Adegan crystals were rare, Force-attuned crystals that grew in nature and were found on scattered planets across the galaxy. They were used by Force-adepts such as the Jedi, fallen Jedi, and Sith in the construction of their lightsabers. As part of Jedi training, apprentices were sent to collect the crystals in order to construct their own lightsabers. There were also larger, rarer crystals of great power that were used at the heart of ancient superweapons.

Description[]

Adegan crystals were Force-attuned crystals that grew rarely but throughout the Galaxy, with some areas having a greater abundance than others. The crystals concentrated energy in a unique manner through the Force, resonating with it.

Internally, Adegan crystals were composed of both organic and inorganic matter. They were stable at temperatures and pressures found in the cores of stars and gas giants, and were thus resistant to heat and physical stresses. The crystals grew in an organized way, adding to their prismatic structure one piece at a time, and thus could be found from sizes as small as a fingernail to gigantic proportions. All Adegan crystals were attuned to the Force regardless of their size.

Adegan crystals were most notably found in the Adega system, though a fair amount of these crystals could also be found on the planets Ilum, Dantooine, Halm, and Mygeeto. They were a critical component in the construction of most lightsabers, generating the energy which formed the weapon's distinct plasma blade. Force-adepts travelled to crystal deposits to harvest their own crystals, which they then used to build their lightsabers. Crystals lacked colour before they were chosen by Force-adepts. Once chosen, the crystals were meditated upon with the Force, upon which they attained hues influenced by the adepts' psyches or preferences.

The crystals were noted for their unmatched ability to channel energy and generate enormous returns. To this end, numerous individuals attempted to make synthetic Adegan crystals, though synthesis was difficult and the resultant crystals were often highly unstable and explosive. If a crystal was subjected to forceful attempts to harness its innate power, it would "flee" such attempts, hindering those that sought to use it against its will. Only Force-adepts could easily harness the power of the Adegan crystal. This was done either by the adept forming a rapport with the crystal, or by using the Force to dominate the crystal, bending it to their will. Galen Erso theorized that larger crystals needed to be faceted, not only to eliminate occlusions, but also to minimize diffraction resulting from the introduction of energy from a lasing medium. With proper faceting, the pulse of energy released by the crystal could be greatly amplified and, with the help of containment devices, provide inexpensive power for developing worlds, or be directed into a beam of incredible power; as was used on the DS-1 battle station. Galen Erso also theorized that increased energy yield could be further attained by forcing what the Jedi called the "day and night" lattices of the crystals to realign. By realigning the crystals' lattices along the dark or nighttime axis of the Force, Galen postulated that it could allow for greater control over the crystal's tendency to diffract. Thus, technology could be used to force the crystals to obey their masters. The abundant yield could then be siphoned off, contained, and used as enriched energy. Without containment, the yield could result in a catastrophic event, capable of wiping out a large population center.

History[]

The ancient Sith made prodigious use of Adegan crystals. Sith amulets utilized natural Adegan crystals, as did some warblades, while most Sith technology utilized synthetic crystals. During the Sith Civil War, in which the Old Kissai and the Dissidents fought for control over the Sith Empire, superweapons were created by both sides that were powered by giant Adegan crystals. These superweapons were capable of destroying whole stars by reaching into their depths and wrenching out their cores, destabilizing them, causing them to go supernova.

After the Proclamation of the New Order and the Great Jedi Purge, Emperor Dantius Palpatine and his Empire began construction of the Death Star, a battle station capable of destroying entire planets. Adegan crystals were used as part of the Death Star's superlaser and Galen Erso was brought on as the main researcher under Project Celestial Power. Adegan crystals were looted from Jedi lightsabers, holy sites, and worlds where they could be found.

Types of Adegan crystal[]

  • Kathracite was the most common form of Adegan crystal, followed by relacite and danite. These crystals didn't generate energy as well as their rarer cousins, and thus were usually reserved for use in training sabers.
  • Mephite was a typical Adegan crystal used by Force-adepts.
  • Pontite was the rarest and most powerful type of Adegan crystal. Nearly impossible to find, it resonated with a powerful aura that cooled both skin and tempers.
