I know your every secret. Your every desire, every word you have spoken, every ally and enemy you have, while you fumble in the dark.
—Teague as the Shadow Broker

Dorne Teague, known to the galaxy infamously as his alter ego, the "Shadow Broker" was a human male crime lord, information broker, and former SIS operative who led the crime syndicate known as the Shadow League during the Cold War and Galactic War.

Born and raised on the agriworld Chandrila in the Core Worlds, Dorne Teague was born the son of Gelros Teague, the head of the political Teague dynasty and senator of Chandrila. On his home planet, Teague met and fell in love with a girl named Eyna, who also happened to live on his farm. During the Republic's war with the resurgent Sith Empire, Chandrila was invaded by the Sith, who took some of the planet's farmers as slaves, among them Teague's childhood sweetheart.

In an effort to find her, Teague tried enlisting in the Republic Strategic Information Service, but was denied because of his young age. A sympathetic operative, however, took the young Teague as his clandestine informant. His task was to collect as much covert information as possible.

Teague became disillusioned with the SIS' dealings when he discovered that they were planning on using Teague's collected info to attack peaceful communities who happened to be situated in the Sith Empire. Believing that the SIS only cared about furthering their war with the Empire instead of focusing to protect the Republic's civilians, Teague left and went his own way.

He eventually discovered that Eyna was sold by the Empire to the Slaver's Republic in the Slave systems. Realizing the danger the Slaver's Republic posed, Teague constructed a plan to infiltrate them. He formed a team of top operatives, informants, and spies with the intention of uncovering every secret in the galaxy, from the lowest slaves to the most powerful politicians. He called his team the Shadow League, with him heading them as the Shadow Broker.

After becoming the Shadow Broker, Teague managed to discover the location of his lover. Meanwhile, what originated as his little cadre of operatives soon grew into a massive crime syndicate, located in every corner of the galaxy. The Shadow Broker used his power to sell the secrets of enemies to one another, while using the influence he gained in an effort to rescue the love of his life. He also built a headquarters hidden on the gas giant planet Tarilla.

Unfortunately, Teague did not manage to find his lover, as she was constantly being moved from place to place. Ironically, while the Shadow Broker knew every secret of every person in every faction, one question remained that he could never answer during his lifetime; where was Eyna? During his tenure as the Shadow Broker, Teague successfully managed to conceal his identity for most of his time, operating solely under the name "Shadow Broker". After almost 40 years acting as the first Shadow Broker, Teague's identity was uncovered when his right hand man, the Zabrak criminal Vergak betrayed and revealed his location to the SIS, who subsequently invaded his secret base. In an effort to safeguard all his dealings and contacts, Teague initiated the destruction of his base, but before he was briefly reunited with Eyna, who was since freed from slavery and had served the Republic as a SIS operative.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Childhood on Chandrila[]

Chandrila

Chandrila, where Teague spent his early childhood.

The man who would become the infamous Shadow Broker was born as Dorne Teague on the agriworld Chandrila in the Core Worlds. Chandrila was a member of the Galactic Republic, and Teague was the son of the wealthy Gelros Teague, senator of Chandrila. His mother, Lady Jesamine Teague, was originally from Alderaan and held a heavy fortune which the Teague family inherited once Jesamine's father died.

From an early age, Teague was exposed to the political intrigues of the Teague family. Dorne lived a life of luxury, residing in a palace filled with servant-droids catering to his every needs. The young Dorne, however, longed for a life of adventure and often fled his family's estate to explore the southern farms, which his father owned.

While exploring the farms, Dorne met Eyna, a girl Teague would develop a long infatuation with. When Teague had the chance, he would escape to the farm to spend time with her. During their early teens, Teague and Eyna decided that, when they would reach adulthood, they would leave Chandrila together and travel the galaxy.

These hopes were cut short when Chandrila was invaded by the Sith. They attacked the peaceful agriworld in an effort to strip the Republic clean of resources, while simultaneously gaining a couple slaves in the process. During the attack, the Teagues were ordered to barricade themselves inside their estate. Dorne, fearing for Eyna, went against his parents' pleas and rushed to the farms. While there, he saw Eyna and her family being dragged into a Sith starship, before taking off.

Devastated and lost, the young Teague decided to rescue her. A few days after the attack, Teague left a note behind for his parents informing them that he had left Chandrila in an effort to "find someone [he] loves". He illegally boarded a merchant vessel taking him to Coruscant, his first destination.

Early career in the SIS[]

First arrival on Coruscant[]

Young teague

A young Teague during his early SIS career.

Teague arrived in Coruscant a few days after departing Chandrila. Shortly after arriving at the spaceport, Teague was briefly apprehended by Coruscant policemen, who noticed he had arrived illegally on the mercantile freighter. After questioning, Teague claimed he was an orphan from the Mid Rim who fled to Coruscant to find a permanent new home. Believing his story, the officers handed Teague over to Myros Bekkal, an SIS agent, who agreed to take Teague to an orphanage.

Teague and Bekkal conversed for a bit, the latter explaining that he belonged to an information service of the Republic, who are tasked with gathering information and covert ops. Teague became intrigued, believing this "information service" could prove potentially vital to him finding Eyna. After arriving at the orphanage, Bekkal handed Teague over to the headmistress, a Twi'Lek woman by the name of Samara, a caring but strict woman. While in the orphanage Teague became acquainted with several other children, notably a Zabrak child named Vergak, a human boy called Faelon, and an Atoan girl called Mensa Dis.

Vergak explained to Teague that the orphanage stands to the risk of shutting down, due to declining Republic funding. He also added that due to overpopulation, the children are going to be forced to live on the streets, a prospect Teague did not quite understand due to the life he lived in luxury. Over time, Teague befriended the denizens of the orphanage, while spending time on the streets.

Teague eventually attempted to get into touch with Bekkal again, who later found him near an SIS outpost. Bekkal was impressed by Teague's inquisitiveness, and the latter expressed desire to join the SIS. Bekkal was amused, quipping that while Teague had potential; he was far too young to endure SIS training. Initially, he declined Teague's wish, but relented after Teague kept returning asking to join. Bekkal could not offer Teague a genuine position within SIS, but recruited him as his secret informant on the streets. Although Teague's true desire to join the SIS was to access their records, he settled with this meager position first.

Infiltrating Black Sun[]

Teague and Bekkal worked closely together for a couple of years. As Bekkal's secret informant, Teague quickly became acquainted with the criminal underworld; and learned much about subterfuge and infiltration. Teague spent his time on and off on the streets and at the orphanage. Samara, the orphanage headmistress, was particularly concerned with Teague's dealings, fearing he might run astray. Meanwhile, Teague's friends also grew suspicious to his activities.

Mors altan profile

Teague met the Duke while infiltrating Black Sun.

At age sixteen, Bekkal confided in Teague about a particularly dangerous assignment he and his team had been working on. Apparently, illegal armaments had made their way into Coruscant's commercial districts and were being sold clandestinely to genuine businesses. The shipments were being circulated planet-wide, changing owners and sellers frequently, going through so many bureaucratic channels it was becoming next to impossible to discern the legal commerce from the illegal ones. According to Bekkal, the head behind this scheme was a man called Mors "the Duke" Altan, a high-ranking member of the Black Sun crime syndicate.

Teague offered to help Bekkal, claiming he had garnered enough experience to accomplish this mission. Bekkal was reluctant, because of the fact that Teague was still relatively young and the Duke was a dangerous man. Eventually, Bekkal relented after Teague reminded him of all the things he had done for SIS in the years. Bekkal gave Teague the assignment to infiltrate the Black Sun as a new recruit; to get close to the Duke and find evidence to incriminate him. With help from Bekkal, Teague posed as a petty jewel thief operating in Black Sun territory. Through a set up, Teague met the Duke, and impressed him by threatening a diamond dealer whom Teague suspected of selling the Duke a fake ring.

The Duke took Teague to the Black Sun hideout, teaching him the rules of the Coruscanti criminal underworld and introducing him to his associates, Salarr and Urbax, who were close friends with the Duke and were, like him, respected leading members of Black Sun. Over the weeks, Teague became accepted by the Black Sun members and earned their trust; much to Bekkal's relief and fear.

