Gaebrean Kaivalt was a male member of House Kaivalt, a family of House Pelagia, and a Jedi Knight of the Tapani sector. He was the youngest child of Sir Vinton Kaivalt and Dame Cyndobel Kaivalt, following his elder sisters Kaelora and Cesylee, and the great-grandson of Jedi Master Donarius Kaivalt.
Biography[]
Though strong in the Force and a competent swordsman in adulthood, Gaebrean always preferred the frenzy and richness of busy city life to the quiet atmosphere of his family's ancestral home, Inimă Eserzennae. Nonetheless, he cherished his close relationships with his twin cousins Raina and Raven and was fond of their droid Bernius. He even preferred his uncle Miklato, Vinton's brother, to his own father; both were serious Jedi Knights, but Miklato had a longer fuse and a less acerbic temper than Vinton.
Gaebrean was Knighted by High Lord Chiron Brascel, but many Pelagia nobles (including, to some degree, his own father) considered him a dissolute wastrel. He was a decent sabacc player and a coinnosseur of wines and liquors, but he lost more money than he made gambling, and his father was displeased with the company he kept, both nobles and commoners alike. Gaebrean was also a serial womanizer, charming and leaving woman after woman throughout the Tapani sector; his parents despaired of ever arranging a favorable or even bearable match for him.
After the Battle of Eriadu in 1,385 BBY, a group of Republic Jedi arrived on Pelagon, where Baron Kaivalt offered them sanctuary at Inimă Eserzennae. When the Jedi and Raven began plotting to assassinate Sith Overlord Vedya Gasald, Miklato agreed to get them a meeting with Lord Brascel, but contacted his brother early in hopes of getting the family united in one view. That failed at once; Vinton and Kaelora refused, while Gaebrean joined without hesitation and Cesylee was ambivalent. Lord Brascel blessed the mission and planned to go himself, but merely allowed other Pelagian Jedi to go without commanding it. Gaebrean and Vinton argued in the wake of Lord Brascel's decision, but neither moved the other to reconsider.
Gaebrean and former Sith apprentice Zaella Sabir, a ward of Tirien Kal-Di, slept together early in the mission planning, though who seduced whom was not clear to any onlookers. Gaebrean and Kaelora argued (and Kaelora and Tirien nearly came to blows) when Kaelora called Zaella the "latest of [Gaebrean's] tawdry whores", and a former Sith's involvement in the mission caused Cesylee to decide against it too. Zaella lashed out at Gaebrean and Tirien criticized him coldly, giving Gaebrean some disquiet about how much he had used her, even if the arrangement was mutual.
As the weeks went on, Gaebrean took to training with vigor while also trying to mend fences with Zaella. He secured false transponder codes for the Second Chance through one of his less-than-reputable contacts, and synthskin to help Tirien hide his distinctive family tattoos from a former lover with whom he remained on good terms. Gaebrean and Zaella were on-and-off lovers throughout the weeks of preparation, though he remained, with Tirien and Narasi Rican, one of Zaella's most ardent supporters. He kept in touch with his mother and Cesylee, though he had little to say to Kaelora and even less to his father.
When the strike team received the critical intelligence it needed, Gaebrean declined to contact his family, though Miklato notified his brother. Gaebrean, like most of the Tapani nobles, remained aboard the Second Chance on the Allanteen Six shipyards, but when the group reached the Kiss of Death, he was among those who confronted Gasald in her throne room. Using her gift for manipulation and the information she had garnered about each of them, Gasald undermined Gaebrean's confidence by reminding him of the many women he had romanced and abandoned, and speculated on how many he had impregnated who had subsequently aborted their children rather than try to raise illegitimate, Forceful babies without help. Gaebrean was nauseated by the realization, and further wounded when Gasald revealed that Lord Lezascan Wisté and Sir Kobold Baliss had sold them out to protect the Tapani sector.
A melee ensued, in which Gaebrean dueled Kobold despite Kobold's superior fencing skills. After they were separated, Gaebrean went to Zaella's rescue; Gasald had turned Narasi on her by exacerbating and warping Narasi's jealousy of Zaella's growing bond with Tirien. Gaebrean resumed his duel with Kobold rather than allow the two women to face him, but though he wound Kobold up with accusations of treason, he ultimately became distracted himself, and Kobold killed him with a lunge through the chest.
Raven killed Kobold moment's later, and carried Gaebrean's body back to the Second Chance rather than deprive his aunt, uncle, and cousins of closure. The Kaivalts gave Gaebrean a Jedi funeral at Inimă Eserzennae, which Zaella, Jirdo Yushari, Renata Cul'Caritas, and Bernius were also allowed to attend.
Powers and Abilities[]
Gaebrean, like all Tapani Jedi, was trained in Makashi, though his cousin Raven (a substantially more skillful Jedi) considered him merely "competent". He incorporated one-handed slashes into his style.
Appearance and Personality[]
Gaebrean wore his light brown hair at collar length. He enjoyed elaborate dress even by Tapani standards, such as a cavalier hat and an earring in his left ear, and wore a moustache and pointed goatee. He carried a lightsaber with a purple blade, whose golden, bell-guarded hilt was inlaid with cortosis, making it resistant to lightsaber blades.
Gaebrean enjoyed the pleasures of life, and gave little thought to them once he was done with them, although he only engaged in sexual dalliances with adult, consenting partners. Vedya Gasald was able to manipulate this thoughtlessness, causing him to consider the feelings of his partners after his departure for the first time.
