Broll Kass`l was a male Nagai mercenary, bounty hunter, and assassin who worked for the Merquise Syndicate. He was the elder identical twin brother of Veli Kass`l.
Biography[]
The Kass`l twins were born on Belzior in the Firefist satellite galaxy. They were the sons of the Nagai warlord Lothar Kass`l and his first wife, Arethyne. They spoke little of their origins, although they eventually revealed to Jarek Solios that their father was a warlord. Rebelling against his authoritative personality, the twins fled to the known galaxy. They initially sought work as bounty hunters, though their combat skills eventually led them to branch out into mercenary work and assassination.
In 138 ABY, the twins were on Nar Shaddaa after a successful hit. They sought work with the Merquise Syndicate and were personally hired by its boss, Tak Sakaros. In short order, they were promoted to the Syndicate's Elite Guard. They continued to serve in the Guard after Tak's death, and became trusted agents of Alluria Quinn, the Syndicate's Operations Vigo.
Both twins befriended Jarek Solios when he joined the Syndicate in late 139 ABY; while they found his conscience and moral quandaries amusing, he was always up for a sparring match and they respected his fighting skills. They also became "acquainted" with Odala Van Meer when she became Alluria's Sith apprentice; both Broll and Veli became her lovers (separately and together) until she began to pursue a relationship with Veli.
Broll was one of the few non-Force-sensitives in the Syndicate to fight agents of the One Sith who attacked the Syndicate's personnel. He was wounded in an early engagement, but healed at the Syndicate's medical facility.
Veli and Odala married in 143 ABY after the birth of their daughter Azalyn, with Broll as his brother's best man. Broll doted on his niece while continuing to work for the Syndicate, fighting in its 144 ABY turf war with the Desilijic kajidic. He, along with Veli, Odala, Jarek, Alluria, and most of the Elite Guard hit a meeting of Desilijic leaders, killing several key Hutts and forcing the survivors to end their attacks for a time.
In 146 ABY, Jarek, Alluria, Veli, Odala, and Reiko Kaytana, along with their children, decided to move to peaceful Belsavis to escape the constant violence of Nar Shaddaa. Broll briefly considered staying behind—with Elite Guard chief Tyr replacing Alluria as Operations Vigo, the vacant chief spot was up for grabs—but ultimately decided to follow his brother and niece instead. He did not have much enthusiasm for farming vine coffee, but worked diligently nonetheless. Alluria's sister Selina joined the compound in 147 ABY and began a casual relationship with Broll. Having seen their siblings becoming content with peaceful, quiet living, neither wanted to be tied down in the same way. However, they slowly grew closer to one another.
Following Odala's death at the hands of Darth Maladi in 148 ABY, Broll became increasingly concerned for Veli, who had become depressed and started drinking. Broll and Selina cared for Veli's young son Tae (Azalyn having gone to the Golden Empire by this point) and bonded over the experience. Broll and Jarek worked steadily to keep Veli involved both in the farm's operation and his son's life.
Skills and abilities[]
Like his brother Veli, Broll received extensive training in the use of tehk'la blades from his father and Lothar's Dread Sentinels, particularly Zhezur Tarhy. He could wield the weapons to lethal effect both in knife fighting and as projectiles. Due to his training with the Elite Guard, he was also a skilled practitioner of Var Shek and a mix of other unarmed combat styles. He was trained to use various blaster weapons as well. In his time on Nar Shaddaa, he fought in numerous engagements, and was only wounded when facing Sith Lords.
Appearance and personality[]
Like all Nagai, Broll had black hair, pale white skin, and gray eyes. He stood 1.78 meters (5'10") tall and had a rangy, toned build. He wore his hair collar length and usually dressed in snug-fitting inner garments with loose clothing over them, both of which were designed to ensure combat mobility. He wore blasters on both hips and a bandoleer of tehk'la blades across his chest, as well as carrying longer knives at the back of his belt.
Broll and Veli were inseparable and tended to be able to read one another's moods even without the advantage of the Force. Years of fighting and training together enabled them to work as a team and triumph even against more numerous enemies. Until Azalyn Kass`l was born, Jarek Solios privately speculated that Veli was the only person Broll had ever loved in any way.
Broll's friends considered him both more suave and more aloof than his brother. While Veli eventually fell in love with Odala Van Meer, Broll viewed her the same way she viewed him: as a casual pleasure with no emotional attachment. He was less close to the "extended family" of the Belsavis compound, although he was very close to his brother's family and considered Jarek Solios his closest non-blood friend. Broll enjoyed combat and felt no compunction against killing, even assassinating people in cold blood, but he refused to take part in kidnapping children or the slave trade.
