Wow. Just when you thought they ran out of ideas, THIS happens.
—Clone trooper[src]

The B2 chainsaw super battle droid, more commonly known as chainsaw droids, were a modification of the basic Confederate super battle droids used by the Trade Federation and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. Chainsaw droids were created specially by Baktoid Combat Automata, the main droid manufacturer of the Confederacy, for use in cutting through some substances more efficiently than with a laser. Thus, they were equipped with two chainsaws that could also be used to attack enemies.

Snow droids won and lost many battles during the Clone Wars, notably the Battle of Geonosis and the Battle of Simocadia. After use on Geonosis, Baktoid began not only creating many of the chainsaw droids, but another variant, the B2 buzzsaw super battle droid, which was equipped with a similar weapon, the buzzsaw.

History[]

Geonosis[]

Since the chainsaw droids were not needed in large numbers, only a few thousand were produced, and they were evenly placed throughout the Separatist Droid Army. The first chainsaw droids were produced in the droid foundries of Geonosis, and were thus stationed in the Geonosian segment of the Separatist Droid Army.

When two Jedi and a senator arrived on Geonosis to investigate the Separatist leaders, they were sentenced to execution in an arena full of beasts from across the Galaxy. The execution failed as the Jedi and senator escaped from their chains and survived the beasts while more Jedi came to rescue them. Separatist leaders Dooku and Nute Gunray called for all available droids to be sent into battle. Among the countless B1 battle droids, Droidekas, and B2 super battle droids, chainsaw droids and other experimental variants were lost in the army. Though many managed to defeat Jedi, they were not any more successful than their standard counterparts in accuracy. The droid army eventually pushed the few remaining Jedi into a tight circle in the middle of the arena. As they prepared to obliterate these last few, Jedi Master Yoda arrived with the newly-created Grand Army of the Republic. The droids immediately switched their primary targets from the Jedi to the gunships and clone troopers that were now overpowering them.

The battle reached its climax as the Republic fully engaged the Separatist military. Chainsaw droids, along with the other droids, were thrown into heavy combat. Many were able to slice clone troopers with their chainsaws.

Behind the scenes[]

Chainsaw droids are based on the canon chainsaw droids; the canon chainsaw droids only appear in one Clone Wars comic, Star Wars The Clone Wars Volume 4: The Colossus of Destiny, and the chainsaw droids are not given a background. The author of this article, Darthtyler, had created many articles on obscure droids in the past, notably the SB-3 frigid super battle droid and the Flame battle droid. He decided to use this chainsaw droid as a basis for his next article.
