I'm a crusader against those who would harm my people.
—Corso Marek

Corso Marek, affectionately known as Cory, was a Force-sensitive Mandalorian who fought the Kedd'ej Covenant in a destructive war waged on the Mandalorian people.
Hailing from the world of Telos IV, the son of planetary governor Aeron Marek and Riyo, and twin brother of Tiya, Corso was often considered the black sheep of the family due to his timid nature, a trait deemed unworthy of the Marek name. Growing up with an abusive father and twin sister, Marek eventually found himself in trouble on Ord Sedra where he came in contact with a faction of Mandalorians, led by Jai'ga Shan and Rohan Dyre.
Under the guidance of Shan and Dyre, Marek became Mandalorian and a force to be reckoned with; a natural soldier with uncompromising loyalty to his fellow Mandalorians and ferocity on the battlefield against the Kedd'ej Covenant, eventually gaining him the favor of his people and being nominated to take the mantle of Mandalore, leader of the Mandalorian people, after the death of Ran Dyre.
Claiming the moniker Mandalore the Crusader (Te Akaan Mand'alor, in Mando'a), he vowed to lead his people to victory against those who would try and purge the Mandalorians.

Biography

Early life (201 ABY—222 ABY)

Born on Telos IV around 200 ABY, Corso grew up as a member of the respected Marek family along with his twin sister Tiya Marek, the son of Aeron Marek, an abusive man who served as Telosian governor and the Tyran Riyo, who disappeared sometime after their birth. Throughout his early years he was constantly belittled by his father and other members of his family who considered him the "black sheep" because of his meek nature, though he was often defended by his sister, thus never gaining any confidence in himself.
At some point prior to 219 ABY he managed to get a job working for the Telos Security Force and received basic firearms training.[1]

In 219 ABY, Corso returned home from working for the TSF he caught Aeron, while under the influence of spice, abusing Tiya, much to his chagrin. Hesitantly, he threatened his father with his sidearm, but before he could do anything Aeron tackled him and beat Corso within an inch of his life, leaving him hospitalized. Aeron reported it as a robbery gone wrong to the investigating authorities.

Wandering the stars and cast away

Prior to 222 ABY Corso eventually left his father's home and the TSF to work as a freighter pilot for Azalus Industries, having waited for Tiya to leave for college in the capital of Thani. Scarred with memories of his childhood he would find himself in cantinas during his off-time, drowning away his 'miserable existence'. One day in the year 222 ABY he was fired from his job piloting for Azalus Industries, after a shipment was stolen while he was disembarked, due to his co-pilot Jay's negligence. Disgruntled, but soft-spoken, Corso begrudgingly accepted his severance pay and his former co-pilot gave him ride to Ord Sedra.

He later regretted accepting the credits and gambled in a cantina owned by Garra Jallissii Abai, betting on a shockboxing match, hoping to make some credits off the Feeorin fighter Zek. Betting more than he had, he borrowed five thousand credits from the Nautolan Makan, Corso lost and was threatened with torture and death if he didn't pay. After a brief scuffle with Makan and his thugs, Corso managed to flee the establishment.

A chance to live

Shortly after escaping the thug and his crew, Corso rested in an alley blocks away from the cantina until he witnessed a firefight occurring a street over. Terrified, he only watched at first, however when Makan and his thugs caught up to him he decided to take his chance and crossed the street hoping to not get hit. Halfway across a grenade landed near him but he was saved by one of the fighters, Rohan Dyre, a Mandalorian soldier. After the group of thugs joined in on the shooting, Dyre put a blaster in Corso's hand, and though he was hesitant before the skirmish was over he was able to kill one of the thugs, albeit unintentionally.

When the smoke settled he was berated for his hesitation and cowardice by Dyre and few others, namely the Trandoshan Inyam, but was defended by the Zeltron Mandalorian Jai'ga Shan and her friend Sariah Gallé, who in turn offered for him to come with them; he accepted, not wanting to be around if Garra decided to have him killed for his brief part in the destruction of the town and deaths of his employees.
The Mandalorians collected what they could in both weaponry and armor from the fallen and left the planet, heading to Zanbar.

