The Galactic Republic (sometimes referred to just as "The Republic") was the largest government of the multiple groups of allied systems and planets during the Republic's timespan. The Galactic Republic was formed from Old Republic around 1,019 BBY after its dissolution. Decisions revolving around the Republic would be voted on and decided by the Galactic Senate, a branch of the Republic containing senators for many planets and systems within the Republic. At its peak in 19 BBY the Galactic Senate contained over 24,000 systems and senators. The Republic would be reformed into the Galactic Empire by now Empire Palpatine in 19 BBY after Order 66 ended the Clone Wars and until its collapse in 4 ABY.
History[]
The Old Republic[]
The Clone Wars[]
The Galactic Republic was one of the two most prominent governments involved in the Clone Wars, the other being the Separatists, also known as the Confederacy of Independent Systems. After the Clone Wars began as a result of the First Battle of Geonosis, both sides would attempt to recruit as many systems as possible to gain their backing. The Republic appointed the Jedi Council to lead the clone army during the war while large decisions were still decided by the Galactic Senate and the Supreme Chancellor. The largest decisions by the Galactic Senate included commissioning new clones to be created and settle attempts aimed at ending the war, which almost all fully failed.
Future[]
The Galactic Empire[]
The rebranding of the Republic into the Empire in 19 BBY dissolved many democracy-based ethics within its government. Worlds and systems still could present Senators and Governers to the Imperial Senate, however, these ranks essentially gave the holder a dictatorship over the respective world.
