Fear. Fear attracts the fearful… the strong… the weak… the innocent… the corrupt. Fear. Fear is my ally.
—Darth Maul
Darth Maul is a Dathomirian Zabrak male Sith Lord who was born during the final years of the Galactic Republic. Originating from Dathomir as part of the Nightbrother clan, he was known simply as Maul and was handed over to the Dark Lord of the Sith, Sidious, by Mother Talzin as an infant. Afterwards, Maul was riased by Sidious and was instructed in the dark side of the force and was raised to become a powerful Sith Lord and was indocrinated into the Sith Order at a very young age and was trained on the dark, firey world of Mustafar in the Outer Rim Territories away from any outside interference. Trained in the arts of the dark side and lightsaber combat, Maul was quickly trained and became a master at various forms of lightsaber combat during his training years as a young and troubled boy. While a skilled warrior and promising to, Maul was trained as a Sith assassin rather than as an apprentice as he was technically a violation of the Rule of Two because Sidious was the apprentice of Darth Plagueis who was still alive at the time of his training.
After Sidious slayed Plagueis, Maul was promoted and became an official Sith apprentice, thus fufilling the Rule of Two. In 32 BBY, Maul was sent to Naboo to assist in the Trade Federation occupation of the planet, a crisis that was engineered by his master Palpatine who was masquerading as a Senator from Naboo and the future Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic. During the crisis, Maul was sent to Tatooine to spy on Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn and after his encursion with the latter, his duel was reported to the Jedi Council who were shocked as they previosuly believed the Sith to have been extinct. He would appear again later on Naboo during the ground assault to retake the planet where he engaged the two Jedi Knights in lightsaber combat. During the fight, he proved himself to be a strong warrior and even killed Qui-Gon Jinn and believed that he could easily slay Obi-Wan in his rage. Maul however, was wrong and an enraged Obi-Wan regained his concentration with the force and cut Maul in half and sent him flying downwards into the nearby pit where he was presumed dead.
After the duel, Maul managed to survive but fell into absolute rage and pain having barely survived being cut in half and developed a deep and enternal animosity towards Obi-Wan vowing to one day kill him. Maul eventually made it to the planet of Lotho Minor where he got six cybernetic legs and fell into insantiy to the point where Morley sent sacrifices to him in exchange for Maul's survival and Morley to feed off of the corpses. In 20 BBY, Mother Talzin sent Savage Opress to find Maul and he managed to locate his brother and brought him back to Dathomir where Talzin healed Maul with her dark magic, restored his sanity, and sent Maul down his dark path towards revenge. During the later years of the Clone Wars, Maul took advantage of the galaxy at war to wreak havoc across the Outer Rim as he assembled a criminal empire comprised of the Death Watch, Pyke Syndicate, the Black Sun, and even the Hutt Cartel for a brief moment and rained fire upon the helpless citizens of the Outer Rim and all reaches of the galaxy in underworld sphere of influence. With his new alliance of criminals and gangsters, Maul merged them all together and formed the Shadow Collective which became his own personal army and tool for his crusade against the Jedi and quest for revenge. This quest eventually lead him to the downfall of the New Mandalorian government on Mandalore and the execution of Dutchess Satine as revenge for what Obi-Wan did to Maul twelve years prior. Maul's crusade however, would be cut short as the rogue Zabrak Sith attracted the attention of his former master Sidious who traveled to Mandalore where he killed Savage, captured Maul, and left Mandalore in a state of panic.
Months after his capture, Maul was stuck in a Separatist prison before his Death Watch allies broke him out and he rejoined them and his Shadow Collective which still survived. Maul continued to get revenge on Sidious and even traveled back to Dathomir to seek the guidence and support from Mother Talzin, but this attracted Sidious once again who came in with a Separatist invasion fleet where his former master killed Talzin and destroyed both the Nightsisters and the Shadow Collective during the invasion of the planet. With his criminal empire gone and the Nightbrothers nearly gone, Maul fled back to Mandalore and prepared to make his last stand knowing that either Sidious or the Republic would come to dispose him and his prediction eventually came and Maul faced the young Torguta Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, where she nearly defeated him until Order 66 was executed causing Ahsoka to flee underground and Maul to be captured. The Dathomirian Zabrak was then captured by the newly formed Galactic Empire and was taken into Imperial custody. There, he was transfered over to the citadel and was once more a prisoner of his former master who frequently showed off his new apprentice, Darth Vader.
