The Grey Brotherhood War, or Grey War for short, was a conflict that took place in 21 ABY in the eastern Outer Rim. The participants were the Baroonda Consortium and Hutt Space on one side, against the Imperial Remnant on another side, and the New Jedi Order's secret Project 37 strike team as a third faction. The first battle was the Ambush over Kessel. There were several battles in the war, and it lasted three years, until the Treaty of Fire Mountain Rally was signed by the participants. However, the New Jedi Order never signed as its participation was entirely covert.

There were two main causes for the war: the New Jedi Order's decision that the Brotherhood of Grey Jedi were a Sith organization (which was not the case), and the Imperial Remnant's attempt to gain ground in the Outer Rim. The Empire saw the founding of the Baroonda Consortium as a perfect opportunity to gain a sector in the area, so it at first made a pact with the Consortium, selling them secondhand weapons and the like. However, this was merely a setup to try and keep Hutt assets from allying with the Consortium. This would have continued for several years, but after two years of the business, the Jedi decided that the Brotherhood of Grey Jedi, which was an integral part of Baroonda's government, was a Sith organization. They assembled a strike team whose job it was to capture, or, if necessary, kill, as many Grey Jedi as possible. However, they knew that this strike team would never get through without some kind of diversion. So they sent an agent into Imperial territory, and he convinced several Moffs that they should strike at the Consortium. Thus, a small fleet of 6 Star Destroyers and one Interdictor Cruiser was sent to the sector, leading to the Ambush over Kessel.

After a formal declaration of war, the Consortium deployed its meager fleet of Strike-class cruisers and the even older Providence-class flagship, the Grey Sword. They also had many CR90 corvettes that had been modified to carry six T-wing starfighters each. The Imperial Navy, however, had six Star Destroyers, mostly of the Victory II class. Both sides had an Interdictor Cruiser of the same class; however, the Consortium Interdictor, the Showstopper, was heavily modified, and carried twice as many turbolasers and ion cannons. The Strike-class cruisers of the Consortium fleet were also heavily modified, with small "winglets" projecting from the sides in pairs, each carrying a quad laser or small ion cannon. The Consortium Fleet was divided up like so:

  • The 1st Flotilla contained the Grey Sword, a Strike-class cruiser, two Assassin-class corvettes, and three CR90 light carriers.
  • The 2nd Flotilla contained two Strike-class cruisers, the Showstopper, and four CR90 light carriers.

However, these two groups were combined several times during the conflict. They could be further divided into groups around the main capital ships; the Grey Sword had a compliment of two Assassin-class corvettes and one CR90, the Showstopper was grouped with two CR90s, and the Strike-class cruisers were paired with one CR90 each. Later in the war they would be joined by Hutt Empire ships; two Lucrehulk-class battleships and two Munificent-class frigates, all of them of Clone Wars vintage, but updated with new guns and electronics.
