The Battle of Ogana was a battle during the Invasion of Utapau, a conflict between the Trade Federation shipping cartel and the planet of Utapau. The battle, fought between the Trade Federation Droid Army and the Utapau Security Forces, resulted in a victory by the Federation that allowed them to capture Ogana, Utapau’s capital city. Queen Sabé Arcadia, who had been under security protection in the Ogana Royal Palace, ordered her forces to stop fighting what she believed a futile battle and was captured by the Federation forces. After her capture, Arcadia was told by Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray that she would have to sign a treaty that would legitimize the Federation occupation of the planet.
Arcadia refused to sign the treaty, so she was assigned to Federation Camp Four, a Trade Federation concentration camp on the outskirts of Ogana. While en route to the camp, the battle droids assigned to escort her and her advisers were attacked by Jedi Master Jard Dooku, Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and exiled Gungan Prince Jar Binks. The three rescued the queen and her people before bringing them to a starship that managed to escape the Federation blockade in orbit around the planet.

Trade Federation landing crafts begin their invasion of Utapau in 22 BBY.
In 22 BBY, the Trade Federation shipping cartel invaded Utapau in retaliation for the planet’s support of the Republic Anti-Slavery Law, which forbid Galactic Republic corporations such as the Trade Federation from using slave workers outside of Republic territory. The Federation blockaded the planet for one month in order to cut off trade, but a full invasion was launched after Jedi Master Jard Dooku and Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi arrived on the Federation command ship as ambassadors for Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum to reach a settlement. The Jedi were seen as a threat, so the Federation accelerated their plans in order to avoid being stopped.[3]
Once the Trade Federation Droid Army landed on the surface, the droid commander OOM-9 informed Dark Jedi Master Maul, the overall commander of the invasion, that the army would take Utapau’s capital city of Ogana. Before moving to Ogana, however, the army would take the cities of New Centrif, Harte Secur and Spinnaker. The Trade Federation first launched the Battle of New Centrif where they destroyed the final remaining communications array on the planet, cutting off all communications on Utapau,[4] before moving onto campaigns in Harte Secur and Spinnaker. Before her city fell to the Federation, New Centrif Mayor Arruinada attempted to send a message to Ogana in order to warn Utapau Queen Sabé Arcadia of the invasion force headed towards Ogana, but the Federation forces reached the capital before the message arrived due to the communication interference on the planet.[5]

After taking Spinnaker, the Federation forces invaded Ogana and began sending B-1 battle droids and Armored Assault Tanks through the streets. Captain Panaka, the queen’s head of security and leader of the Utapau Security Forces, took his security officers and began fighting back against the incoming Federation army. Arcadia, sensing that the battle was futile, eventually ordered the resistance to cease their defense in order to spare the lives of her forces.[1] At Panaka’s behest, Arcadia was taken to her throne room for protection, where she finally received the message sent by Arruinada. As Arcadia and her advisers listened to the message, a group of battle droids broke into the throne room and took them prisoner.[5]
Following Arcadia's capture, Federation forces continued to make their way into the city. Battle droids began to raid numerous buildings and pull out the citizens inside, grouping the citizens together so they would be able to transport them to prison-holdings. These concentration camps were put into accelerated construction on the outskirts of the city so citizens would be able to be housed there immediately. Some citizens, such as an unidentified woman who fatally attacked the battle droid Blue Seven, attempted to fight back against their droid captors but were either killed or stopped. Federation forces ran patrols through the city during this time, while droid starfighters ran patrols from overhead.[1]
Hours later, Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray arrived on the planet and met with Arcadia. Gunray ordered that Arcadia sign a treaty to legitimize the Federation occupation of the planet. Arcadia refused, so Gunray ordered that she and her advisers be taken to Federation Camp Four, a concentration camp on the outskirts of the city. While en route to the camp, the battle droids escorting the royal delegation were attacked by Dooku, Kenobi and exiled Crowned Prince of the Gungan Empire Jar Binks. The droids were destroyed, and Panaka escorted the group to a nearby hangar once the two Jedi requested a transport to reach Coruscant, the capital of the Galactic Republic. Arcadia agreed to travel with them and, after dispatching droids guarding a number of pilots in the hangar, the ship left the planet.[1]

After escaping Ogana, Queen Arcadia's ship traveled into orbit where it was attacked by the Trade Federation blockade. The vessel was nearly destroyed when its shield generator was damaged, but the damages were repaired by an astromech droid called R2-D2. The vessel was able to escape the blockade and set a course for the desert planet of Tatooine, where the Jedi believed they would be able to safely make repairs to the ship despite the presence of the Hutt Cartel gangsters on the planet. On Utapau, Gunray informed Lord Maul that the queen’s vessel had escaped and that the Federation was unable to locate it, so Maul decided to search for the ship himself.[5] Hours later, Arcadia agreed to let the ship continue towards Tatooine, where it arrived the next day and crashed in the desert outside the Anchorhead settlement due to impacting with a sandstorm.[6]
While the queen was on Tatooine, numerous citizens rose up to rebel against the Federation forces in Ogana, prompting the Federation to fight back against them. During the conflict, known as the Rebellion in Ogana, a group of Utapau Advisory Council and Utapau Security Forces members, including Ogana Governor Sio Bibble and Lieutenant Chamberlyn, founded the Veermok Resistance, an organized rebel force that would launch insurgent strikes against the Federation.[2]
Legacy[]
The Battle of Ogana was remembered by the people of Utapau as being the conflict that solidified the Trade Federation’s hold over the entire planet for the duration of the Federation occupation. It also caused the people to feel fortunate that the planet had not been touched by an outside war since the invasion of the Mandalorian Clans during the Battle of Utapau in the Great Sovereign Crusades, a conflict that had erupted in 3,522 BBY between the Mandalorians, the Republic and the Third Sith Empire.[1]
Behind the scenes[]
The Battle of Ogana is the Alternative Star Wars Saga fan fiction series version of the First Battle of Theed,[7] a canon conflict from the Invasion of Naboo depicted in the film Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.[8] The battle was re-imagined for the fan fiction novel Star Wars: Episode I - The Chosen One by author Brandon Rhea. The events portrayed in the novel also appeared in the novel's first draft, where they were relatively similar to the current incarnation. Rhea did, however, add in new elements featuring Queen Arcadia and Jar Binks to begin what Rhea describes as an “unlikely friendship” between the two characters.[7]
