A fortress world was a heavily-protected planet that usually served as a military or political stronghold. Fortress worlds were primarily used by the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Empire.

History[]

During the Clone Wars, the Confederacy of Independent Systems used numerous fortress worlds during the Outer Rim Sieges. These planets had armies of battle droids, self-replicating droid and vehicle factories, and large fleets defending them. Separatist fortress worlds such as Bastion and Quadan VI were the sites of prolonged sieges that resulted in high casualties. The Galactic Republic also had well-defended planets in the Core Worlds such as Anaxes, although the Outer Rim Sieges forced Republic warships to go to the front lines, making Republic fortress worlds more prone to attacks.

The Galactic Empire later used fortress worlds with sizeable fleets and thousands of stormtroopers. Successful Rebel Alliance assaults on these planets were extremely difficult. Following the Battle of Endor, several Imperial remnants entrenched themselves on Imperial fortress worlds. The New Republic employed MG-100 StarFortress SF-17 bombers and Free Virgillia-class Bunkerbusters to swiftly neutralize these holdouts.
