Feldnar crystals were a type of gemstone that was most often found amongst naturally-occurring hfredium deposits. Its crystalline structure was based on a high-pressure bonding of carbon and hfredium, which resulted in a distinctive and striking blue-green hue; when properly cut and faceted, feldnar gems would alternate between a value similar to emerald or turquoise, depending on lighting conditions. Since hfredium was used primarily in the construction of starships, most corporations that had set up shop on a given lode would set up smaller-scale gem-mining operations to procure feldnar crystals for sale on the galactic market. While feldnar crystals were prized for their beauty, they were relatively common, enough so that only the most exceptionally well-formed gems were considered for sale to the galaxy's elite.

When placed in a lightsaber, feldnar crystals produced an aquamarine blade that was wider than the norm by as much as four or five millimeters, which necessitated a different approach when constructing the hilt of the weapon. The blade emitter and the magnetic stabilizer loop had to be built with a larger diameter than what would otherwise be specified, in order to contain the wider blade. Practitioners of the Soresu style preferred this thicker blade, however, as it increased the odds of successfully deflecting or redirecting a blaster bolt. After being Knighted in the wake of the Republic's victory at Rodia, Laera Reyolé—a Soresu stylist as well as a practitioner of Shien—modified her lightsaber to accept a feldnar stone in addition to the crystal she'd found on Dantooine.

Behind the scenes[]

The name for the feldnar crystal is based on the real-world mineral feldspar. However, the two share vastly different properties, ranging from their very nature to their uses. The crystal was originally developed as an aside to give more context to fan fiction author and Star Wars Fanon Wiki administrator Sean "Goodwood" Nash's first completed novel, The Last Full Measure.
