Darth Kalast was a Sith Lord who lived around 17,568 BBY and led the Holy Sith Empire. That year, he began the Early Sith War by attacking the Galactic Republic after building up forces in the unexplored fringes of the Outer Rim Territories. Noted to be powerful and cunning by the Jedi Order, the Sith managed to remain elusive during the conflict, though was known to occasionally come out and aid his forces in battle. Along with the Republic, he fought the Zelin splinter government, a faction created by a former Republic Navy admiral, Vedij Zelin. Finally, in 17,561 BBY, he was slain by a team of Jedi Masters.
He was one of the earliest Sith Lords in galactic history, and was remembered often as the "red-armored Sith Lord" by most historical accounts, but by the Order of the Sith Lords Kalast was known by his proper name. Many years after his death, Sith viewed him as a hero, and he was often thought of as the founder of the Sith Empire, forming his in 17,576 BBY. He was also known to be a skilled lightsaber duelist, and was called a Sith "founding father" thousands of years after his death by Darth Sidious. He was famous for his large red armor, which disappeared after he was killed. Afterwards, many fabrications were made and sold, claiming to be the real one.

Few individuals have met Kalast personally, though he was described by some, such as his second in command, Darth Vykar, to be very ambitious. He believed the Sith species was superior to all others, and especially hated Jedi. Kalast was known to be a skilled tactician and cunning leader, as well as a dangerous lightsaber duelist.