A few weeks later, news came that a captain of Black Sun was killed, and Salarr assumed his position, while Urbax became his lieutenant, angering the Duke who provided for Salarr's family while the latter was in prison. As the crew ran a series of successful shakedowns and hijackings in Sah'c Town, Teague collected more information for Bekkal, while evidence for the illegal weapons still eluded him.

The Duke confided in Teague that he planned to take over a local cantina and run it on his own in an effort to impress Nem'ro the Hutt, a powerful crime lord and long time associate of Black Sun. The Duke offered him a brand new starship, freshly stolen from the Republic, revealing to Teague that the illegal shipments did come from him. However, it was discovered that Salarr had reached out to Nem'ro first. The Duke was angry, believing that he lost the night cantina deal because Teague colluded with Salarr. Additionally, the Duke told Teague that he would manage the cantina for him as an unofficial Black Sun member. Teague and the Duke later reconciled, and the latter confided in him about the illegal shipment trade that he had planned. Teague recorded the conversation and gave the tape to Bekkal. A year later, the Duke was arrested along with Salarr, who was released shortly after.

The Exchange[]

Exchange

Teague worked against the Exchange on Bekkal's orders.

Teague returned to Bekkal, who welcomed him with open arms. The operation was a success, and Black Sun was dealt a major blow with the Duke's capture. Shortly after, Teague was introduced to Bekkal's team; who openly revealed that he had recruited the young Teague as his agent on the field. While this revelation raised some eyebrows within the department, most lauded Teague with praise over his successful efforts. Initially, however, the Director of the SIS disapproved of Bekkal enlisting a teenager to do his work for him. However, he relented after the operation gained massive publicity, solidifying Teague's position as a hero of Coruscant. Bekkal recommended Teague for an official position within SIS, which the Director agreed to. Teague was given the position of field agent for his exemplary efforts.

Teague returned to the orphanage and revealed to his friends what he had done. They were surprised, but also intrigued. The orphanage was appalled to what Teague did in his spare time. His friends, especially Vergak, approved of what Teague had done; while Samara was not so pleased, she was nonetheless proud. Teague proposed to his friends that they come work with him as their informants, just how Teague started out. They agreed, joining the SIS shortly after.

In the years that followed, Teague built up a reputation as a capable operative, while his friends in turn also became official members of the Information Service. In the meantime, Teague delved deep into the SIS' archives in hopes of finding information on Eyna. He also quickly became corrupt, offering illegal slavers some form of judicial immunity in exchange for information on slaves coming in and out from the Outer Rim, hoping Eyna's name would be included. While studying the SIS' archives, Teague uncovered ancient archaeological data claiming that his former orphanage stands on a culturally significant ground. He later used this information to persuade the Galactic Senate to continue funding the orphanage, with success. In return, the orphanage was renamed to the "Dorne Teague Sanctuary", in his honor.

Sometime later, Bekkal informed Teague of the Exchange's rising power in Coruscant after the Duke's fall. He claimed they have taken over his lucrative arms business, and have come under the power of the Compeer, currently the most powerful gang leader in the city. He tasked Teague with crippling the Compeer's hold on Coruscant by any means necessary.

Teague decided to use the Compeer's resources against him. He planted Faelon as a mole within the Exchange under the leadership of the underboss Ukabi. Over the next months, Faelon rose within the Exchange hierarchy, becoming acquainted with Ukabi and by extension to the Compeer. He gained their trust and joined their inner circle, while relaying information back to Teague.

However, Faelon became compromised when the SIS received word that the Exchange in turn had planted a mole within the Information Service. A cat and mouse game ensued, in which Teague became entangled. He told Faelon of this and instructed him to find the identity of the mole, meanwhile gang violence increased on the streets, and Teague's patience was wearing thin. He still searched for information on Eyna, but could not access the SIS' restricted records if he did not get promoted; and he could only get promoted by completing this mission which now stood on the brink of collapse.

To remedy this, Teague and Faelon decided to recruit a specialized force of SIS undercover agents and sent them into the Exchange. Using clandestine information on Ukabi, who had become ambitious and had long talked about overthrowing the Compeer, they managed to strain Ukabi and the Compeer's relationship with each other and the result were schisms that erupted in the Exchange' leadership, some loyal to Ukabi and some to the Compeer.

Coruscanti Gang War[]
Coruscanti gang war

The violence in the underworld caused an all-out war.

In 3659 BBY, after Republic Day, the violence in the streets erupted. A violent power struggle between Ukabi and the Compeer reached a boiling point, while renegade Exchange soldiers attempted to invade Justicar territory in sector 439. The ongoing illegal arms trafficking collapsed as Faelon sabotaged their operations at Teague's behest. Tensions rose to a boiling point after Faelon was discovered by the Exchange to be the mole they had been searching for. After Teague learnt of this, he attempted to rescue him, but to no avail. Faelon was taken in an airspeeder and thrown off, smashing into the streets below.

Shattered, Teague attempted to uncover the reason behind the Exchange's sudden revelation of Faelon's alliance. Mensa Dis, in particular, was distraught to learn of Faelon's fate; initially blaming Teague for causing his death. Vergak, however, pointed out that the mole in the SIS must have discovered Faelon's identity and informed Ukabi. An internal investigation followed, while Teague decided to return to the field once more.

Eventually, an all-out war erupted between Ukabi's Exchange and the Compeer's Exchange for control of the Coruscant underworld. Ultimately, this was Teague's plan; to cause an internal power struggle within the Exchange. However, the violence that erupted from this war proved more destructive than initially projected. The Galactic Senate believed the violence to have gotten out of control and so sent in Jedi Master Orgus Din to pacify the gangs.

About a week later, the SIS received word that one of their moles within the Exchange noticed Ukabi passing a datapad over to a man dressed in SIS garments. Teague decided to follow up on this lead, with Vergak and Mensa Dis aiding him; the latter coming along to avenge the death of Faelon.

At around four days later, Mensa Dis was kidnapped by an unknown assailant, who left behind a note. It was addressed specifically to Teague, who informed him to meet in an alley near Rik's Cantina in the underworld. While Vergak advised against it; believing it was a trap, Teague decided to go anyways; assuming the person who took Dis was the mole they had been looking for.

Teague arrived in the mentioned alleyway in Rik's Cantina, a shrouded place with very few visitors. A masked man stepped from the shadows, cloaked and speaking through a voice changer. After Teague ordered him to tell where Dis was, the mysterious stranger assured him she was safe; and that he only took her to talk to him. Confused, Teague asked for the man's identity, who then promptly removed his mask and revealed himself to be Myros Bekkal. Stunned, Teague could not understand why Bekkal would be an Exchange gangster, to which he replied that he did not belong to the Exchange, but was in fact a double agent acting on behalf of Imperial Intelligence. He revealed that he was sent to cause disorder within the Coruscant trade sector, and so had allowed Black Sun and the Exchange to set up business in the underworld. Furthermore, he added that the information Teague provided while he was an informant was used by Bekkal to instruct the Sith Empire to attack vulnerable farming communities the Republic used to boost their food supplies.

Stunned, Teague felt betrayed and used, to the point of completely disillusioning with everything the Republic and SIS stood for, despite the fact that he himself was a corrupt agent initially joining for ambitious reasons. Bekkal goaded him, claiming he had learnt nothing from his time under his wing, while also chastising him for his quick nature to trust. Teague in turn held him at gunpoint, demanding he turn Dis over. Bekkal laughed at the remark, claiming Dis was already dead as he delivered her to the Exchange as his part of a deal; in which he double-crossed both the Empire and the Republic and using the chaos of the ongoing gang war to reap the spoils and take over the criminal underworld. Teague then attempted to shoot him, but Bekkal put up a shield and shot in response, critically injuring him. He then left the scene, leaving Teague for dead.

