Old Republic era

Aldayr Nikodon was a male Human Jedi Padawan who lived during the New Sith Wars. He was the Padawan of Mali Darakhan and a friend of Narasi Rican. As the apprentice of a Jedi General, Aldayr saw frequent combat during the Wars, often against the forces of Valin Aresh. During a period of Modality captivity, however, he was corrupted and turned to the dark side by Aresh himself, becoming the Dark Lord's new Sith apprentice. Though Aldayr attempted to help Aresh defeat the Republic and New Sith Empire and bring lasting peace and order to the galaxy, the Modality's endgame was disrupted by the Jedi, and Aldayr's erstwhile lover Narasi killed him in a duel.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Born on Corellia to a Corellian mother and an offworld father, Aldayr joined the Jedi Order as an infant, and was sorted into Dragon Clan. At the age of twelve, fellow Corellian Mali Darakhan selected Aldayr as his Padawan. The two traveled the galaxy battling the Sith; among their adventures were a trip to Hutt Space, rooting out saboteurs on Alderaan, and battles at Yag'Dhul and Ord Mantell. Aldayr had a very high opinion of his master, considering him the greatest Jedi in the Order.

Tanaab[]

In 1,389 BBY, Mali and Aldayr joined the Battle of Taanab as the Jedi High Council became increasingly desperate to stop Darth Saleej from conquering the planet. There Aldayr served alongside Narasi Rican, a Zygerrian who was Padawan to Tirien Kal-Di. Aldayr was distrustful of a Zygerrian at first; this attitude faded in a few days, but was replaced by annoyance as Narasi seemed to compete with him for Mali's attention rather than sticking with her own master. Mali and Aldayr brought down a Sithspawn created by Kai Latra during the battle.

On the final day of battle, Mali, Aldayr, Tirien, and Narasi wound up with a Republic Army battalion, facing the Sith. As the battalion pursued, Tirien and Mali went to confront Darth Vandak and Darth Alecto, leaving Aldayr and Narasi to hold a key chokepoint. There they were confronted by Sith Lords Nerlus Zedum and Ondar Vargh, and Sith Acolyte Churka. Aldayr dueled Vargh while Narasi fought Churka; Aldayr briefly kept the Hrakian Sith at bay, but was ultimately defeated when Ondar cut off his sword arm between his elbow and shoulder. Narasi was disarmed by Churka, but both were saved by the intervention of Tirien and Elata Cazars.

In the aftermath of the battle, Aldayr took his injury in good stride, and Mali kept him in good spirits, assuring him that he had passed one-fifth of the Jedi Trials despite being only fifteen.

A Rough Time[]

Aldayr received a cybernetic arm and grew used to it over time, but the shock of losing his real arm deeply affected him. He grew more reserved, laughed less, and took to training with greater intensity. He also began using a double-bladed lightsaber, having been favorably impressed by its capabilities when Ondar Vargh used one.

In 1,387 BBY, Mali took them both to the Crescentia, where they were reunited with Tirien and Narasi. Aldayr kept a level demeanor with Narasi despite her lingering dislike of him, but was struck to the core when she accused him of having "no personality". He began questioning how much of himself he had lost, but had little time to process it before Mali confided that he planned to go to the aid of Milagro, a world recently invaded by the Sith, despite the council's refusal to bless the mission. Aldayr agreed to go with his master, but when Tirien, Narasi, Slejux Nissatak, and Master Sil Kadych joined the team, Aldayr felt deeply betrayed when Kadych casually mentioned that Mali had been keeping something regarding the Corellian Jedi from Aldayr.

On Milagro, Aldayr continued to follow Mali's directives, but their relationship was strained. When Narasi volunteered to go with him to hunt down Anzat assassins rather than them being attached to their masters, Aldayr quickly agreed. He and Narasi argued while on the hunt, but put the quarrel aside to confront one of the Anzati. The two Padawans together managed to mortally wound the Anzat, and Aldayr finished him off with a sai cha.

The Jedi eventually mounted an attack on Milagro's government center to kill Darths Vaszas and Vandak. Aldayr accompanied Mali and Kadych, and dueled the Togorian Darth Kra'all with Mali while Kadych killed Vaszas and defeated Darth Hokhtan. When Vandak stabbed Kadych in the back, Mali challenged the Anzat and sent Aldayr to get Tirien for help; Aldayr had to fight his way past two of Vandak's Anzat killers, though he was wounded in doing so.