Joining the Mandalorians

Jai'ga Shan: “If you stay, we can help you, but if you stay... you fight.
Corso Marek: “Then let's fight.
Sariah Gallé: “Welcome to the Mandalorians, Corso.
— Jai'ga Shan, Corso Marek and Sariah Gallé discuss Corso's next course of action[src]

Over the course of the next few months, Corso was taught what it meant to be Mandalorian through understanding the Resol'nare—the Six Actions that guided everyday life for a Mandalorian—survival training, combat training, and speaking the Mandalorian language.[1]

When the time came for his substitute verd'goten's—a Mandalorian rite of passage—final test; he and a group of other initiates were tasked to hunt down and kill a mutated acklay nicknamed "Balac" in the marsh, a creature that had already killed half a dozen Mandalorians.[1] The test was failed when Corso's team was slaughtered by the creature and he was almost dismissed as a Mandalorian by Rohan Dyre when it was discovered he only survived due to his cowardice as he ran away. Corso pleaded not to be turned away and with Shan's blessing, he ventured out once more, locating the predator, and subsequently killed it. He returned with its head, was congratulated and a small celebration was held later that night, welcoming their new brother, and remembering those who were who did not survive.[1]

During the celebratory feast Jai'ga asked to speak with him, the pair traveled in the nearby woods and hunted an anooba that had stolen her beskad which belonged to her father. When the pair located the canine, it was in pain, the blade of the beskad was broken and lodged within its gullet; Corso decided to euthanize it. With the blade recovered, Jai'ga thanked him, but admitted to not needing his help, she just wanted his company and asked him to report to her quarters in an hour. When he arrived, the pair spent the night together.
The next morning, Corso made breakfast for her and was later awarded a suit of Mandalorian armor—once belonging to a proud Mandalorian warrior.[1]

A few months after the campaign on Sedarr, Corso again met his former co-pilot Jay and his friends on Nar Shaddaa where he won the starship, Zenith from Jay in a game of pazaak, renaming it the Crusader.[3]

Alliance with an empire

Admonitor

Marek was present for the conclave aboard the Soontir Fel II

In the waning months 224 ABY, Corso was among the warriors that attended a gathering aboard an Imperium dreadnought to discuss a potential alliance and mutual benefits with aiding the Fel Imperium in their growing conflict with the its sister Imperial body, the Fel Empire and to an extent the ruling Galactic Federation Triumvirate. An agreement was reached, but before a treaty could be drafted, infiltrators disrupted the conclave, having sabotaged the vessel and began killing those aboard. Corso quickly made his way to the delegation chamber, carving a path with a squad made up of stormtroopers and Mandalorians through the infiltrators. They killed the invaders and successfully proved the Mandalorians effectiveness, thus bringing the treaty to a close.

After forming the alliance with the Imperium and being promoted to Rally Master for his actions, Corso spent a few days on the Imperium world Dekor at a cantina called The Pit where fought and bested the Wookiee duelist Mallatochuk and met a Kiffar woman named Resa Kas and slept with her, inadvertently resulting in her pregnancy with a daughter, whom Corso did not meet for several years.[7]

Relics of the past

Let me ask you this: we're warriors, one of the greatest fighting forces in galactic history. We nearly destroyed the Republic, we've been toe-to-toe with Jedi with nothing more than blasters and vibroswords, and have killed them by the thousands. Imagine us—Mandalorians—utilizing the same substance that make the Jedi what they are and twist it to our favor. What do you get?"
"Mandalorian Knights.

Aurek and Corso[src]

In 226 ABY while on a mission to oversee the completion of a mining operation in the Chaykin sector, Corso received a distress signal from the Vendaxa system and pursued it aboard the Crusader, alongside his astromech droid R9-E4. When he arrived, he was met hostile wildlife and after cleaving a path to the signal he was greeted by sentries of the remnants of an ancient order of Force-wielding Mandalorians who called themselves the Mandalorian Knights, after the failed movement started by Dorjander Kace.[4]

Mando200

Mandalore the Crusader in combat

By mid-230 ABY, Corso became somewhat revered by his fellow New Mandalorian Crusaders after being instrumental in the defeat of the Kedd'ej in numerous battles, though he failed to do so in what became known as the Fall of Marrakesh, which claimed the lives of many Mandalorians including that of his beloved Jai'ga and Ran Dyre, he did further impress his fellow Mandalorians with his tenacity and willingness to risk his life in order to save his comrades, earning him the nickname Jare—meaning suicidal in Mando'a.