Rise to power[]

Taking over the streets[]

You talk about vengeance, yet you still haven't claimed it. Why not? What are you afraid of? Him? The Republic? Let me tell you something about the Republic. It's a machine. A construct designed to rule the weak and suppress those who have voices. There are no less than 270,000 Republic officers in this district alone, and many more across this planet. It is true, you are outnumbered. But what do I see before me? Fifty-and-seven delegates from over twelve thousand gangs. The Azure Company standing next to the Cardinal Cross. The Red Jackals sharing their table with the Grey Lilies and the Black Gundarks. I say we have enough power to take this city. We drive Bekkal from power and take what is ours. This world is ours!
—Dorne Teague rallies the gangs of Coruscant.

Unspecified amounts of time passed, as Teague awoke on a makeshift bed in a dark alley. As he came to his senses, he noticed a large amount of people dressed in tattered SIS and Black Sun clothing conversing with one another. He looked to his side and saw Vergak tending to his wounds. He claimed that Teague very nearly died from a near-fatal gunshot wound. He also claimed that he discovered Bekkal's true allegiance and that he tried to persuade the SIS to impeach him, but was overruled. Teague then asked what had transpired since, to which Vergak answered that a few SIS operatives believed Vergak and followed him, and that he also found help in former Black Sun members who still roamed the streets after the Duke's arrest.

Teague addresses crime lords

Teague organizes the crime lords of Coruscant under his rule.

Teague attempted to sit up, then noticed the Duke himself approaching him. Now considerably older - and still bitter about what Teague had done to him - the Duke explained that Vergak helped him escape prison and that he wishes to take back his streets and oust the Exchange and Bekkal. Teague was still reluctant, believing the Duke to be inconsolably angry with him, which he admitted to. Vergak then explained that the gang war has gone out of hand, and that the Coruscant underworld is on the brink of collapse. The Duke then came forward and offered help, claiming some former Black Suns still answer to him and that he can help him defeat Bekkal. After some consideration, Teague agreed.

A few days later, Vergak, the Duke, and Teague decided to come up with a plan. Because Bekkal now controlled both the Exchange and SIS, he was too powerful to be taken on directly. The Senate would not help because they still trusted Bekkal, and Teague and the Duke did not have enough men. Teague then came up with a plan to damage Bekkal's reputation and send him running. The Duke was unconvinced, claiming that wars are won with soldiers, not with words. Teague countered this, jokingly admitting that Bekkal's lessons did leave an effect on him, in that Teague had learnt that information can be a powerful weapon that can outsmart both money and arms. When Vergak asked how this could help, Teague came up with an elaborate scheme to take over the HoloNet and tap into Republic and Exchange communications.

Teague, Vergak, and the Duke stole slicing equipment from the SIS, specialized armament not available to the public. According to Vergak, these equipment were first developed as a means to tap into Imperial communications, but were deemed too experimental and dangerous if in the hands of the wrong person, as the device could very easily implement a trojan-like virus that could keep itself concealed; although for only a few weeks until it would eventually be discovered, and the identity of the slicer could always be traced; unless the slicer did not exist in Republic records. The trio made their way to the central HoloNet servers and used the slicing software to hack into the HoloNet. Teague connected the software to his datapad, after which they quickly left.

After the trio returned to their hideout, they found out that the software managed to siphon streams of data from the HoloNet, some containing archival footage from Bekkal's criminal past. They also found out that Myros Bekkal was not his real name, that he was really a man called Rybek Moksal, an infamous criminal and con artist. They managed to discover that Moksal was still indebted to many gangs on Coruscant, and that he had a large criminal history that went back at least a decade. Teague decided to sent Vergak to contact these crime lords, attempting to win them over to his side.

A few months later, the gang war was still in full swing, while the SIS troubled to maintain order. Vergak called for a meeting with the underworld's most respected gang leaders, who chafed under the criminal monopoly imposed by the Exchange under Bekkal's control. At the meeting, Teague revealed himself while concealing his identity behind a mask. The gangsters were confused, after which Teague proclaimed that he knew who Myros Bekkal truly was, and revealed his real identity to the gang lords present. He promised them Bekkal's head on a spike, if they would only follow in his stead. Although they all proclaimed their support to Teague, one gang lord spoke out against him, requesting the identity behind this "shadow broker". Afterwards, Teague introduced himself thus, as a Shadow Broker.

Teague took on the name "the Shadow Broker", while his little militia grew in size. Soon, they managed to drive off the Exchange from the streets. As the Shadow Broker, Teague gave his defeated enemies a choice; swear allegiance and join him in conquering the criminal world, or be vanquished. This continued for a few months, and Bekkal grew agitated. His identity had become known and he was branded a traitor and backstabber. He was ousted from the SIS, and the Exchange had begun to pursue him.

Rise of the Shadow League[]

You did it, my friend. Coruscant is yours. What do you want to do with it?"
"Coruscant is just one of many worlds. I need the galaxy to find her, Vergak. We've only just begun.

—Dorne Teague and Vergak.

On the eve of Republic Day, Teague made the ultimate gamble to put both an end to the war and capture Bekkal. Teague planted explosives around the Exchange's headquarters in the Works district and blew it up, broadcasting the event live to the entire population of Coruscant, for he knew Bekkal would be watching too. In response, both the SIS and Jedi Order began to investigate the Shadow Broker's activities. The Senate in general was concerned with the rise of this one mysterious individual. Meanwhile, a popular forum on the HoloNet began to name this secret army of the Shadow Broker as the "Shadow League", a new rising power in the criminal underworld.

Over the months, Teague decided to reveal tiny bits of classified information on Bekkal, the SIS and the Exchange, in an effort to smear both of them. In response, mass protests took place near the SIS headquarters; with the protesters convinced that in having such an infamous criminal as one of their top officers in their ranks surely meant they were corrupt. Meanwhile, the Exchange gradually lost support from the other gangs, while some Exchange members no longer partook in the ongoing gang war and fled to Nar Shaddaa. Bit by bit, Bekkal lost power and influence; much to his chagrin.

Eventually, Bekkal relented and requested an audience with the "Shadow Broker." Vergak and the Duke advised against it, believing that Bekkal would just as easy kill Teague again if he discovers who he is. Teague, however, was confident and decided to go anyway. Teague was instructed to go to the old Exchange headquarters in the Works, which is where Bekkal would be waiting for him.

Dorne the shadow broker

Teague becomes the Shadow Broker.

Bekkal met Teague at the Exchange headquarters; as per instruction. Once there, Bekkal commended the Shadow Broker on singlehandedly destroying his reputation and power. He was surprised that this one man succeeded in toppling such power even without force, to which the Broker claimed he had learnt from the best. He told Bekkal that he was once taught that information - in the right hands - could do more damage than armies ever could. A bitter Bekkal then requested the Broker to remove his mask, so that he could see his rival himself. The Broker did so, revealing himself to be Teague - who survived his earlier encounter with Bekkal. The latter was shocked and appalled, yet not too surprised. He chuckled as he saw Teague's face; claiming he taught him well.

Teague then proclaimed that Bekkal indeed had taught him a great many things. To keep your enemies close, to never reveal your hand in a game of power and influence, and to find opportunities in any situation. As if on cue, a large cadre of SIS carriers swarmed at Bekkal's position, after which Teague revealed that he had anonymously tipped off that the Shadow Broker would be returning to the Works district. The slicing software installed earlier had been discovered, but Teague had destroyed his identity in the Republic records and retraced the slicing software to Bekkal. He ironically thanked Bekkal for his many lessons, before donning his mask once more. Bekkal angrily shouted at Teague, promising him that he would have his revenge. Teague responded by saying that "Dorne Teague" was dead, and did no longer exist. Bekkal was then swarmed by SIS agents, but attempted to fight them off; being killed in the process. After his death, Teague retrieved Bekkal's voice changer from him.

Teague returned to his hideout where Vergak greeted him. The latter explained that the Shadow League had gained a reputation on the streets. The war was all but over, the Compeer had been assassinated and Ukabi gained a top position within the Exchange. With Bekkal gone, Teague decided to solidify his power on Coruscant. He sent word to Ukabi, expressing that he wanted to meet with him in a public cantina somewhere.

