The Empire of the Hand was an Imperial splinter faction in the Unknown Regions. It was founded by Chiss Grand Admiral Mitth'raw'nuruodo—Thrawn—after his discovery and recruitment by the Empire[1] in 19 BBY.[2] Incorporating Imperial personnel and technology and controlled from a data fortress on Nirauan, it encompassed almost all of the Unknown Regions by 19 ABY, over 250 sectors in total, as well as some of Wild Space by 22 ABY.
Though Thrawn was assassinated by his Noghri bodyguard, Rukh,[3] during his campaign against the New Republic in 9 ABY, the Empire of the Hand remained independent.
