Evelyan Sovex (/ɛˈvɛl.jʌn/) was a male Synnott Centurion of the Order of Keltrayu. He was the elder cousin of fellow Centurion Atrelle Sovex.

Biography[]

Fortunate son[]

Scion of the wealthy and influential Sovex family in the city of Haviant on Synno, Evelyan's Force sensitivity was discovered at the age of six in 123 ABY and reported to the Order of Keltrayu. The Praetor-Recruiter dispatched by the Order confirmed the Sovexes' belief that their son was a Force sensitive, though she had the distinct impression that they also believed it had to be so and that their son "deserved" to be a Centurion. Though less than thrilled with this attitude, the Order's Prefect, Tariun Sakaros, elected not to take it out on the boy and accepted him as a Novice. Not to be outdone, Evelyan's aunt and uncle had their daughter Atrelle examined by the Recruiter, who found that she too had the potential and brought her into the Order as well.

Due to his parents' influence, Evelyan began his training with some feelings of superiority and a slightly haughty air. Rin and Tariun Sakaros set to breaking him of this attitude. Constantly demanding training, regularly having the boy test his nascent skills against Novices and even Centurions vastly his superiors, and a constant emphasis on the camaraderie and familial bond among all Centurions rapidly broke him of his bad habits. The Sovexes were somewhat displeased to discover that they were not allowed to coach their son on his progress, but Evelyan himself grew to embrace his new family and its ideals, though his early-conditioned haughtiness sprang up from time to time.

Part of a group of Novices centered around the Soju Sovi Evnairis, Evelyan was close with Syuug, Luna Raquelsei, and Tycho Rowan. Though he did embrace the Order as his family, he remained particularly close with his cousin Atrelle.

A Centurion serves[]

Commissioned as a Centurion in late 138 ABY, Evelyan took law enforcement assignments throughout the Empire. He also visited his parents, who were alarmed that he was not actively aiming for promotion through the ranks of the Order or planning a career path that would eventually lead to appointment as a Consul. The meeting was disturbing for both sides, as the Sovexes felt their son should be given more authority and Evelyan, having spent the past seventeen years with the Order, was greatly disquieted by their attitude.

The Vagaari War erupted the following year, and Evelyan was one of many Centurions assigned to regular missions into Vagaari territory, remaining with the Sith Star after numerous Centurions were sent south under the command of Sorrik in 142 ABY to repulse the Ssi-ruuvi Incursion. He was devastated by Atrelle's death at the Battle of Shest Minor, though he was also proud of her sacrifice and got a Shest Minor tattoo to honor her memory.

Deployed with a wave of Royal Starfighter Corps pilots as a desperation move by Tariun Sakaros in a particularly vicious battle, Evelyan gunned down several Vagaari fighters before his ship was crippled. Knowing all was lost, he managed to pilot it into a turbolaser battery on a Vagaari warship, incinerating the emplacement even as the explosion claimed his life.

Legacy[]

After the conclusion of the Tribulation, the Consul and Tribune of Synno issued a joint edict renaming Haviant Spaceport for Atrelle and Evelyan. Evelyan's parents were present for the dedication. Though, like Atrelle, he was not interred in Keltrayu's Tomb (Atrelle had been given a burial at sea on Shest Minor, and Evelyan's body disintegrated when his fighter exploded), Evelyan was honored with a memorial plaque alongside his fellow Centurions.

Powers and abilities[]

Evelyan had strong basic training in telekinesis and telepathy, like all Centurions, though his career as a full officer of the Order was short enough that he did not progress far beyond the basic standard required to achieve the rank. Like many of his siblings, he practiced Shien, learning from such masters as Kieran Sapphire and Sato Raltharan.

Appearance and personality[]

1.75 meters (5'9") tall and lithely built for a Synnott, Evelyan Sovex had the long, shaggy hair natural to Synnotts for most of his life, although after meeting his parents in 140 ABY, he cut it short as an act of rebellion. When it was long, he tended to wear the black locks in formal braids, as well as a full but conservatively cut beard. He had bright blue eyes. Evelyan wore the uniform of the Order of Keltrayu in everyday life, and carried a single lightsaber with a gray-green blade.

Raised in a wealthy family, Evelyan was taught to appreciate and strive for prestige in his earliest years. Rin and Tariun Sakaros eventually broke him of this attitude and the belief that he was superior to others, although he occasionally had flares of pride even in adulthood. It bothered him when Jira Seezhli, his cousin's friend and a girl younger than himself, was promoted to Centurion first. On the other hand, by the time he did become a Centurion, Evelyan had come to view service and dedication as the only worthwhile paths to prestige, though he still considered prestige something of a goal. He struck many observers as overly formal to the point of stuffiness, though he was more relaxed with his friends.

Aside from his cousin Atrelle and "the 31s", Evelyan did not have many close friends. However, he admired Eskol Kaartinen and Sato Raltharan and considered them models for a Centurion's career. He was one of many Centurions who did not like the Zyked Rajj-Yo, considering him overly relaxed and informal, especially with Rin Sakaros.