Tirien came to Mali's aid, but sent Aldayr and Narasi to clear their exit path, knowing they were no match for Vandak. The Padawans discovered that the Milagro Resistance had left them to die, but resolved to go down fighting. However, Slejux came to their aid, escorting a group of hostages, and the Jedi were ultimately rescued by Nal and Kadelle Chun aboard the Rogue's Gambit. The Chuns took the Jedi to the Second Chance, and Narasi was able to retrieve their masters, run the blockade, and escape to Corellia.

After treatment in a bacta tank, Aldayr convalesced aboard a Corellian destroyer. Mali explained that Master Tyson Dumiel had called a conclave of Corellian Jedi, proposing they leave the Jedi Order to defend the Corellian sector, and apologized for keeping Aldayr in the dark. Aldayr was still annoyed at what he perceived as coddling, but eventually confided some of his concerns about what Narasi had said and what kind of man he was.

Friends and Foes[]

Mali and Aldayr returned to the fight against Aresh, and Aldayr frequently sought opportunities to duel the Dark Vanguard and test his skills. He also made connections with the Army, Navy, and Republic Intelligence, following Mali's model of cultivating relationships. At the same time, Aldayr and Narasi began an occasional correspondence, sharing their experiences, triumphs, and frustrations with their masters. When Supreme Chancellor Phnyong was assassinated and Mali received word that Tirien had lost his connection to the Force, Aldayr embraced Mali's plan to return to Coruscant and help—not just for the chance to fight Darth Alecto, who had poisoned Tirien, but also to help Narasi, whom Aldayr suspected would need some help.

He found Narasi upset and feeling impotent, and the two spoke daily after Aldayr's return, strategizing how best to help. Aldayr was annoyed that Mali had allowed himself to become embroiled in Corellia's attempt to get Master Nawsa Arodion elected to the Chancellorship, believing they belonged in the field, not the Senate Hall. Aldayr leaned on one of his Intelligence contacts for help and was rewarded with a fragmentary report that Darth Alecto had been spotted on Skorrupon. When Narasi informed him that Slejux Nissatak, her acting master, had confined them to the Temple, Aldayr told her about Skorrupon, and the two agreed to go after Alecto.

They stole the Second Chance and made it to Skorrupon, but walked into a Sith trap. Narasi was captured, and Aldayr had to beat up a room of mercenaries and nearly amputate one's arm to find her path. He dueled and killed a Sith holding her, but was overwhelmed by other Sith and mercenaries, and stunned into submission.

The Madness of Kai Latra[]

Narasi and Aldayr were imprisoned in the Palace of Happiness, Kai Latra's fortress on Vjun, and the Sith affixed a restraining bolt to Aldayr's cybernetic arm so he could not employ its superhuman strength. Aldayr was interrogated by Xargo Dejuth and Sanno Casa, but refused to talk. When it came time for Narasi's interrogation, she overpowered her captors and sprang Aldayr, and they "escaped" into the castle. The two skirted death on numerous occasions, as the castle was filled with Kai Latra's Sithspawn mutations and monsters. The Padawans also had to deal with their own awkwardness; they had been stripped naked to make escape less convenient, and Aldayr found himself disconcertingly aware of Narasi.

Eventually the two were ambushed by Olik Gryfe, a former AgriCorps Jedi who had been twisted and mutated by Kai Latra into a servant of the dark side. They narrowly escaped, finding their way to Kai Latra's prison. They agreed to spring the slaves and prisoners, and when Narasi strangled a Zygerrian dropping off a new shipment of slaves, Aldayr donned the disguise and took his shock whip. Xargo discovered him, but Narasi sparked a fight between the Zygerrians and the Sith, and Aldayr escaped long enough to access the maintenance room used by Kai Latra's Ugnaught servants and get the restraining bolt off his arm. Returned to the fight, he helped Narasi get the slaves onto the Zygerrian transport; to Aldayr's shock, Narasi produced Tirien, who had come to the Palace independently, and all three were saved by Mali and Slejux, who had arrived in the Second Chance tracking Tirien's beacon transceiver.

Back on Coruscant, Mali and Aldayr argued about Aldayr's interrogation of the mercenary on Skorrupon, and returned to the northern campaign vexed with one another. Before they left, however, Aldayr kissed Narasi.

Warnings[]

Aldayr and Narasi continued to correspond over the following weeks, discussing the exact nature of their relationship; Aldayr was not averse to the idea of something beyond friendship, though he felt it best to keep it from Mali and Tirien. Narasi warned him of a vision she had had—Aldayr fighting a skeleton trying to put a poison crown on his head while a snake snapped at his heels—but while Aldayr dutifully passed it on to Mali, he had no idea what to make of it.

