The Democratic Republic of the Monix System, abbreviated as the DRM and alternatively known simply as the Monix System Republic, was a government that controlled the Monix system in the galaxy's Outer Rim Territories.
It was established in the year 536 BBY, originally being known as the Democratic Republic of Monix and consisting solely of the planet Monix. It was completely independent from the Galactic Republic. The moons Moonix and Xinom II were later admitted, and the government was renamed as such.
Despite being relatively isolated, the Democratic Republic of the Monix System was able to achieve impressive levels of economic development, leading it to become the most powerful political force in the Adurn sector. Despite this, the DRM initially had rampant inequalities, with Humans on Monix controlling most of the government. This led to gradually increasing tensions, culminating in the beginning of a civil war and the formation of the Socialist Republic of the Monix System and the New Monixan Order. Both of the breakaway states were ultimately defeated, although the SRM's proposed reforms to reduce inequality were later implemented.
In 250 BBY, the Democratic Republic of the Monix System developed a plan to expand its influence by colonizing uninhabited systems nearby through the use of corporations. The Monixan colonialism, while initially successful, eventually resulted in conflict with governments in the Unknown Regions. As such, it was largely abandoned by the year 100 BBY, and the DRM kept to themselves, maintaining minimal outside relations. The DRM deliberately avoided involvement in the Clone Wars but suffered an economic depression due to the conflict.
The Galactic Empire, wanting to expand across the entire galaxy and recognizing the usefulness of the Monix system, decided to gain control over it. The DRM refused to make concessions to the Empire, although it was in a significantly weakened position as it had lost support amongst its own people. In 18 BBY, the Empire annexed the system and dissolved the DRM, nationalizing its resources and military.
During the Imperial Era, many inhabitants of the Monix system began to seek a reestablishment of their government upon seeing how the Empire treated them. This led to many in the system supporting the Alliance to Restore the Republic, which liberated the whole system in 4 ABY. A provisional government was then set up, which was later reorganized into the restored Democratic Republic of the Monix System. The restored DRM cooperated with the New Republic and achieved significant levels of prosperity not seen in several decades. In 34 ABY however, the DRM was one of the First Order's initial targets in their conquest of the galaxy, and the government was destroyed once more.
History[]
Formation and early history[]
The Democratic Republic of Monix was founded in 536 BBY, about 1,500 years after Monix was colonized and at the same time their capital known as Monixia was constructed. The government initially only consisted of Monix, with Moonix being an unrepresented colony. In 485 BBY, a law was passed to recognize Moonixans as full DRM citizens, and they became represented in the government.
The Xinomians of Xinom II agreed to join in 392 BBY, resulting in the name being changed to the Democratic Republic of the Monix System. The DRM became a fairly peaceful, safe place, and developed place in the otherwise lawless and dangerous Outer Rim. However, there was a massive socioeconomic and political issue, in that Monixan Humans held disproportionate power in the government and economy. Monix was far more developed and prosperous than Xinom II and Moonix, which were comparatively poor and exploited by Monix for economic gain. Despite all species being recognized as legally equal, it was clear that non-Humans were generally much less wealthy than Humans.
Civil War[]
In the year 300 BBY, anti-DRM political leaders established a breakaway state known as the Socialist Republic of the Monix System, which declared war on the DRM and sought to replace them. This marked the beginning of the Monix System Civil War. The SRM's support base mainly consisted of non-Humans (including Xinomians), Moonixans (mainly poor Humans), and some poor non-Humans on Monix. In 299 BBY, the New Monixan Order was formed, which had a fascist and humanocentrist ideology.
In the beginning stages of the war, the SRM acquired some territory on Monix, although they soon lost all of it to the DRM. However, the SRM took over the entirety of Moonix and Xinom II. This loss was a major blow to the inhabitants of Monix, who were deprived of many resources and even basic necessities such as food. However, since Monix had far greater industrial capabilities than Xinom II and Moonix combined, the DRM actually had an advantage of military superiority from the beginning.
The Democratic Republic of the Monix System first waged war against the New Monixan Order, defeating them in 296 BBY and thus regaining control over all of Monix. The DRM then turned their attention towards retaking Xinom II and Moonix. The SRM's many atrocities during the war led to many of its initial supporters switching sides. This, combined with eventual support from the Galactic Republic and Jedi Order, cemented the DRM's position as the victor of the war. The Monix System Civil War came to an end in 290 BBY with the total total defeat of the Socialist Republic of the Monix System.
Progressive Era[]
Although the Socialist Republic of the Monix System was recognized for their heinous methods, their ultimate goals and motivations gained attention within the DRM. Over the decades following the war, the Democratic Republic of the Monix System passed countless laws to implement reforms aimed at reducing the disparities. Moonix and Xinom II were developed significantly, achieving a standard of living much closer to that of Monix. Non-Humans also became more wealthy, though this did not come at the expense of Humans, and they gained more power within every level of the DRM.
Colonial Era[]
In 250 BBY, the Democratic Republic of the Monix System developed a comprehensive plan to colonize surrounding areas of space, which was very sparsely settled. The official explanation was that it would bring civilization to the empty parts of space, which would benefit the Monix system and eventually allow the colonized systems to become well-developed. A more pessimistic interpretation of this was that the DRM's leaders just wanted more power and influence. Either way, the plan gained significant public support.
The DRM did not directly colonize any systems themselves, but rather used corporations as proxies to do so. Recognizing the mistakes of prior instances of colonialism, the DRM made efforts to make the process more humane: no systems with native sentient species could be colonized, and settlers on colonies had to be ensured a decent standard of living. Corporations were regulated to abide by these rules, and would be fined or broken up if they violated the terms.
