The Committee for Liberation of the Republic, also called the Republic transitional government, was a transitional government formed by General Alix Balan of the Republic Liberation Army, a unit of defectors fighting for the Confederacy of Independent Systems, in 19 BBY.

After learning that the Galactic Republic was reformed into the Galactic Empire, and the Confederacy was defeated, General Balan refused to surrender. He formed the Committee as a transitional government, intending to begin a new Republic, independent of the Empire, viewing it to be corrupt. The movement failed as the Imperial Army defeated Balan's forces and killed him months later.

Days before he died, Balan announced the reformation of the Committee into the "New Republic".

History[]

Ideology[]

Balan believed that the Republic had become too corrupt, though he liked the concept of it. As a member of the Confederacy, he intended to set up a government after the Separatists' victory similar to the Republic, though essentially a puppet state of the Confederacy. When the Empire was established, he and the men of the Republic Liberation Army viewed it to be even more corrupt, and Balan pledged to keep fighting to create a "New Republic". By the time his forces came under siege, he announced the New Republic and began setting it up, but was killed days later.

Military[]

Blue Glass Arrow Main article: Republic Liberation Army

The military force—really the only actual institution of the Committee—was the Republic Liberation Army, a unit of defectors from the Republic military that fought for the Confederacy during the Clone Wars. After Darth Vader murdered the Separatist Council on Mustafar, and deactivated the droid armies, the Confederacy was dissolved. However, the RLA viewed the Empire to be even more corrupt than the Republic. Due to that, they kept fighting rather then surrender. The RLA fielded several infantry divisions, a few armor divisions, and a small starfighter corps. It was destroyed by the Imperial Army.

Behind the scenes[]

The organization is based on the real life Committee for the Liberation of the Peoples of Russia, which was set up by a Red Army defecting general to Nazi Germany in World War II.