Teague and Ukabi met in Dealer's Den, a cantina in the old Galactic Market. Teague sat in a dark corner, his face concealed by a hood and wearing his voice changer. Ukabi addressed Teague as the Shadow Broker; unaware of his real identity. The latter admitted his position and invited Ukabi to sit with him. After ordering some drinks, Ukabi asked Teague why he had invited him; to which Teague exclaimed that Bekkal was dead, as well as the Compeer, and that Ukabi practically ruled the Exchange. Ukabi corrected him, saying that elections are held whenever a new Compeer has to be a chosen, and that he is most likely to be passed over after the war.

Teague then acquiesced to Ukabi's feelings, claiming that his gang has now grown exponentially after the war. Ukabi admitted that he has lost Coruscant, and that the Shadow League has indeed become very powerful. Afterwards, Teague offered Ukabi a deal; a partnership between the two. Ukabi would be the Shadow Broker's eyes and ears on the streets and Teague would arrange his promotion. Ukabi was unimpressed, yet Teague assured him he would never break a deal; and that he would always pay his debts. Teague offered a probationary period; where trust could be established before entering a full partnership. Ukabi was intrigued, and agreed for now. Afterwards, Teague called for one of his aides and whispered something to him, after which the aide promptly ran off. Teague thanked Ukabi for coming and walked away, much to the latter's confusion. A week later, Ukabi would receive a top promotion within the Exchange; being granted dominion of Nar Shaddaa's lucrative cybernetics business.

Constructing the Shadow Fortress[]

After a year, Teague solidified his position in the criminal underworld. He became the top target on the SIS watchlist. However, his name and location were next to impossible to discern. Dorne Teague was erased from Republic records, and the slicer software him and the Duke installed earlier was retraced to Bekkal; having the SIS initially believe he was the Shadow Broker. After awhile, however, Teague acknowledged that staying in Coruscant proved too dangerous for him; as the SIS would be cracking down on him any second.

Teague decided to relocate their base of operations somewhere safe; to a secure location where neither the SIS nor rival gangs could find him. Vergak suggested to settle on a desolate planet, somewhere on the far fringes of space. Vergak produced a map and pointed to a region of Wild Space known as the Dead Sector, a relatively unknown region of space uninhabited by any species. It did not fall under most records, and setting up shop on a local gas giant in the vicinity could help them conceal their presence from even the most advanced radars. Vergak pointed to a particular gas giant known as Tarilla, which produced some of the most violent storms on any planet. One side of the planet was flaming hot, while on the other it was extremely cold. As such, perpetual storm cells occurred wherever the sun was rising or setting.

Teague then told his lieutenants that they needed to construct a base that was able to both follow the rising or setting sun indefinitely, withstand the extreme climate of the planet, and have enough capacity to store a supercomputer that was able to operate into almost any communication hub in the galaxy. The Duke stepped forward, claiming he had an old contact within the Techno Union who was one of the best engineers in the galaxy; Alistair Kuat, the heir of the Kuat Drive Yards corporation. Teague asked the Duke to arrange a meeting with Kuat, to talk terms.

In league with the Kuats[]
I have power and resources of plenty."
"Yeah, but a guy can only have as much power until he collapses under it. Consider this: you got a good thing going around here, I'll admit. But the more you grow the more attention to draw to yourself and I'm not just talking about Republic officers, psycho gangsters or ambitious spacers, I'm also talking about your own folks looking to strangle you in your sleep and take over everything you've built. You want anonymity but for a man of your caliber you're way too easy to find. Scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. You want to be anonymous, I can help you stay anonymous. Just help a fella out here, would ya?

—Alistair Kuat's business proposal to Dorne Teague.
Shadow fortress construciton

The Shadow Fortress constructed by Kuat Drive Yards.

Teague met Kuat on a secure location in Coronet City, Corellia, near one of the industrial islands. As usual, Teague was masked and used a voice changer. Kuat stepped out of a limousine accompanied by two henchmen. Kuat teased the Shadow Broker on his usage of a mask, to which Teague did not respond to. The Duke also accompanied Teague, and Kuat joyfully greeted him. He then inquired about what he could do for the "infamous Shadow Broker", after which Teague replied that he needed a base of operations constructed on a gas giant. Kuat chuckled for a bit, claiming that he never built a space station on the surface of a gas giant before, admitting it would be an ambitious and costly enterprise. Teague remarked that coin wasn't an issue, and that he just wanted to know if it was possible. Kuat confirmed the possibility of building such a construction, claiming it would take a few months to get all the resources, equipment, manpower, and the necessary secrecy to make sure that such a large effort construction would not go noticed. Construction itself would take several years. Kuat asked for the price of between 700,000 and 1,000,000 credits, to which Teague agreed to. Kuat promised blueprints in the coming weeks, before leaving.

A few months later, Teague was contacted by Kuat, who sent him various blueprints of the proposed space station. It included several - but limited - surface weaponry, a hangar fit to include starfighters and one carrier, and a massive computer capable of communication across the galaxy. Teague approved the blueprints, afterwards Kuat Drive Yards began its construction.

In the next few years covering the Shadow Fortress' construction, Kuat contacted Teague about a favor he needed. Teague claimed he owed him no favours, as he already paid for the starbase's construction. Kuat then admitted that he owed a particular powerful rival money, and that his company stood on the brink of bankruptcy if he didn't resolve the issue. He also claimed his father, the CEO of Kuat Drive Yards, had disowned him and he needed depose him and take over the company. Teague scoffed at the remark asking him why he would want to help him. Kuat then told Teague that he had discovered his identity; much to Teague's terror. Teague angrily pointed out that Kuat was blackmailing him, but Kuat rebuked that statement; stating that for a man of his status his identity was far too easy to uncover. Kuat offered to help and advise Teague, to keep his identity secret and help him navigate throughout both the criminal and political world. He also told Teague that he discovered the identity of the person Teague was looking for; claiming that he knew where Eyna was. Afterwards, Teague accepted Kuat's pleas for help, and promised him he would use his connections to help him take over his company.

A few years later, the Shadow Fortress was nearing the end of its construction. Kuat repeatedly asked for more investments, since this undertaking was high risk because of the fact they built an illicit station technically still in Republic space. Furthermore, Teague was preoccupied trying to help Kuat take over his own company. Kuat told Teague that the rival they needed to take care of was Machus Harn, a powerful oligarch from the Slaver's Republic. Kuat truthfully told Teague that Machus was a dangerous man who was completely backed by the Council of Katrides, the Slaver's Republic's ruling government cabinet. Kuat then told Teague that his men had found a leak in the Sith Empire's records, claiming that in it stood a record of a young woman from Chandrila who was sold to Machus shortly after the Sith had invaded Teague's home and captured Eyna. Not believing it a coincidence, Teague decided to set up a meeting with Machus in person. Kuat was adamantly against the idea; while Teague claimed his reputation was enough to convince him to come meet with the great Shadow Broker.

Teague sent one of his spies to Machus Harn's home, inviting him to a meeting on the still-incomplete Shadow Fortress. Shortly afterwards, Teague received a response claiming that it would be Harn's honor to meet with him. A few days later, Harn arrived at the Shadow Fortress, accompanied with a few bodyguards. He was amazed at the scope of the Shadow Fortress' size and magnitude. Teague - as the Shadow Broker - invited Harn to the Broker's Citadel, a partially-complete throne room/command center hybrid. Harn admitted he was amazed and surprised why the Shadow Broker would meet with him in person. The Broker claimed that he had a business proposition for Harn that would be of equal benefit.

