The Coruscanti Army was a Republic military force from c. 1800 BBY to 1000 BBY, when it was disbanded during the Ruusan Reformation. At its height, the Coruscanti Army boasted more than 1,600,000 soldiers conscripted on Coruscant. While most of the Coruscanti Army consisted of Coruscanti citizens, some officers were of Corellian and Alderaanian background. The Supreme Chancellor was the Commander-in-Chief of the Coruscanti Army, and the Marshal of Coruscant oversaw interstellar operations. The Civil General, the Domestic General, Frontier Generals, Post Generals, and Admirals made up the Coruscanti Wartime Committee of Appointed High Generals (or simply the Wartime Committee), whose chairman was the Marshal and was represented in the Galactic Senate by the Civil General. The Wartime Committee developed into the modern era Militarist Party.
Apart from its standard contingents which defended Republic territories and pacified rebellions, the Coruscanti Army also had an expeditionary force that operated in semi-autonomous Republic colonies and occasionally outside of the Republic's domain. The Coruscanti expeditionary force was considered the predecessor to the modern era Republic Judicial Forces.
Members of the Jedi Order assisted the Coruscanti Army in many wars, though the two organizations were considered separate entities with individual command structures at the time.
Equipment[]
Throughout its existence, the Coruscanti Army supplied its soldiers with vibroswords, vibrospears, firearms, and hand grenades.
Standard Coruscanti infantrymen had grey-colored uniforms that were similar in design to the uniforms used by officers within the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. Expeditionary soldiers had blue uniforms with ornate decorations.
Command structure[]
- The Marshal General of Coruscant, also known simply as the Marshal, who was elected by the Coruscanti Wartime Committee, held the same military authority as the Supreme Chancellor and oversaw Wartime Committee gatherings.
- The Civil General, sometimes known as the Custodian of the Republic or the Judiciary General, was the Wartime Committee's representative in the Galactic Senate. Most who were elected to this position often previously served as the Domestic General. The Civil General typically also oversaw a national police force that protected government buildings across Coruscant. Modern incarnations of the Senate Guard traced their roots back to one such police force.
- The Domestic General was an elected general that oversaw social services and sometimes law enforcement on Coruscant. For most of the CA's history, the Domestic General served as the Marshal's adviser and worked closely with the Civil General. The Domestic General also maintained a network of agents that maintained intelligence regarding interstellar politics, economy, and culture.
- Admiral-Generals (later simply known as admirals) oversaw the Coruscanti Army's fleet of warships, colony ships, and sometimes supply ships
- Frontier Generals oversaw the Coruscanti Army's expeditionary forces and commanded garrisons in colonies of Republic worlds. Frontier Generals held the same military authority as Post Generals and were also authorized to command warships to escort supply fleets.
- Post Generals oversaw Coruscanti Army outposts and governed occupied territories. In wartime, Post Generals commanded regiments of up to 1,500 soldiers. Each Post General's regiment was divided into two battalions of 600 soldiers, each led by Line Generals, and one "courier company" of 300 soldiers, which was responsible for the transportation of supplies, munitions, and intelligence and was under the command of a Courier General. Post General was the predecessor to the "colonel" rank found in modern militaries.
- Courier Generals oversaw the Coruscanti Army's network of messengers and sometimes commanded supply fleets.
- Line Generals oversaw outposts on active warzones and battalions of up to 600 soldiers. Each Line General's battalion was divided into three companies, each led by a captain. Line General was the predecessor to the "lieutenant colonel" rank found in modern militaries.
- Captains oversaw companies of up to 200 soldiers under the command of designated Line Generals. In occupied territories and colonies, a captain may also serve as the overseer of a settlement's law enforcement.
- Adjutants oversaw platoons of up to forty soldiers. Adjutant was the predecessor to the "lieutenant/leftenant" rank found in modern militaries.
- Sergeants-at-Arms oversaw squads of up to twelve soldiers. The term Sergeant-at-Arms remained in use into the modern era, though the simple term "sergeant" became more prevalent. The rank derived from "serjant", which was used in numerous different ancient armies.
- Lancepesades oversaw units of three to eight soldiers and were in charge of small patrols throughout occupied territories. Lancepesade was the predecessor to the "corporal" rank found in modern militaries.