Over the next century, several corporations based in the Monix system established colonies across 100 systems. This brought economic benefits to the Monix system and also opened up previously unexplored areas of space to civilization. However, as the corporations went further from the Monix system and into the Unknown Regions, they came across unforeseen threats—hostile governments such as the Zavakian Empire. In 120 BBY, the Zavakian Empire launched coordinated attacks against several colonized systems, killing hundreds of thousands. This led to dramatically reduced public support, and the DRM decided to end the colonial policy. By 100 BBY, most Monixan colonist corporations went defunct; the remaining ones held control over only a few colonies and were banned from establishing new ones.
Late Republic Era[]
During the Clone Wars, the Galactic Republic and Confederacy of Independent Systems sent representatives on a mission to Monix in hopes of persuading them to join their respective sides. Both the Republic and CIS believed the DRM to be a potential ally due to its resources being beneficial for a war effort. However, the Democratic Republic of the Monix System remained committed towards maintaining neutrality. As such, the representatives were forced out, and the DRM cut off most commerce with both sides so that they supported neither.
This had a consequence however, as the Monix system's economy had become more closely tied to the galactic economy in recent years. As a result, the Monix system went through a severe economic depression, one on a level not seen since the civil war.
Dissolution[]
The formation of the Galactic Empire posed a threat immediately recognized by key leaders of the Democratic Republic of the Monix System. The Empire's intentions to take over the whole known galaxy were made very clear, and the Monix system was among its first targets due to it being completely independent yet relatively powerful. This situation was greatly worsened by the fact that government support declined with the public due to the poor economic situation in the Monix system. As such, many turned their attention to the Empire, hoping it could offer them more prosperity.
The Empire was quick to take advantage of this, and began to exert control over the Monix system. Some in the DRM tried to resist, but it was ultimately futile because so many people were supporting the Empire. In 18 BBY, the President of the Democratic Republic of the Monix System was forced into an agreement that dissolved the DRM and allowed for the peaceful annexation of the Monix system by the Empire.
During the period of Imperial rule, many industries of the Monix system were nationalized to support the Imperial Military. Those who initially supported the Empire's takeover of the Monix system began to question it, while others remained devoted to the Empire no matter what. The Empire's policies led to an increase in poverty and environmental damage and a decrease in economic development and standards of living.
Many who once lived under the Democratic Republic of the Monix System wanted it back, and so pro-Rebel Alliance sentiment began to build up during the Galactic Civil War. In 4 ABY, shortly after the Battle of Endor, the Rebel Alliance liberated Monix from the Empire in a large and costly battle. The rest of the system was liberated shortly after. A provisional government was established, which had intentions to reestablish the DRM.
Restoration[]
In 5 ABY, at the end of the Galactic Civil War, the Democratic Republic of the Monix System was officially reestablished. While maintaining good relations with the New Republic, the restored DRM proudly accepted independence once more. The DRM managed to achieve levels of growth not seen in several decades.
In 34 ABY, the Monix system was attacked by the First Order following the Hosnian Cataclysm. However, the Democratic Republic of the Monix System was unwilling to give up without a fight, so the Battle of Monix ensued. The battle ended disastrously for the DRM, because Urbix, the third-largest city on Monix, was destroyed by orbital bombardment. The DRM was then dissolved again and a First Order occupation began. An uprising later occurred after the Resistance victory at the Battle of Exegol in the Monix system, ending the First Order occupation.
Organization[]
Government[]
The government of the Democratic Republic of the Monix System was headquartered in the city of Monixia. The head of state of the Democratic Republic System was the President. The President was elected by popular vote and served a six-year term; re-elections were not allowed. The legislative branch was the Monix System Senate, which had one representative from each province. Provinces were designed to contain a population of about two million.
Military[]
The DRM's military was the Monix System Defense Force. The MDF was tasked with protecting the system from external threats and also had a role in internal security. It was composed of an all-volunteer force (conscription was used only during the civil war) and operated plenty of starships and ground vehicles. Considering the Monix system's population, the MDF was relatively large.
Economy[]
The Democratic Republic of the Monix System had a highly developed market-based economy. The system's abundant natural resources, combined with its industrial capabilities, allowed for large-scale production of manufactured goods. Exports relied on the Monix Trade Route, a hyperspace lane that connected the system to other planets. The Republic of Monix used Monixan credits as their currency. One Monixan credit was equivalent to about two Republic credits.
The DRM had many corporations based within its borders. These corporations played a key role in economic development, but they were regulated by the government to ensure fair business practices. The MonX Corporation was the largest corporate entity in the Democratic Republic of the Monix System and was a major component of the DRM's economy.
Society and culture[]
The most common species in the Democratic Republic of the Monix System were Humans, but the Xinomians, the only sentient species native to the Monix system, were also common. There were many other species that immigrated from various places throughout the galaxy, motivated by the search of a better life. Since its establishment, the DRM had constitutional laws that made all individuals equal under the law, regardless of species. Despite this, there were significant inequalities between Humans and non-Humans until the aftermath of the civil war.
The official language was Galactic Basic Standard.
The DRM observed several annual holidays that were exclusive to the system. Monixfest was once such holiday; it occurred every Monixan year, and celebrated joy, giving, and gratitude.
Astrography[]
The DRM only had direct control over the Monix system, located in the Adurn sector on the edge of the Outer Rim Territories. The Monix system was located in a sparsely inhabited area of space, and as a result, the DRM was the only notable power in its local area. To the galactic south of the Monix system was Wild Space, and to the west was the Unknown Regions. The Monix system consisted of three habitable astronomical objects, including one planet and two moons. Monix was a cold, mountainous planet that was easily the most prominent in the system. It had a similarly-named moon, Moonix, which was primarily agrarian, having much of the food supply and the smallest population. Xinom II, the moon of a gas giant, was an oceanic moon.