Teague offered Harn a partnership with the Shadow League, a three-year probationary contract in which Teague would be offering Harn exclusive access to information on his rivals and competitors, essentially providing him with an advantage over his enemies. In exchange, Harn was to let go of all lingering debts he still demanded from Alistair Kuat. Harn laughed at the response, being mildly offended. He claimed it was Kuat who sent the Broker to deal with him. Teague admitted he was hired by Kuat, but also claimed that he held no allegiances to anyone and that everyone had equal opportunity to barter with him. Harn admitted he was tempted with the offer, but also said that it would give him satisfaction to see Kuat collapse beneath the stacks of debts he still owed. Eventually, Harn relented and accepted the deal. Teague then claimed that in the society of the Slaver's Republic - it was custom for two businessmen to conclude a successful transaction with the exchange of a single slave. Harn laughed and said that the Broker had done his homework, admitting that it is customary for him to give Teague one slave. Teague then said that Harn was in possession of a young woman called "Eyna of Chandrila", and that Teague has had his eyes on her for quite a while. Harn laughed, calling Teague a "cheeky old devil". He then truthfully admitted that Eyna had escaped slavery a few weeks ago and he had no idea where she was, apologizing for the inconvenience. Internally shattered but remaining stoic, Teague then said that any slave fit for manual labour would do as replacement. Harn bowed in acceptance and then left the station.

Although this meeting proved to be a setback to Teague's personal goals, he had gained an ally within the Slaver's Republic and managed to win Kuat over to his side. Afterwards, Teague had sent one of his envoys to Kuat Drive Yards to talk with Alistair's father. The envoy told him that his organization had discovered his deepest, darkest secrets; including an affair with a Twi'lek woman ten years his junior. Alistair's father immediately stepped down, allowing his son to take over the company with ease.

War of the Confederacy[]

BrokerShip

The Shadow Fortress completed.

Sometime later, the Shadow Fortress had reached completion. The end result was a massive, 1 kilometer-long ship perpetually following Tarilla's setting sun. Large conduction rods installed on the ship's hull converted the electricity from Tarilla's storms into renewable, endless energy in combination with a hypermatter annihilator. In the Broker's Citadel, the heart of the ship, a large supercomputer had been installed which connected Teague to his associates and contacts throughout the galaxy, vastly simplifying the bureaucracy within the Shadow League's leadership system and ensuring a permanent means of communication with his underlings, which in turn provided Teague with a steady supply of information ready to be distributed at his command.

Teague became distraught after learning that Eyna had been lost again. However, he did not believe Harn's claims that the Slaver's Republic did not know where she was. Teague decided to send his own spies into the Slaver's Republic - despite his deal with Harn. Vergak and Altan protested against this, reminding Teague that the Republic remains a glorified interstellar crime syndicate that holds incredible amounts of power - eclipsing even Teague's own power base. However, Teague became even more intrigued after learning this - deciding to move against the Slaver's Republic and take over their empire, much to Vergak's chagrin.

One of the spies sent into the Slaver's Republic reported back to the Shadow Broker; telling him that Harn had been warned of the Broker's true intentions of finding Eyna before Teague even approached him with the deal. Teague concluded that the Slaver's Republic had possibly sent their own spies within the Shadow League back when the Shadow Fortress was first constructed. One of those spies had betrayed Teague, and he was now forced to sent inquisitions into his own organization to weed out traitors and belligerents. The Duke suggested that the most obvious traitor must've been Kuat, since he was the one who approached Teague to meet Harn in the first place. Teague decided to keep a closer eye on Kuat, while not ruling out this theory entirely.

Teague contacted Harn and confronted him about his discoveries - partly to provoke the slaver in entering to an open conflict with the Shadow League, so that Teague could begin his invasion of the slave systems. Harn was offended, claiming that he sent no such spies into the Shadow League. Teague - who had an excellent judge of character - called him out on his lies, after which Harn admitted that he feared Teague's fledgling criminal empire would prove detrimental to the Slaver's Republic's future efforts. Teague then ended the call - promising retribution.

First blood[]

Teague convened with his advisers - consciously including Kuat to test his loyalty - and told them of the impending conflict that would soon occur with the Slaver's Republic. Teague chose to fight a war of attrition, admitting that the Shadow League did not yet have the numbers nor manpower to face the Slaver's Republic in open conflict. Instead, he opted to send spies into the Republic, collect as much dirty information on them as possible, and exhaust them of their morale. Furthermore, he instructed the Duke to assassinate key members of the Republic - including members of the slaver state's ruling Council of Katrides and several oligarchs who held the most sway over the six slave systems.

Vergak suggested to sway some of the oligarchs over to Teague's side - using information to blackmail them. Teague agreed, while ordering Kuat to use his political connections to draw some of the oligarchs into the open so that Teague could convince them to switch sides personally. Kuat was reluctant to do so, claiming that he is not on good terms with the Slaver's Republic - and that he doubts any of his third-party connections would be willing to make such a bold move against an organization as powerful as the Slave Syndicate. Teague became distrustful of Kuat's reluctant nature, but agreed to his worries.

A few days later, the Slaver's Republic committed first blood by attacking a transport vessel of the Shadow League - containing weaponry and armaments. Viewing it as an official proclamation of war, Teague initiated his plans. Some of the spies sent into the organization had managed to unveil private and deeply personal secrets concerning several key members of the Slaver's Republic, using it as leverage to have them move against their allies. Teague restricted the use of conventional warfare as not to exhaust his own numbers too quickly, instead continuing a war of attrition and psychological manipulation.

War of the confederacy

Under the guise of betrayal, Teague initiated a war with the Slaver's Republic.

Sometime later, Teague attempted to contact Kuat after a power supply within the Shadow Fortress malfunctioned - requesting repairs. However, Kuat did not respond, and he was found missing from his family's estate on Kuat or in any of his personal holdings on Corellia. Teague asked one of Kuat's underlings where he was, who claimed Kuat was bedridden and ill, staying on a personal retreat on Yavin 4 to "get better." Teague did not trust this, but decided to assume the claim as truth for now.

A day later, one of Vergak's spies was discovered and apprehended by the Slaver's Republic. They tortured him and broadcasted the ordeal to the Shadow Broker directly. Under duress, the spy revealed to the torturous oligarchs that he was sent by the Shadow Broker. Afterwards, the torturers executed the spy, closing the broadcast by calling Teague out for choosing his allies poorly and that "no one should trust a Kuat." Angered and frustrated, Teague finally concluded that Kuat had betrayed him, using his "illness" as a cover-up while Kuat was no doubt busy organizing the spy's planned capture and torture. Teague, along with a squadron of bodyguards, went to Yavin 4 to retrieve and interrogate Kuat.

Teague and his men stormed Kuat's personal abode and dragged him out of it - the latter protesting and pleading ignorance. He was then given a sedative that knocked him out cold, and was taken back to the Shadow Fortress. Once there, Kuat was repeatedly beaten by torturers who ordered him to confess his treason - but Kuat continued to plead innocence, while Teague revealed to him that the oligarch told him that it was Kuat who betrayed Teague all along. Alistair remained defiant and repeatedly claimed that he did not betray Teague - calling it foolish and suicidal to be in league with the Slaver's Republic. Unconvinced, Teague ceased the beatings but kept Kuat imprisoned.

Massacre of Ceria[]

As the conflict continued, the Shadow League struck a massive blow against the Slaver's Republic by successfully eliminating Solarus Vashal - the General-Governor of the Slaver's Republic and its nominal leader. Although the office of the General-Governor did not hold as much power and sway as the Republic's oligarchs, Solarus was an exception in that he held vast holdings and a large personal army - who then abandoned the Slaver's Republic after Solarus' death. Nevertheless, the Slaver's Republic refused to admit defeat - while Teague was convinced that the Republic's days were numbered and he only had to deal the finishing blow.

A few weeks after Vashal's death, one of the Shadow League's members - Leto Jinth - sought an audience with the Shadow Broker, claiming to have grave news. Intrigued, Teague decided to grant him an audience. Leto nervously approached the masked Shadow Broker, claiming that they were forced to apprehend a Shadow League spy named "Charter" - an individual Teague did not know. Leto claimed that Charter was missing a few days in and before the unnamed spy had been caught and his torture broadcasted to Teague. When Leto went to confront Charter, he noticed that her star map pointed out a recent trip to the Ayruti sector, and after a short firefight, Leto immobilized Charter - who gleefully confessed his treason. The Shadow Broker ordered this "Charter" to be brought before him, the latter finally admitting it was she who betrayed the Shadow League from the beginning. She had been closely spying on Teague for a long time and although she had not managed to find out the Shadow Broker's identity - she did managed to capture the name "Eyna", which she relayed back to Harn. Charter also claimed that the Slaver's Republic was out to vanquish the Shadow League from the very beginning and that they have probably executed Eyna not long ago. Infuriated, Teague became eager to execute Charter then and there, but instead decided to use her for his final plan one last time.

