Having overcome the shadow of the Empire, the devastation of the Yuuzhan Vong, and the evil of the One Sith, the citizens of the galaxy have moved into a brilliant and shining future, under the powerful and fair Galactic Federation Triumvirate.
—Opening crawl
The Galactic Federation Triumvirate, often abbreviated to the GFT or simply referred to as the Triumvirate, was the dominant government of the galaxy following the Second Imperial Civil War. Established by the Galactic Alliance Remnant, the Empire-in-exile, and the New Jedi Order, it was created as an attempt to learn from the mistakes of previous governments and form a fair and just ruling body, and thus was represented in by all of the current factions in the government, with the three ruling Triumvirs being the Emperor, the Supreme Commander, and a selected Jedi Master (later replaced by the Grand Master) of the Order. They presided over the majority of executive decisions, though a great amount of authority still remained in the hands of individual planets and their chosen governments. However, they did not have absolute power.
The new government faced its greatest threat in over 1000 years after the defeat of the One Sith, in the form of Raixan Fauth, a powerful dark side warlord who was intent on conquering the galaxy via his fleet. In a combination of brilliant tactics and powerful soldiers, Fauth and his forces nearly managed to destroy both the Triumvirate and the New Jedi Order, until the Battle of Hideaway provided hope that his threat could be defeated.
However, Triumvirate forces could still not stand up to Fauth's own, and the loss of their Jedi defenders during the Second Great Jedi Purge hurt them greatly. Despite a brave resistance, they were ultimately defeated during the Fall of Coruscant, with their government disintegrating as remaining forces under their control united under the banner of the Triumvirate Subversive Intelligence Service, better known as the 'Underground'.