After Ran Dyre died in battle, the Marshals' Council declared that Corso take up the mantle of Mandalore and lead them. Although initially reluctant, he took up the moniker of "Mandalore the Crusader", promising the lead them in crusades on those who would try and destroy them, namely the Kedd'ej Covenant.[8]

Becoming a father

Five months after being declared the new Mandalore, at the behest of the Marshals' Council, he and Sariah Gallé met with dignitaries of the Fel Imperium in the Roan City on Dekor to further correlate their mutual interests in the war effort. Shortly after, the pair were still on the planet when the marriage of Arren Banteri was announced and Sariah managed to convince Corso to take the night off. Nost of the night was spent in cantinas, drinking in celebration of the new Imperial couple.

Return to Telos

In 231.5 ABY, Corso decided to visit Telos IV after hearing that his father had fallen ill from his sister Tiya whom he had not seen in years. Arriving on Telos he was met with initial skepticism and shock due to his Mandalorian entourage—including Sariah Gallé and Aayla Vao, and his family having thought he was dead. Upon seeing his father, Aeron—a shell of his former self—Corso struggled with the decision on whether to forgive him or not.[2] Before he passed, Aeron revealed what happened to his mother and that she was still alive.[2]

He left soon after his father passed, bringing along his sister and leaving a message for the remainder of his family. He established Clan Marek and anyone who was willing was able to join them.[2]

Personality and traits

Corso was born an outsider—an aruetii, but he became the best of us.
—A Mandalorian

Originally a passive and soft-spoken individual, he was looked down upon by most of his family for being soft, only really being accepted by his sister Tiya. It wasn't until he met Jai'ga Shan and joined the New Mandalorian Crusaders that he gained confidence in himself and his newly developed abilities, which garnered him the respect and admiration of his fellow Mandalorians and eventually his kin.

He was a virtually selfless and loyal warrior, willing to risk his life to save wounded and civilians as demonstrated during the Fall of Marrakesh, actions he was both reprimanded and praised for, earning him the nickname Jare—a Mandalorian term meaning suicidally reckless in Mando'a. Marek was also a vengeful man, vowing that he would destroy the Kedd'ej Covenant for all the Mandalorian deaths they caused.

Corso first met Jai'ga Shan on Ord Sedra and the pair were immediaely smiten with each other, but it wasn't until Corso decided to join the Mandalorians that began to develop a an off/on relationship that would last throughout the Kedd'ej War, eventually culminating in Corso's thought of proposal and starting a family with her to solidify heir relaionship, but he opted to wait until the upcoming battle was over. His hopes, however, were dashed with her death at the Fall of Marrakesh.

Resa Kas

During one of his breaks away from Jai'ga, he met the owner of The Den, Kiffar Resa Kas while on Dekor shortly after the attack on the Imperium conclave. They met after Corso interrupted a bar fight between two patrons and began participating in the dueling ring. Impressed by his fight with the Wookiee Mallatochuk, she offered him and his entourage a round of free drinks and later after a night of drunken flirting, the pair slept together, an act that unbeknownst to Corso would produce a child Resa would name Sabine.

Corso would meet Resa again years later, after being elected Mandalore, where she introduced him to his daughter.

The initial meeting between Corso and Sariah was a one-off greeting followed by him joining the Mandalorians on their journey to Zanbar, but she later admitted to Aayla Vao that she found him to be a "handsome man with eyes of a laigrek". Having little interaction during his training as a Mandalorian, it wasn't until the assault on the conclave that she managed to witness and be impressed by his skills as a warrior and a leader, joining his makeshift squad of Mandalorians and Imperials who repelled the infiltrators. She continued to fight by his side through the years and even comforted him after the Fall of Marrakesh when he discovered Jai'ga Shan was killed.
