The Corellian Jetball League was a professional jetball league based in the Corellian System. It had a reputation for being fiercely competitive, and was one of the elite jetball leagues in the galaxy. It was founded in 42 BBY, and featured some of the galaxy's most famous teams, including AC Coronet and the Rellidir Pilots.

History[]

The league was created in 42 BBY, during the time when jetball was growing in popularity. At its inception, the league was comprised of eight teams, AC Coronet, the Corellia Dragons, the Kor Vella Knights, the Corellia Pirates, JC Tralus, JC Talus, Dearic SC, and the Rellidir Pilots. These teams would be referred to as the "Original Eight." The league then added two expansion teams in 38 BBY, and another two in 37 BBY. Also, after adding an additional expansion team in 36 BBY, the CJL incorporated three independent teams, who had previously been unaffiliated to any organized league. Later on, the league would add teams in 10 BBY and 1 ABY, bringing the number of teams in the league to 18.

From early on in its history, the Corellian Jetball League was immensely successful. Corellians were among the most passionate jetball fans in the galaxy, and they embraced the league from day one. From a competitive standpoint, the league was believed by many to be the best in the galaxy, being seriously rivaled only by Coruscant's League 1.

Format and Structure[]

Unlike many other jetball leagues in the galaxy, the CJL was not directly controlled by its system's jetball federation. While the league was affiliated with the Corellian Jetball Federation and was subject to its regulations, it was technically a separate entity.

In terms of competitive format, the league season originally spanned 21 games, as each of the eight teams played each other three times. For the league's first two seasons, the team that finnished the year with the best record was crowned league champion, with no postseason being played. This would change in 40 BBY, as a championship game was implemented which would see the first and second place teams playing a single game to determine the league champion.

In 36 BBY, when the league was comprised of 16 teams, the format was changed to each team playing each other twice during the regular season. Two years the later, the postseason would be expanded to include four teams in the playoffs, instead of only two. This allowed for semifinal games to be played, with the first place team playing the fourth, and the second playing the third, with the two winners going to the championship game.

Also, in 20 BBY, the Corellian Jetball Federation sanctioned a second-tier competition known as the 5 Worlds Jetball League, implementing a system of relegation and promotion. From that point on, the bottom two teams in the Corellian Jetball League at the end of each season would be demoted to the 5 Worlds League for the following year. To take their places, the top two teams in the 5WJL would be promoted to the top-tier league.

In terms of interplanetary competitions, the Corellian Jetball League was allowed to send its top four teams to the CJA Champions League every year, the maximum amount for an individual league. In addition, the CJL's fifth and sixth placed teams annually qualified for the CJA Sun Cup.
