Behind the scenes[]

A Reprieve from Good was the first story in the Nights in Nar Shaddaa Series that doesn't include any of the characters previously introduced in the Tag Tomo article. It's also the first story to be written for the series after Nemeth's six month hiatus from the site. The story was originally supposed to be a character article with the character's biography resembling the movie Pain & Gain but Nemeth eventually decided to change it into a short story in order for the writing of a possible character article to be easier which was the entire point of the series in the first place. The idea for the story changed once again as it ultimately drew inspiration from the movie Only God Forgives instead. The cover art was also inspired by the movie.

While creating the story, Nemeth didn't want the main character to be human feeling that there were too many stories with human protagonists. Nemeth also took on a minimalist approach to writing the story, rarely describing the settings and not delving in at all on what the characters looked liked, what race they were or even what their names were. This was done deliberately in hopes that the characters would be defined by their actions, thoughts and dialogue.
