The Black Republic was a specific time period in the Old Republic's history. Immediately following the Dark Wars, the Republic was struggling to rebuild itself due to the spreading of corruption inside it. This corruption would later make it's way into the Jedi Order. During this grim time, the Jedi had shut themselves off almost completely from the rest of the galaxy, focusing all of their time on dealing with their own problems, essentially leaving everyone else, including the Republic, to fend for themselves. As with the Dark Wars, anti-Jedi movement's were very common during this time, though now, anti-Republic movement's were also starting to form.
In addition to this, a couple of other major threats were impacting the galaxy. A major war had broken out between various factions of the criminal underworld, causing much distress and turmoil to many planet's caught in the crossfire. The worlds in Hutt Space became specially affect by the war, since many Hutt's were being assassinated. The second danger was of surviving HK-50 Units, believed to be all but destroyed. The remaining units had been rallied together by HK-02, who wished to continue the legacy of the infamous HK-01, and start a second Great Droid Revolution. As such, high-ranking residents of various worlds within the Kossa Prime sector were being secretly assassinated by their own droids.
For nearly twenty years The Jedi and the Republic had been struggling to deal with their inner turmoil, but since The Dark Hero united the criminal underworld from war, killed one of the corrupted Jedi Masters and Republic generals, and destroyed HK-02, along with the remaining HK-50 droids, the Republic started going uphill once again. Overtime, most of the corruption has been cleansed of, allowing the rest of the Republic to finally rebuild itself smoothly.
Meanwhile, The Sith Empire, while still in hiding from the rest of the galaxy, was fighting through the darkest moments in its history, the Great Sith Civil War. By the end of the civil war, The Empire had nearly entirely collapsed. The Black Republic period lasted roughly around 3,950 BBY to 3,931 BBY.
Behind the scenes[]
The corruption of the Jedi and the Republic was inspired by the corruption of the church from the late middle-ages and corruption of the police force in the 1920s-1950s.
The isolation of the Jedi Order calls back to the same action they did during the Mandalorian Wars.
