This article is about the light freighter. You may be looking for other things called "Second Chance".

The Second Chance, previously designated GX-521-A3, was a Sunbeam 990-class light freighter manufactured during the New Sith Wars. It was best known as the personal ship of the Jedi Knight Tirien Kal-Di and his Padawan Narasi Rican.

History[]

The Taanab Campaign[]

GX-521-A3 was manufactured by Rendili StarDrive in 1,425 BBY and, until 1,389 BBY, was owned by Taanab Senator Glavial Iltek. That year, after Jedi Knight Tirien Kal-Di and his Padawan, Narasi Rican, saved Iltek from an assassination attempt by Alecto, the senator gave them the ship in thanks. Because Jedi were not allowed possessions beyond the necessities, Tirien contacted the Jedi High Council; after deliberation, the Council Masters elected to leave the ship with Tirien and Narasi, assuming they could put it to good use.

Tirien took the ship with good grace, though he identified a number of systems in need of upgrade. Narasi, though excited by the gift, was exasperated by her master calling it by alphanumerical designation and insisted repeatedly that it needed a name. After the Battle of Taanab, to commemorate the new beginning of their relationship, Narasi convinced Tirien to rename the ship the Second Chance.

Tirien began teaching Narasi to pilot the Second Chance after Taanab. By 1,388 BBY she was able to fly it in a basic way unaided. While the two Jedi were assigned to the Crescentia Narasi spent considerable time on flight simulators to improve her skills. The two also worked to upgrade the ship over time, and Tirien usually taught Narasi how each new system worked.

In 1,387 BBY, Tirien allowed Mali Darakhan to use the Second Chance for a mission to Milagro that included Aldayr Nikodon, Sil Kadych, Slejux Nissatak, and Tirien and Narasi themselves. The Second Chance was damaged running Vedya Gasald's blockade of Milagro, and sustained further damage fleeing the planet weeks later, but managed to escape to Corellia for repairs.

When Tirien was briefly deprived of his Force powers after the Assassination on Anaxes, Narasi became Slejux's Padawan and Tirien gave them the Second Chance. Narasi herself stole the Second Chance some weeks later along with Aldayr, chasing a false rumor of Darth Alecto to Skorrupon. The two Padawans were captured, but Mali and Slejux arrived in time to capture the mercenaries responsible and recover the ship. Mali had local contractors add a gunning station, then he and Slejux chased Tirien's beacon transceiver across the galaxy to Vjun, where they rescued Tirien, Narasi, Aldayr, and a number of slaves from the Palace of Happiness; Tirien and Narasi were both indignant about the addition of the guns without consulting them.

Narasi and Tirien took the Second Chance on their months-long Mission to Darkknell, where it acquired a pair of tribal symbols painted on its wing, as well as an infestation of gizka. The two Jedi successfully purged most of the gizka from the ship, though Narasi persuaded Tirien to begrudgingly allow her to keep Gizmo, the last gizka aboard.

After their mission to Circumtore, Tirien and Narasi discovered the Second Chance's cargo hold was large enough to accommodate a nuclear bomb. On Guudria, Narasi replaced the Second Chance's outdated sensor display system with a more updated projector. The Jedi used the Second Chance to reach the Kiss of Death during the Mission to Allanteen after Gaebrean Kaivalt had it outfitted with multiple transponder codes. After Yan Razam stole an Imperial starfighter and opened fire on the Kiss of Death's hangar bay, a falling girder crushed the Second Chance's sensor dish. Baron Miklato Kaivalt paid for a new, more complex sensor dome to replace it.

The Northern Campaign[]

Tirien, Narasi, Zaella Sabir, and Jirdo Yushari took the Second Chance to Tython, where they remained for half a year. Narasi and Zaella, along with Gizmo, took the ship on a Great Journey around the planet. When Tirien ended his Barash vow, the crew dropped Jirdo at Borleias and Zaella on the Valor, then joined Mali Darakhan's Eighth Republic Expeditionary Fleet.

In the Eighth Fleet, Tirien often took the Second Chance on diplomatic missions around the northern Outer Rim and Mid Rim. After Narasi began training as a Republic Marine officer and often needed to leave the Coronet's Jewel too, she and Tirien generally operated on the principle that whoever got to the ship first in the morning could use it for the day. The Jewel's hangar bay crew, on Mali's direction, allowed Narasi to keep Gizmo so long as he remained aboard the Second Chance.

With the reluctant consent of Republic Intelligence, N'tulk-ala'ak-'sk'l'uud and his Xi Charrian technicians customized the Second Chance with both a signal jammer and sensor masking technology sufficient to block other ships' sensors from detecting a nuclear bomb in the cargo hold. After the mission to the Redeemer, Republic Intelligence insisted on removing the latter, but allowed the ship to keep the signal jammer.

Design[]

A compact freighter, GX-521-A3 had a relatively spare interior. Apart from the cockpit, it had a small interior hold (just large enough for lightsaber combat practice), a food prep area, a refresher, and a pair of cramped bunks. Tirien and Narasi were forced to share the living space; when they added Zaella Sabir and Jirdo Yushari to their traveling crew, Tirien and Jirdo slept on the deck. After 1,386 BBY, the Second Chance had a double gun mounted on the top.

The engineering section took up the aft of the ship. In addition to maintenance systems for the engines, the mechanical section had a dorsal hull access hatch which could connect to a docking tube and a trapdoor which allowed interior access to the cargo hold.

When Tirien permitted Gizmo to remain aboard, Narasi converted an unused cabinet into a nest for him. Another cabinet in the hold concealed a secret compartment in which the Jedi kept the holocrons of Jedi Masters Giffis Fane and Kwhuel. A concealed panel on a bulkhead hid a spare weapons cabinet, wherein Tirien stored Suwo Tolp's lightsaber and a variety of other spare weapons.