Teague destroys the slavers

In one fell stroke, Teague killed all major Slaver oligarchs.

Teague sent Charter back into the Slaver's Republic, equipped with a chip inserted inside her skin that only Teague knew what it would do. He ordered her to invite all of the Republic's oligarchs to a banquet under the guise that she managed to assassinate the Shadow Broker and topple his dynasty. The oligarchs believed it immediately, together celebrating their "victory" over the Shadow Broker. The banquet was organized inside of Machus Harn's estate on the planet Ceria, present were the Republic's most powerful oligarchs. After a toasting of victory, Charter walked into the banquet, reciting a speech directed to the slavers which Teague wrote. In it, Teague goaded the slavers for choosing their enemies so unwisely, closing the statement by remembering them that he made a promise of retribution - which had now come. Teague remotely detonated the mystery chip inside Charter's skin, causing the estate to blow up in a fury, killing all inside - including Harn.

A fragile peace[]

Your leaders are dead. Your houses burn. But you live. I give you this opportunity to surrender now. Because if you refuse, I will not stop until the six slave systems hold nothing but dead stars and barren worlds.
—The Shadow Broker presents his ultimatum to the slave lords.

After this event, the Shadow League installed a puppet politician of their own; Khet'kazen, who was named the new General-Governor and inherited much of Harn's estate. The Slaver's Republic suffered a sociopolitical crisis in the aftermath following the death of nearly half of the Republic's leaders, though they were now subservient to the Shadow League. Teague quickly consolidated his dominance over his former rivals. Those who openly spoke out against Teague's victory were quickly silenced; diplomatically or otherwise.

In the time that followed, the Shadow League's might only grew. Everyone now knew what power the Shadow Broker wielded, and a new trade found its way in the galaxy; information, and Teague was its market leader. By controlling the Slaver's Republic, Teague had access into the Sith Empire, scouring their and the Slaver's Republic's records for any sign of Eyna's whereabouts, though he found none.

Shadow league poster

"He Watches." A Shadow League propaganda poster.

Teague locked himself away in his study for three days - analyzing and cross-referencing all data he found in the Slaver's Republic and the Sith Empire's records. None mentioned Eyna. What Teague did find - however - were strategically critical and deeply private records of the Sith Empire's highest-ranking leaders, including sitting members of the Dark Council. Teague stored these valuable pieces of information away - while he felt - ironically - utterly defeated by not managing to find Eyna's location.

The Duke personally congratulated Teague for defeating the Slaver's Republic, commending him on his tactic of eliminating the Republic's leaders in one fell stroke. Vergak, however, was infuriated. He greatly disapproved of Teague's tactic of blowing up the Republic's members, as Teague also killed a multitude of innocent slaves who were serving the oligarchs at that time. Teague dismissed Vergak, claiming it was the price they needed to pay for victory. Vergak then claimed that he was confused as to why Teague went through all this trouble - killing innocents and torturing others - just to find Eyna. Furious, Teague explained that he would do anything to find her, even if that included acts of evil, much to Vergak's disappointment and shock.

Teague then spoke to Kuat and released him - apologizing for his imprisonment and brief torture. Although saddened and angry, Kuat seemed to have forgiven Teague, understanding that he seemed suspect after he was absent for so long. He claimed he was ill with Cardooine Chills. which caused his absence. Teague seemed to playfully jest Kuat by asking if the Chills had done more damage to him than the beatings, but then grew grim by suggesting that - should he feel to do so - he best not betray Teague, mentioning the Massacre of Ceria as an example of the extent of his retribution.

Later years and criminal dominance[]

Dorne teague old

An older Teague at the height of his power.

Nearly forty years later, the Shadow League had become the most powerful organization in the galaxy - eclipsing renowned criminal groups such as Black Sun, the Exchange, and the Slaver's Republic. Successfully, Teague managed to conceal his identity for an additional forty years - while the mere name "Shadow Broker" instilled fear and respect in the hearts of many. Sith Lords, Grand Moffs, Senators, and corrupt Jedi alike sought audiences with the Shadow Broker - as did former enemies such as Slaver's Republic oligarchs and Black Sun gangsters. All looking to gain an edge over their enemies, discover their partners' most inner secrets, or other clandestine information. Some sold their entire estates just to gain a favor with the Shadow Broker.

Teague, now well into his fifties, was the most powerful gangster alive. His legend extending beyond the likes of characters such as Nok Drayen or Nem'ro the Hutt. Ironically, his secret identity only added to his mystery and renown. Meanwhile, the Galactic Republic had finally considered the Shadow League their number one enemy, focusing almost all of their attention on uncovering the secret of the Shadow Broker and toppling his dynasty.

As Teague's power base grew - so did his enemies. The Galactic Republic had sent SIS members into his organization, but thanks to access to an almost endless supply of information, Teague was able to snuff out traitors and informants almost instantly. Meanwhile, some ambitious crime lords attempted to drive the Shadow League's presence off their worlds, only to mysteriously "disappear" a few days later. Alistair Kuat built and extended his influence even beyond Kuat Drive Yards, adding to Teague's power. The Duke, already a grizzled old man, still held considerable influence within the criminal underworld, providing Teague with a sizeable force of soldiers, while Vergak spearheaded the organization's spy network. Teague admitted that Vergak was still bitter about Teague's dealings with the slavers forty years earlier, and that he was above all more emotional and sensitive than his peers - much to Teague's chagrin.

Failing health[]

Enemies. I'm surrounded by them. Slimy, scheming yes-men. They laugh at my jokes, nod at my suggestions but as soon as I turn my back they are more than prepared to plunge a dagger in it. Foes and false friends are all around me. They infest my fortress. Whenever I close my eyes I can see their conniving faces staring back at me.
—Dorne Teague relays his paranoid suspicions to Vergak

Just as Teague's power grew, so did his health fail. Following the War of the Confederacy, Teague isolated himself in his Broker's Citadel - growing increasingly distrustful of his allies, underlings, and even his friends. He remained wary of Vergak and especially Alistair Kuat, believing them to be in league with the Slaver's Republic. Meanwhile, Teague descended into alcoholism and suffered from numerous medical ailments.

Broker's citadel

Teague secluded within his Citadel.

Because Teague became convinced that Eyna was forever out of his reach and could very well be long dead, Teague became entirely disillusioned with the world and maintained a distance from any physical contact. He kept in touch with his contacts and partners through his Shadow Broker persona, but because of this the line of where Dorne Teague ended and the Shadow Broker began became increasingly blurred. Vergak was the only person who frequently visited Teague aside from assistant and medical droids, whose memory of Teague's identity would be deleted after each visit.

At some point in his later life, Teague contracted an illness which made it difficult for him to walk. He would often limp and complain of back and leg aches. He continued to refuse from medical assistance from any non-droids, claiming that unlike pre-programmed droids - organic doctors could slip in a poison and kill him.

Just as Teague's mental and physical health deteriorated, Vergak became increasingly concerned and wary of Teague. He saw the extent of his ruthlessness and cruelty firsthand, and as Teague aged so seemingly did his blood-thirst. Nevertheless, Vergak seemed to remain Teague's only remaining true friend, and for the rest of Teague's life the only person ever allowed near him.

Declining power and downfall[]

At around 3639 BBY, Teague began to neglect his duties while remaining defiantly stubborn to advise from his councilors. He had been preoccupied with his failing mental health that he did not begin to care for his leadership of the Shadow League. As a result, the Shadow League began to gradually weaken. Some gangsters within the organization rebelled and went their own way. Local crime lords slowly but surely drove the Shadow League off their planets, and ambitious contacts of the Shadow Broker refused to pay their yearly tributes to him.

Mors Altan noticed this, repeatedly calling Teague to action - claiming the Shadow League was losing its power and influence. Teague remained unconvinced and told the Duke he could do whatever he wanted, so long as Teague was left alone. Eventually, the Duke became frustrated with Teague's lack of action, and left the organization, which Teague considered a betrayal. He would set out a bounty on the Duke's head, declaring him an outlaw.

