In 157 ABY, the Centurions Eskol Kaartinen and Te`net Organi dueled one another aboard the Unseen Queen, the flagship of the Imperium, the ascendant Killik Nest of Nests.
The two Centurions, along with their comrade Chindal, had successfully led the Imperium to victory over the Vagaari hives in the Second Swarm War. However, Kaartinen and Chindal had both become Joiners, their minds and personalities merging with those of the Killiks they led, as well as the Massassi. The resulting confusion of fact, fiction, religious belief, and sense of duty led Kaartinen to declare that the Imperium would conquer the known galaxy on behalf of the Golden Empire. Organi, who was unaffected by Killik pheromones, opposed the idea, insisting that they had already exceeded their mandate and should not proceed without the approval of the Empire's Queen, Rin Sakaros.
The pair had argued over the idea previously, but with the war concluded, there was now nothing to divert Kaartinen from his plan. Polarized, the two brothers finally came to blows in the hangar of the half-completed flagship. They were well-matched; Kaartinen was a master of Soresu and a slightly better swordsman due to his superior physical strength, while Organi was stronger in the Force and had abundant space for his Ataru acrobatics.
In the end, however, Organi hesitated; he and Kaartinen had been brothers and good friends for over sixty years. Fully Joined into the Imperium, Kaartinen did not hesitate, and he finally caught Organi on an overextension and cut off both the Qua's hands at the wrists.
Though he had the defeated Qua at his mercy, Kaartinen did not kill him. His Killik subordinates, who had absorbed memories from both Kaartinen and Chindal, reminded him that only the Sovereign or the Prefect of the Order of Keltrayu could order a Centurion's death. Kaartinen had Te`net incarcerated aboard the Unseen Queen instead, intending to bring his erstwhile friend along for the conquest and prove how correct the Imperium was in its vision.
