A snowspeeder attacks AT-AT walkers during the Battle of Hoth.
The Battle of Hoth occurred in 3 ABY and resulted in a victory for the Galactic Empire and one of the worst defeats suffered by the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War. This battle began with an Imperial invasion that was aimed at destroying the hidden Rebel Echo Base that was located on the ice planet of Hoth. The location of this base was revealed when a viper probe droid was deployed to Hoth, at the command of Darth Vader. When the Imperial fleet entered the Hoth system, they inadvertently alerted the Alliance to their presence, which gave them some time to evacuate.
The Imperial attack consisted of AT-AT walkers, and they were charged with destroying the base's primary power generator, which would allow the orbital bombardment of the planet. Rogue Squadron led the defense of the base, however their snowspeeders' blaster cannons lacked the firepower to penetrate the AT-ATs' thick armor. It was only after Luke Skywalker suggested that they use their tow cables to trip the massive vehicles, did the Rebels gain an advantage.
However, despite their efforts, the power generator was destroyed. The remaining personnel were evacuated as the 501st Legion stormed the base, and the battle proved to be a major victory for the Empire.
