Garganese ( Garganni "Garganese"), or simply the Gargan language was the language spoken primarily by the inhabitants of Gargan's Empire. It was a creole language derived from the Galactic Basic Standard of Galactic Republic educators and the native Tyrrheneese of the Tyrrhan people, the latter being largely supplanted by Garganese as the new native tongue of the Tyrrhans.

Garganese was largely unintelligible to Galactic Basic Standard speakers, though the Garganese could understand Galactic Basic far better.

Generally speaking, the Garganese pronunciation was fairly similar to the pronunciation of Galactic Basic Standard - however it utilized some key differences in certain letters.

The Garganese rolled their "r"s; something that was seen as fairly difficult to replicate for a non-Garganese speaker. The "a", along with the "ah" and "aa" digraphs are both a long, open "a" /aː/; the latter, however, being formed more guttural (sometimes becoming /ɔː/). "O" is pronounced phonetically as a double-"o" (see above example). The "h" in the Gargan language was guttural, being pronounced like "ch".

The Gargan "ch" and "g" were a voiced velar fricative, meaning the sound was produced by constricting air flow through a narrow channel at the place of articulation, causing turbulence.

Grammar

Since Garganese had its roots in Galactic Basic Standard, it followed roughly the same grammatical pattern. However, it had some key differences originating from the Myrraneese Tyrrhan dialect from which it was developed. Primarily, it construed personal pronouns by attaching it to the verb that preceded it with an apostrophe. For example, "I work" would become "Rabozh'ir" (from "Rabozha", working and "ir", me/myself). Sometimes, the verb itself would change in a sentence depending on the consonant on which it ended. For example, "Excuse me" would be translated to "Exeto'ir". (from "Exetor", excuse). Verbs ending on the "a", "o", "e", "u", or "i" consonants would drop said letter if it was used with a pronoun in the sentence.

Garganese was a largely gender-neutral language. For example, "Prince" (Prizha) was appropriate when referring to both princes or princesses. Likewise, Mhar'ir (My lord/lady) would be equally appropriate when addressing a male or female aristocrat. Exceptions to this were nouns specific to only one gender, such as "mother" (Manmar) or "father" (Banmar). This exception did not apply when a noun could be used for both genders (Like king/queen, prince/princess).

Alphabet

The Garganese alphabet has been derived largely from a combination of Aurebesh and ancient Tyrrheneese runes. It was used as the primary writing system of the Garganese. The Red Sun Scrolls were written in the Gargan script, as were most official documents in Gargan's Empire.
