Darth was a precursor to the full name given to a successful Sith Apprentice upon their ascension to the title of Sith Lord. Unlike claiming to be a Dark Lord of the Sith or a Sith Lord, Darth was not a title, but instead, was used as the beginning of a name. Usually, the second part of the name would have some sort of meaning behind it and why it was given to a certain Sith individual. The origins of the word "Darth" is actually from the ancient Sith language of Sithese itself, and meant "One who commands the Bogan with supreme power and authority." To be considered a Darth, one had to successfully become a Sith Lord in the eyes of a superior, usually a Dark Lord of the Sith. It is possible that some considered Darth a title, rather than part of a name, although any who carried the title had their full name recognized, as in "Darth Vader", for example.