Meanwhile, Alistair Kuat remained devoted to Teague, living in great fear of him. Vergak noted that he had become sycophantic, while Kuat continued to deny such claims. Vergak remained the only one who dared to speak out against Teague, but he did not listen. Eventually, however, Teague made it clear that Vergak's "counsel" was not appreciated, warning him not to overstep his bounds.

Meanwhile, the Galactic Republic cracked down harder on the Shadow League. Some gangsters were arrested and they betrayed the organization in favour of a witness protection within the Republic. In response, Teague ordered a preliminary execution of several informants he thought were out to betray him - while some were clearly innocent. Vergak became abhorred with this, further straining his relationship with him.

Death[]
Shadow Broker! You're under arrest for crimes against the Galactic Republic and her citizens. Surrender now and you may present your defence in a judicial committee. Resist, and there will be violence!"
"Violence it is, then.

Devon Therall and Dorne Teague

Two years later, Teague met his lowest point. He began to see hallucinations and hear voices - partly because of his increased isolation. The voices told him that Teague had become a worthless bum, and that his "friends" were plotting against him. Teague believed this, becoming increasingly hostile to even his medical bots. Regardless, he only confided in Vergak - telling him that he was smelling dissent within his inner circle, ordering him to weed out traitors.

Vergak eventually met a crossroads. Teague continued to order him to kill potentially innocent soldiers, while he also noticed his former friend had become unpredictable, dangerous, and unhinged. As a result, Vergak began to conspire with the Republic Strategic Information Service - his former comrades - in secret. He met with a high-ranking officer within the SIS, revealing the location of the Shadow Fortress to them. Heart-broken but justifying his actions, the SIS temporarily placed Vergak under house arrest until the Shadow Broker had been captured - while promising him a secured place within their witness protection program for his services to the Republic.

Teague defends himself

Teague stands his ground during an SIS attack.

When Teague noticed Vergak's absence, he called for Alistair Kuat. He asked for Vergak, ordering Kuat to bring him back to the Citadel. Kuat, however, trembled in fear as he brought news from his spies - Vergak betrayed Teague to the Galactic Republic. Infuriated and saddened, Teague threw a chair at Kuat, ordering him to organize the Shadow League's remaining forces to defend the Shadow Fortress, while also sending assassins to Vergak. Shocked, Kuat claimed he was no military tactician - that it was the Duke who managed defences and logistics. Teague dismissed the claim, ordering him to do what he was told. Reluctantly, Kuat began to organize the Shadow Fortress' defence.

More than twenty attack squadrons, led by esteemed SIS agent Devon Therall, arrived at the Shadow Fortress, effortlessly infiltrating and navigating their way into the Shadow Fortress. The severely undermanned and ill-organized forces of the Shadow Broker were defeated as the SIS forces made their way into the Broker's Citadel. Kuat had since fled the scene, leaving Teague alone and to his fate. Teague began to don his Shadow Broker armor and picked up a large blaster cannon, ready to fire down upon his would-be captors.

When the SIS arrived at the Citadel, Teague began to fire his cannon, killing dozens of SIS agents despite being heavily wounded. The carnage continued until more SIS agents came in. Teague was able to hold them off as he activated the Shadow Fortress' self-destruction module in an effort to safeguard his contacts and connections and to annihilate the SIS forces. The timer began its countdown until a single female SIS agent managed to disarm Teague as the SIS was already making its retreat. The agent and Teague engaged in a hand-to-hand combat until she overpowered him, knocking off his helmet. They briefly stared face-to-face, finally coming to the horrible conclusion that the female agent was Eyna. Teague experienced mixed feelings of total shock, happiness, sadness, regret and anger as the two former lovers met again one last time. Before they could converse with each other, an explosion knocked Teague and Eyna back, splitting the Broker's Citadel in two. As Devon Therall dragged Eyna away, Teague called out to her, before a second explosion blasted Teague into outer space, killing him. The Shadow Fortress was destroyed, and the Shadow League defeated.

Legacy[]

At the height of his power, Teague was the most powerful gangster alive. His power and influence extending all the way from the Core Worlds to Wild Space, and even long after his death - many consider Teague to have been one of the greatest and most elusive criminals to have existed. As the founder of the Shadow League and the first Shadow Broker, Teague left behind a legacy that was kept alive even during the Clone Wars. The thousands of Shadow Brokers that came after him proved that - while Teague was a notably controversial and by all means not the best Shadow Broker to have lived - he was nonetheless a driving force in the Shadow League's continued significance within the criminal underworld.

While the Shadow League never regained the prowess or influence it had during Teague's time, it remained a notable player within criminal politics. During the Galactic Civil War, the Shadow Broker at the time tried to emulate Teague's manner of leadership as much as possible, like Teague dividing their power amongst three top lieutenants. Even three-thousand years after Teague's death, the identity of the Shadow Broker became a continued and much-talked about mystery in the galaxy. Many believed the Shadow Broker to be a group of people coordinating the Shadow League, while others claimed the Shadow Broker was not even real, but a myth constructed by the Shadow League to add to their mystery and infamy. Some even went as far as to claim the Shadow Broker was an immortal force-user with omniscient powers.

Eyna Therall, Teague's childhood sweetheart and the sole motivation for Teague to form the Shadow League, refused to mention the first Shadow Broker's true identity to anyone - not even to her husband, Devon Therall. Ironically, despite the legacy Teague left behind - almost no-one knew who he was, while many just mentioned him as the "Shadow Broker of the Cold War." This only added further to the Shadow Broker's grandiosity and mystery. According to official Republic records, Dorne Teague was killed by Myros Bekkal during the Coruscanti Gang War - and many believed this to be a fact. Even so, three-thousand years after his death, the true identity of the "Shadow Broker of the Cold War" was completely lost to history, with the knowledge of his identity known only to the future Shadow Brokers.

After Teague's death, the Shadow League fragmented. Vergak received a comfortable life within witness protection because of his efforts, though he remained regretful of his actions. The Duke quit the criminal life to live out his twilight years on a farm on Corellia, safe from the Republic's investigative eyes and the Slaver's Republic's retribution for Teague's victory over them forty years earlier. Alistair Kuat also attempted to lay low, but he was eventually arrested for his involvement with the Shadow League - being convicted of fraud and money laundering charges. He spent three years in prison until he was released on parole.

The Slaver's Republic's retribution was swift as they hunted down former members of the Shadow League. With the Shadow Broker's death, the Slaver's Republic regained their strengths and infamy, forever condemning the Shadow Broker and cursing his name in eternity.

Meanwhile, an ambitious slicer named Mako became intrigued with the Shadow Broker's stories and decided to attempt to restore the organization, claiming the Shadow Broker's vacant seat. She directly followed in Dorne Teague's footsteps, successfully banding together a small Shadow League by 3626 BBY. When she had enough power, she ordered the assassination of Vergak - a last loose end - and oversaw the reconstruction of the Shadow Fortress on the now-abandoned gas planet Vandin in the former territories of the Eternal Empire. Mako learnt from Teague's mistakes and managed to secure a prosperous future for a reformed Shadow League which would last for more than three-thousand years.

Personality and traits[]

Power, Vergak. That's why I did it. I am good at this. I enjoy this. It was never about Eyna. I never cared for anyone but myself. Within minutes I can cause a war on a galactic scale. I can shape history whenever I want. Tomorrow I can have the most powerful politician in the Republic stripped from his office if I so desire. People have never seen my face, have never heard my name, yet they fear me. I have legions of followers who have never met me, but who know well not to test my patience. I wish I could show you - let you feel the power, the influence that I wield. But that would mean giving up all that I have built, and I would rather jettison myself before I let that happen.
—Teague, revealing to Vergak his inherent true motivation for becoming a crime lord.

