Chromium Squadron was an elite Republic starfighter squadron under the command of Captain Elizabeth Kondarr and led by veteran Imperial pilot Seon Corbeck. The squadron operated out of the Terminus-class destroyer Relinquished.
Chromium Squadron was formed after the crew of the Relinquished defected with the help of Project Petrichor in 28 ATC and took its name from the extensive use of chromium – the ship's cargo at the time of the crew's defection – on the hull of the destroyer, its starfighters and the armour of its pilots.
They served primarily as defenders of the Relinquished and its crew after it became the centre of operations for Project Petrichor, though they occasionally took part in offensive operations to support Petrichor agents on the ground.
Irrespective of their limited role in the wider galactic war, Chromium Squadron pilots were held to a very high standard by Captain Kondarr and had to pass an annual review to continue flying without interruption. If they failed, they entered a probation period during which their shortcomings were addressed.
If they failed again once the probation period expired, they were removed from Chromium Squadron and reassigned to another of the Relinquished's squadrons.
Potential recruits were put through a rigorous training regime to develop their professionalism and hone their instincts, with all hopefuls being tested in the dangerous Zavian Abyss, the site of the Relinquished's defection.
Although the Zavian Abyss was deliberately chosen for its dangerous conditions, aspirants rarely died attempting to qualify as recruits were only selected from pilots already serving aboard the Relinquished and – as such – were already skilled pilots prior to their additional training.
When accidents did happen, however, the Relinquished was on standby with tractor beams to rescue pilots who found themselves in trouble, ensuring that – while tough – the training remained in keeping with the ethics that differentiated the Republic from the Empire.
As Chromium Squadron was formed using stolen Imperial assets the ships employed by its pilots were Imperial in origin and design, including – but not limited to – the S-12 Blackbolt, S-SC4 Bloodmark and B-5 Decimus.
