Behind the scenes[]

Working titles for this story included Lost Destiny and The Death You Know. It was partially released in the summer of 2023 and completed in February 2024.

Earlier outlines placed the bulk of the story aboard the Errant VI. Salvage Team Four would have rescued the kolto freighter in deep space, then boarded to spend days (or weeks) aiding with repairs and bonding with its crew before helping to defend from a second Sith attack during the climax. The events on Vaal and Indosa were later additions to the plot. Early drafts also featured extensive flashbacks regarding Atton Rand's past, but the author decided they did not fit with the rest of the narrative.

Shout-outs and references[]

While "Better the death you know" is presented as a spacer's proverb, the line is originally spoken by Atton in Knights of the Old Republic II, before he and the Exile cross the fuel line between the Harbinger and the Peragus Mining Facility. Similarly, the "Republic Navy proverb" is lifted from The Essential Guide to Warfare.

Atris's use of the word "unnatural" to describe dark side powers is a nod to Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith. Her use of "symbionts" is a nod to Qui-Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace. Her remark that "The loss becomes a part of you" paraphrases a line from Jedi: Fallen Order, which the author has no intention of ever playing.

Atton threatening X-C88 with being a "permanent resident" on Vaal is lifted from Empire Strikes Back, spoken by Han Solo to C-3PO on Hoth.

The Sith Adepts' conversation about Darth Revan, and particularly Bevel's contribution, is an homage to this scene from Fight Club.

The phrase "time to rumble", used by Cole Terrick, is originally spoken by Carth Onasi in Knights of the Old Republic (many, many times).

The name of the star system MS1-2962 is a reference to Expanded Universe author Matthew Stover, whose birthday is January 29, 1962 (according to Wookieepedia).