Aldayr fought in the campaign against Valin Aresh, sometimes flying a Jedi starfighter during battles. He helped Mali liberate some of Aresh's concentration and execution camps for non-Humans, witnessing their brutality firsthand and developing a desire to take the fight to the Dark Vanguard.

Milagro[]

In mid-1,386 BBY, Vedya Gasald conquered Allanteen Six and seized its shipyards, and Mali assembled a fleet to liberate Milagro. Aldayr accompanied his master to Corellia to persuade Diktat Neran Daikros to support the mission, and it was Aldayr who happened upon the idea of recruiting Raven Kaivalt and having him bring in the Tapani sector fleet. As the fleet came together, Aldayr served as Mali's adjutant; Mali wanted him to get exposure to command-level issues and concerns.

Aldayr was at Mali's side for the invasion of Milagro, including fighting through the Milagro Government Center, where he held off pursuing Sith forces long enough for Mali to duel and kill Halicon Karzded. In the ensuing "peace", Aldayr aided his master in courting leaders of the Milagro Resistance and supervised security for their first town hall meeting. As Mali worked to keep the peace, Aldayr often handled issues behind the scenes, fighting with the Republic bureaucracy and organizing security details. He participated in a raid on a criminal hangout that resulted in the arrest of Nal and Kadelle Chun, though he took them to Mali when he recognized them.

When Kysl Ssron escaped confinement, Aldayr tracked him down and dueled him until Mali arrived and the Sith Lord surrendered. Aldayr joined the Milagroans in counseling Mali to order Ssron's execution; he offered to carry out the execution himself, though Mali ultimately beheaded Ssron.

MIA[]

After Kenza Rowkwani killed Eviar Seldec, Elata Cazars ordered some of Mali's forces back to the northern campaign. Mali sent a hundred ships, as well as Aldayr; he felt Aldayr was ready for a battle command and could do more good in the north than at Milagro. Before his departure, Aldayr discussed his feelings for Narasi with Mali, who was supportive but encouraged his Padawan to focus on earning his Knighthood first.

Returned to the north front, Aldayr served aboard the Guardian, fighting in several engagements and earning his second-class Corellian Bloodstripe for gallantry. At the Battle of Garqi, Aresh's war fleet ambushed the Republic battle group of which Aldayr was part. The battle was a rout for the Republic, and the Guardian went down with all hands; Elata called Mali to report Aldayr missing in action.

The Fall of the Guardian[]

The Guardian crashed on Garqi, killing most of the personnel aboard. Aldayr led the few survivors in a retreat, but they were quickly engaged by the Dark Vanguard; Aldayr killed Fourth Onith, but was ultimately overcome and captured by First Isk. First Isk sent him to Ciutric IV, where he was detained by First Aurek. He briefly developed a friendship with a slave he nicknamed "Brown Eyes", which led to a sexual relationship, but when he attempted to escape, Brown Eyes, terrified for both their survival, reported his escape attempt and he was recaptured. First Aurek had her executed, which finally provoked Aldayr into the dark side; he killed four Purifiers and nearly dueled First Aurek before Valin Aresh personally subdued him.

Confronted by Aresh, Aldayr resisted the opportunity to cut him down in cold blood, and instead the two engaged in a philosophical debate. Over the following months, Aresh slowly brought Aldayr around to some of his viewpoints; Aldayr was aware of what Aresh wanted, but hoped to undermine the Modality (and, by extension, the dark side) from within. When he discovered that the Vanguardians were clones and was at risk of execution, he opted to save himself by feigning becoming Aresh's apprentice, and began learning the dark side and Sith teachings too. Eventually, Aldayr came to believe neither Mali nor the Republic would ever do what was needed to kill Aresh, and intentionally destroyed ten Vanguardian clones still in their cloning tanks (then killed Third Shen in a duel shortly after). The murder plunged him into the dark side wholeheartedly, and he became Aresh's apprentice in truth.

He spent the following months learning the dark side more earnestly, but in the wake of Operation Liberator, Aresh sought to undermine Mali's advance. He arranged the Second Battle of Agamar and Aldayr's "escape" from the Purity to the Republic fleet, where Aldayr was welcomed back.

