This article is about the prison often nicknamed "Bedlam". You may be looking for the story in which it appears or the capital of Volta rebels.

The Bedacus-Lambrecht Correctional Facility, commonly known as Bedlam, was a prison located the Hirkenglade Prefecture on the planet of Coruscant.

Description[]

The facility was a large building with several cell block units of varying security levels and exercise yards. The facility housed a mixed-gender population in the E-7 Mental Observation Unit, and violent non-compliant offenders were housed in the Hi-Max Unit. There was also a Secure Needs Unit for high-risk inmates.

The cell blocks were designed for oxygen-breathing inmates, there were no airlocked cells. The mental observation unit had a separate airlocked refresher to meet the needs of non-oxygen breathers. Equipment and air supplies for non-oxygen breathers were kept in the facility's infirmary to prevent theft by the other inmates. Prisoners with breath masks were escorted to the infirmary for supply replacements and repairs and were closely monitored by the staff to deter other inmates from using parts of the prisoners' equipment to create shivs.

History[]

Due to government budget cuts, many of Coruscant's residential psychiatric treatment facilities were forced to close. The patients of such facilities were then released, and without adequate support services, many of those individuals had become homeless and a number were arrested and convicted of crime. Since then, many prisons, particularly the Bedacus-Lambrecht Correctional Facility, had seen an influx in the number of mentally-ill individuals who were admitted.[1]

Bedlam was run by Administrator Verloff as of 25 ABY and policed by several units of corrections officers. He ran the facility as if it were a business, preferring to keep the inmates orderly rather than actually rehabilitate them. The other staff members included the Special Response Team, psychiatrists Dr. Gawynn Karastee and Dr. Niederer, corrections officers Dek'rd, Kubisiak, and Makibbin, and the floor wardens Liem Bencar and Unk. As of 28 ABY, Mandak had been hired as a corrections officer, and Dr. Neuchein, an Arkanian psychiatrist, had visited the facility to observe the inmates. Dr. Melmit Waltrap, a Duros psychologist from Republic Central's Behavioral Health Unit, had also visited the facility to assist in behavioral modification and cognitive programming.[2]

In 24 ABY, Pepan Manja, a Kubaz serial killer, was incarcerated in Bedlam. In the latter part of 25 ABY, the Gand findsman Zuckuss was sentenced to the facility for an indefinite period of psychiatric observation. The following year, the Rodian bounty hunter Camilla Sookanado was sentenced for a parole violation.

Behind the scenes[]

The name of the facility was chosen after Trak Nar had titled Breakfast in Bedlam. Goodwood had suggested to name the facility something that could be contracted to "Bedlam" in order to match the title, making it an homage to the original Bedlam. Prior to that, the penal facility was nameless.
