Rise of the Empire era

The corruption in the Republic cannot be fixed. I think we need to start over.
—General Alix Balan

Alix Balan was a general in the Grand Army of the Republic before defecting to the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars. A distinguished tactician in the Galactic Republic, he was originally a member of a militia force in the Core Worlds. When the conflict with the Separatists broke out in 22 BBY, Balan was placed in command of the 903rd Star Corps. After being ordered to carry out a cruel punishment upon the people of Iktotch, he was disgusted, and defected with his unit to the CIS. He negotiated with Count Dooku, who put him in command of all Republic defectors in the CIS, organizing them into the Republic Liberation Army.

During the Clone Wars, he fought on several fronts, leading the RLA forces personally. Despite being disliked by much of the Separatist high command, his troops scored many victories for the CIS. Balan began planning to set up a "New Republic" after the CIS won the war, as a puppet government of theirs. When the Confederacy was defeated in 19 BBY, Balan refused to surrender. The RLA kept fighting, and he founded the Committee for Liberation of the Republic. As they were nearing defeat, he nonetheless set up the "New Republic". Days later, his New Republic was dissolved when he was killed by the Imperial Army. His troops fought to the last man.

Biography[]

Early career[]

Balan began serving the Republic at some point before the outbreak of the Clone Wars, as a colonel in a militia that was tasked with protecting the Core Worlds. He was a competent officer, and reached the rank of general. When the war with the Separatists began, the militia was incorporated into the ranks of the new Grand Army of the Republic. Balan served as a general in it, and was deployed with Mace Windu and Saesee Tiin to the planet of Iktotch in the Expansion Region. He commanded the 903rd Star Corps, a clone unit. There, he was ordered to carry out a cruel punishment on the native population by his commander, due to their Separatist ties. Disgusted, Balan refused, and was threatened by the commander. Due to that experience, Balan surrendered himself and his men to the CIS.
