You crazy bugger! Do you have any idea how difficult, not to mention expensive, you would be to replace?!
—Jacen Wayland, offering a slightly-biased critique of his employee.
Devan Kei was a marine and served as commander of Wayland's Warhammer, the planetary combat arm of the Wayland's Wilders mercenary/privateer organization. He served with the Alliance to Restore the Republic's special operations forces, transferring from the Rebellion's standard armed forces following the destruction of Alderaan in 0 BBY. After the Battle of Endor turned the Galactic Civil War into a lengthy "mopping-up" campaign, Kei resigned his commission with the Rebels, hoping to enjoy a peaceful retirement. What he failed to plan for was that he would despise the boredom involved, as it allowed far too much free time to reflect on what he'd sacrificed for that peace, primarily the loss of his home and family to the Death Star. When Jacen Wayland was first setting up Wayland's Warhammer, he made a point of headhunting former Rebel officers to lead his cobbled-together group of mercenaries (that's basically what they'd done for the previous years, anyway), and snatched Kei out of retirement as soon as he agreed to take on the position. The one criticism Wayland ever had of Kei's performance was his propensity to strap on his personal combat armor (see picture above) and tour the front himself for a better sense of what's going on; it was never meant as a reproach of his tactics, but rather to remind the colonel that his exposure tended to cause his employer ulcers and nightmares.
