We were the original members of the Union, we are the Union. We should work together with the Union to find a suitable agreement.
—A Compromiser
The Compromisers were a political faction of the Western States Confederation, a military alliance of Conservative nations from the Western hemisphere of Earth formed from the Traditionalist Faction, which was nominally a faction of the Senate of the Union of Earth States, although in reality was an independent bloc which rejected the authority of the Union.
The Western States Confederacy was founded following a meeting by Jean-Louis Picard, the president of the Federal Republic of Erusea, with other members of the Traditionalist Faction in response to the openly hostile and Federalist acts of Richard Williams, of the Federalist Faction, who had been elected Union President in 24 BBY.
The members of the Traditionalist Faction were the original founding members of the Union, and opposed Williams' attempts to turn the Union into a centralised Federal republic, preferring the Union remain a loose alliance of states.
Picard believed that Richard Williams would force all power into a centralised federalist republic, with himself and the corrupt senators who served him in charge, and as such decided to militarise the Traditionalist Faction to prepare for conflict with what he described as "an Earth Federal Army marching through our streets".
Following the founding of the Western States Confederation in 23 BBY two factions emerged within it, the "Separatists", who opposed the Union entirely, and sought to see the Confederation withdraw and become an independent nation, and the Compromisers, which sought to find a compromise with Richard Williams and remain part of the Union.
Whilst the Compromisers were initially popular they soon began losing public support to the Separatists, especially during the Leasath Civil War of mid 23 BBY-late 22 BBY, in which the Confederacy helped Supreme General Diego Navarro, commander of the Nationalists, defeat the Union-backed Unionists.
Angered by this act, believing it to be treason, Richard Williams pushed through the Western States Expulsion Act following the Union's defeat in Leasath, the result of this was the senators of the nations of the Western States Confederation were expelled from the Union Senate, greatly angered by this the people began calling for secession, membership and support of the Compromisers almost entirely vanished seemingly overnight.
The last remnant of the Compromisers died out after Jane Zarkan announced the secession of her nation on the 1st day of 21 BBY, and the subsequent founding of the Confederate States of Earth, following which nearly all of the remaining Compromisers abandoned their faction and compromising views and fully supported their new nation, the Separatists' dream of an independent Conservative confederacy had been realised.
The Compromisers, they have noble goals and intentions, but do not seem to realise that the Union cannot be fixed, and we cannot live peacefully within it whilst Richard Williams is in charge, for he has made enemies of us! Secession is the only way!