Last Clear Chance[]

The Republic conditionally cleared Aldayr for duty, with both Republic Intelligence and Tirien Kal-Di urging he be eased in without an immediate return to military command. Mali encouraged Aldayr, but Aldayr was closest with Narasi, who was overjoyed by his return and clearly open to a relationship with him. Their rapidly growing closeness caused Aldayr's resolve to waver, and he suffered a crisis of conscience between his commitment to Aresh's view of the greater good and his incompatible affection for Narasi.

In the end, understanding the Jedi would subject him to more exacting examination which might reveal his dark side training, Aldayr decided to return to the Modality. However, the night before his escape, he slept with Narasi, which he found liberating, but she was crushed by his desertion.

What Must Be Done[]

Rejoining Aresh, Aldayr joined him at his secret project: resurrecting a Pius Dea cathedral ship, the Redeemer, which still possessed the BoSS navicomputer virus which had disabled the Pius Dea fleet at the Battle of Uquine. Aresh believed that, if he could successfully reassemble the virus, he could infect and disable the fleets of both the Republic and the New Sith Empire, all but summarily destroying both hegemons and allowing the Modality to conquer the galaxy.

Restless at effectively being confined to the Redeemer, Aldayr tried to hone his dark side powers, but felt he needed a real outlet to master them. After Elata Cazars died fighting Aresh so Zaella Sabir could escape, Aldayr did not take it on faith that Zaella was dead, and wondered if Mali would arrive to try to stop Aresh. When the Jedi did arrive, Aldayr and Second Esk confronted Zaella, Kenza Rowkwani, and Narasi. Narasi tried to persuade Aldayr back to the light side, but Aldayr, believing he was irrevocably committed to his course, fought her instead.

The two dueled through the Redeemer's hangar bay, Narasi still trying to redeem Aldayr, but his intransigence finally convinced her that he would not be saved. Using a Jedi trick, she briefly disabled the electronics in his cybernetic arm, and when his lightsaber slipped the grip of his replacement hand, she struck him from chin to scalp, then kicked him over a railing to his death.

Legacy[]

Aldayr's death was devastating for both Mali and Narasi. The Jedi Order officially suppressed any word of Aldayr's fall to the dark side, publicizing only that he had been killed in action in the campaign against the Modality.

Powers and Abilities[]

Trained to be a Jedi by Mali Darakhan, Aldayr was skillful enough that at age fifteen he could survive on a violent battlefield for days on end. At the same age he possessed sufficient ability with a lightsaber to briefly hold his own against a Sith Lord before being overwhelmed; by seventeen he successfully dueled and killed a dark side adept and fought multiple Anzat members of the Brotherhood of Shadows, and separately killed three members of the Dark Vanguard (including one Third Rank). Aldayr used a Form V heavily focused on strength, particularly once he could incorporate his cybernetic arm into battle. He preferred to fight with a double-bladed lightsaber, but was a proficient swordsman with a single blade as well.

Serving beside Mali, Aldayr acquired experience with combat command, and was entrusted with his own command at eighteen. He also developed an elementary command of the dark side of the Force under Valin Aresh's tutelage, but it was still unrealized by the time of his death. He could fly a Jedi starfighter with skill enough to survive multiple engagements and dogfights.

Appearance and Personality[]

Aldayr had black hair, dark blue eyes, and fair skin. After his defeat by Ondar Vargh, he obtained a cybernetic replacement for most of his right arm; as he matured he developed a broad, muscular build. After his injury he carried a double-bladed lightsaber, and usually wore a bulky glove over his right hand and forearm. During his captivity on Ciutric IV, his hair was cropped shorter and he grew a beard; he continued to wear both styles for the remainder of his life.

Aldayr was proud to be a Jedi and prouder still to be Mali Darakhan's apprentice. He was brave in battle, and willing to stand his ground against impossible odds. On Taanab he resented Narasi acting like a learner with his master, believing Mali's guidance should be for him alone, and their relationship was still testy two years later. Losing his arm was a deep shock to Aldayr, who became much more intense, less humorous, and overall more reserved. He gradually developed a strong friendship with Narasi, and was willing to seriously injure a Sith mercenary who had hurt her in an effort to rescue her. He eventually considered a romantic relationship with Narasi.

Aldayr's determination to destroy his enemies, protectiveness over others, and willingness to engage in morally questionable actions ultimately contributed to his fall to the dark side. After falling to the dark side, he accepted the need to do whatever was necessary to bring about lasting order, believing only order could itself bring peace. His affection for Narasi persisted into his Sith apprenticeship, and caused him to briefly waver in his commitment to the dark side, but he was ultimately willing to kill even Narasi if it was needed for the final victory.