Teague's personality was defined by his ruthlessness, austerity, intelligence, but also his megalomania and cold, calculating, pragmatic demeanor. Teague was above all a trickster and a con artist, a skilled manipulator with the ability to carefully herd people as he wished. Teague was also calm and rarely expressed his emotions publicly, preferring to portray himself as an almost inhuman and cold man. However, this did not mean that Teague never felt any emotions; more that he did not care to outwardly express potential weaknesses of his that could be exploited.

Dorne black and white

Dorne Teague - the first Shadow Broker.

Teague was also pragmatic in that he was able to distinguish usefulness from worthlessness in a blink of an eye. He had an excellent judge of character, able to detect insubordination or treason from miles away. In addition, Teague was a charismatic negotiator, and a prolific actor. As the head of the Shadow League, Teague had constructed a certain image of himself as a tyrannical and powerful crime lord. However, Teague was a master of disguise; and had fabricated a plethora of alter egos that helped him conceal his true self. In this sense, it was often difficult to discern what Teague's true personality was; while he could be an emotionless, calculating Shadow Broker; he could also be a charming businessman or stern military general if the situation called for it.

Although he was largely business-oriented in his life, Teague's love for Eyna was always present, to the point that his main goal to find her remained unchanged throughout his entire life, despite the fact that Eyna was long gone and could just as well be dead. In this sense, Teague was also determined and goal-oriented. His determination often heavily outweighed his emotions, and his gray, pragmatic view of the world dictated most of his actions.

However, Teague was a noted megalomaniac; especially towards his later years. He believed himself superior to other "petty criminals", and had no trouble antagonizing or otherwise humiliating those he found inferior to his liking. In a sense, he was entitled to this type of extreme arrogance; as he was the most powerful crime lord of his age at the time; many feared him and he had an equal amount of enemies and allies.

In the early days of his career, Teague convinced himself that everything he did was to rescue Eyna. He had actually come to believe this, but Teague later had the revelation that the real reason he chose to become the Shadow Broker was because of the power, authority and influence he wielded, reveling and enjoying it. This is also the reason why - after believing that he would never find Eyna - he refused to give up his powers.

Towards his later years, Teague's mental state deteriorated. He had resorted himself to stay in the Shadow Fortress for most of his time as the Shadow Broker, and this isolated him deeply. The only person who could ever see his face was Vergak - his closest friend, and the only real conversations he had was with business associates at the far end of the galaxy. At his deepest point he was extremely wealthy but suffering from various forms of physical and mental ailments. The fact that he had not managed to find Eyna after nearly forty years shook him to his core, and although he had everything he ever wanted; wealth, power and influence; it tasted like ashes to him.

Eventually, Teague began to see enemies everywhere; to the point that he believed that everyone was out to betray him and take his wealth and power. In a sense, this became a self-fulfilling prophecy as Vergak noticed Teague's increased cruelty and felt guilt over becoming a criminal after years as an SIS agent, which prompted him to betray him.

For all his shortcomings, however, Teague was an inherently good man, perhaps corrupted by the world around him. His time with the SIS and later as head of the Shadow League exposed him to the defined cruelties people were capable of, in sharp contrast to the romanticised utopia he had long known while still living with his family.

Teague was a heavy drinker towards the end of his life; suffering from alcoholism as well as several other ailments; one of which rendered him partially unable to walk and reduced him to a pronounced limp. Teague disliked crowded places and was known to have panic attacks when in the company of many people. Some think this to be the reason why he had come to seclude himself towards his later years.

Relationships[]

Eyna Therall[]

Teague met Eyna Therall while they were still children on the planet Chandrila. Teague, a member of the wealthy Teague family, met Eyna while he was exploring Chandrila's farms. Normally, a Teague would not bother to visit the southern, less-wealthier farms, but Teague's adventurous spirit paved the way for his meeting with Eyna. When they first met, Teague was instantly smitten by her. He would frequently visit her whenever he had the chance, and they spent the majority of their childhoods together.

Teague and Eyna decided to elope together and marry when they would reach adulthood - a prospect they both looked forward to. However, this dream was brutally cut short when Chandrila was invaded by Sith, who kidnapped dozens of farmers in an effort rob the Republic of their most prosperous agriworld, functionally cutting off major foodstuffs from them, and Eyna was one of the captives. Teague decided to go after and rescue her.

It was partially because of Eyna why Teague went on to found the Shadow League, as he needed to form a powerful alliance that could rival the Slaver's Republic, an illicit government that supposedly held Eyna. Concurrently, the Shadow League's access to almost all information networks in the galaxy allowed Teague to find her location. However, when the War of the Confederacy ended and the Slaver's Republic defeated, Eyna was nowhere to be found, and Teague was convinced she was either dead or long gone from his reach.

It wasn't until nearly forty years later when Eyna and Teague were briefly reunited during the SIS' attack on the Shadow Fortress, in a last effort to bring down the Shadow Broker's empire for good. To Teague's terror, Eyna had joined the SIS and was working with them to unknowingly bring her former lover to justice. Their reunion was shortlived as Teague was killed when he self-destroyed the base.

Vergak[]

Teague met Vergak while they were teenagers. Teague had recently left Chandrila to find Eyna, and wound up in an orphanage at the behest of Myros Bekkal. Vergak and Teague became close friends over their shared motivation to save their orphanage from bankruptcy. Vergak noted an inner kindness to Teague, which resonated well to him.

Vergak and Teague both joined the Republic Strategic Information Service through Teague's connection with Bekkal. Vergak, after living a life of petty crime, wished for better prospects by joining the SIS, not knowing that Teague was merely using his own position to find Eyna. Eventually, however, Teague confided in Vergak about his intention to find Eyna, a mission Vergak was more than happy to help in.

During the Coruscanti Gang War and Bekkal's betrayal, Vergak and Teague shared their disillusionment from the organization, and together with Mors Altan went on to found the Shadow League in an effort to topple Bekkal from power. However, Vergak did not feel comfortable in entering organized crime - in sharp contrast to Teague - who seemed to revel in his new powers.

When Bekkal was defeated and Teague's influence and power grew, Vergak became increasingly disappointed with his friend's ruthless rise to power. He tried numerous times to convince him to ease on his ambitions, but Teague only declined. Vergak remained Teague's moral compass up until the latter went mad with power following the War of the Confederacy, ordering the deaths of numerous soldiers which he considered to be traitors. As a result, Vergak betrayed Teague to the SIS, causing his death.

Mors Altan[]

Teague first met Mors "the Duke" Altan while he infiltrated Black Sun during his years at Republic SIS. As Teague's direct superior in the organization, Mors proved vital in instructing Teague about criminal life, and continued to counsel him even after Teague had already formed the Shadow League. Their relationship was initially strained during the Shadow League's early days, as Teague had betrayed Altan a few years prior while he was an SIS informant. Nevertheless, they remained friends up until the Shadow League's fall, when Teague's insanity peaked and Altan was forced to abandon him.

Alistair Kuat[]

Teague and Kuat's relationship was strictly business for most of Teague's life. Alistair Kuat was a wealthy businessman and entrepreneur, and a vital ally to Teague's cause. Cracks occurred within their relation when Teague made it clear that Kuat was subservient to him, displaying torturous cruelty to further accentuate his point. As such, Kuat lived in great fear of Teague during the later years of his rule, though he found no trouble abandoning him when the SIS cracked down upon the Shadow Fortress.

Myros Bekkal[]

Although he was Teague's earliest rival, Myros Bekkal was essential in grooming Teague in becoming a powerful crime lord. It was Bekkal who taught Teague the most about the criminal world and how knowledge and information could be a powerful weapon. Ironically, Teague used these teachings against Bekkal - defeating him and leaving him to die at the hands of the SIS.

Behind the scenes[]

Dorne Teague is directly based on Walter White from AMC's Breaking Bad and Tony Montana from the 1983 crime film Scarface, with both instances revolving around a man who becomes a crime lord and whose criminal life ends in tragedy. Dorne Teague was also inspired by Daniel Plainview from the film There Will Be Blood.

The inspiration for the name "Dorne Teague" was taken from the A Song of Ice and Fire novels. Namely, Dorne - a region in Westeros, and House Teague - an extinct noble house.

Dorne Teague was voted Best Non-Force User in the Fifteenth Star Wars Fanon Awards.
