout told her it was Tirien. "Here, Master." "Narasi, come by my quarters when you're free." "I'm on my way." She half-expected Slejux to be there—they had been working on something together for the last few days—but he was alone. "I said 'when you're free'," he noted. "Aren't you supposed to be in lessons?" "I didn't have that much left, and I would've had to start my pebble stack from scratch anyway." He was sitting at his desk, so she sat cross-legged on the foot of his bed. "What's up? A mission for us?" She had enjoyed a couple weeks of nothing but practice and training after Darkknell—though shipboard routine had been alien the first few days—but now that she was all rested up, she was ready for another venture outside the Crescentia's safe bulkheads. "I'm not sure." Narasi scratched one of her ears. "You're not sure? What, did the Council deadlock on the vote or something?" "No. It's…well, read for yourself." He tossed her his beacon transceiver. She caught it with her off hand for practice, then plugged it into her datapad and read: SLAVERS WILL RAID LIFE POINT ON CAROSI IV ON 1:FS:2267. |

Plot Summary[]
Tirien Kal-Di and Narasi Rican have returned to the Crescentia, where they seek to extend and amplify their powers in preparation for the Seventy-Second Republic Battle Group's final engagement with Sith Lord Zirist Lakalt. When Slejux Nissatak returns from a mission to Mustafar, bearing the holocron of the Jedi Master Kwhuel, he and Tirien begin to study its contents.
Tirien receives a mysterious message warning of an impending slaver raid on Carosi IV, and Narai persuades him to intervene. With Praxeum Council Master La'altac's blessing, Tirien, Narasi, and Slejux journey to Carosi IV, where they set up a plan to defend the world against the slavers. Along the way, Narasi finds a gizka aboard the Second Chance, and wears Tirien down into allowing her to keep it as a pet; she names it Gizmo.
The day of the raid, the Zygerrian slavers land in force, and the Jedi allow themselves to be captured in order to defeat the raiders from inside and protect the captives. As they spring their trap, however, the Zygerrians are simultaneously attacked by Forceful boarders. When the dust settles and a standoff ensues, the Jedi discover Argus Z'dar, former Jedi Battlemaster, leading the boarding party. He reveals that, after leaving the Jedi Temple, he took command of Karr Shadeez's forces. He is aided by Jylo Naki, but confirms Arlya Kesk's death. He is unwilling to return to the Order, and when the Jedi decline his invitation to join his crusade, he returns them to Carosi, though he informs them he plans to execute the Zygerrian prisoners and will share intelligence with the Republic if he feels it would be useful.
Back aboard the Crescentia, news of Z'dar's defection spreads among the Jedi Guardians while Tirien and Slejux continue to work on Master Kwhuel's holocron and Tirien wonders what the future holds.
Behind the Scenes[]
Grim Tidings is the first installment in the Untitled New Sith Wars series to feature no Human characters. This was not a conscious decision; Sakaros discovered it only by doing a CTRL+F for "Human".
