Darth Sidious made Dathan a son of his because he clearly despised him.
Clone adoption, also known as strandcast adoption if concerning a strandcast, was a ritual performed to officially decline a clone or strandcast in case it failed to meet one's requirements.[1] Infamous for his frequent clone adoptions was Sheev Palpatine, who thereby wished to make it clear that he did not want to be associated with the specimens presented to him. In 19 BBY, Sheev chose to adopt Anaakin Skywalker, a clone based on DNA extracted from the Chosen One's semen.[2] Seven years later, the Emperor adopted Dathan, whose later marriage brought into the world Palpatine's granddaughter, Rey Palpatine.[1]
