Plot summary[]

Academy Arc[]

After an introductory chapter featuring a flashback to 9 BBY, the reader is presented to Ralia Arryn, future Colonel of the Galactic Empire, at the very beginning of her journey. A fifteen-year-old Arryn spends her birthday with friends and family, unaware of what is bound to happen to her parents only days later.

She begins her education at the Royal Imperial Academy a year younger than most of her classmates, forced to enter early by her own desire for revenge. She fights against ill-wishing rivals amongst the other cadets who are disposed to sabotaging each other's scores for recognition and success. However, she also encounters friendly faces, such as her two roommates, one of whom she eventually begins dating. Their relationship is cut short by Arryn's acceptance into a selective course at the specialized ISB Academy.

Internship Arc[]

Arryn enters the several month-long course at the ISB Academy, where she is assigned to her preferred career track, Interrogation. Her classes feature hands-on experience such as practiced torture sessions. At the end of the course, she is assigned to an internship on Coruscant, under the mentorship of Major Darius Brexel, who is in the middle of investigating a series of crimes in the planet's underworld. Brexel teaches Arryn his ways of fighting and his life philosophy. When he's shot dead at the end of the investigations, Arryn chases down the murderer and kills someone for the first time in her life.

Junior Officer Arc[]

However, this new change also exposes her mood swings and Arryn falls into depression after seeing the amount of personnel injured or dead. She cannot sleep or focus on her tasks, and Captain Naxus sends her to Coruscant to take a break from work. She visits her old apartment and her parents' graves and then meets Quania Reist, an old Academy friend who Arryn dated for a short period of time.

Quania and Arryn spend a day together, and Arryn seems to recover a bit. The next day is Arryn's birthday, and the news she receives instead of a gift is the news of Quania's death. Shocked and devastated, Arryn loses her mind completely and heads to the Coruscant underworld to unwind. She ends up killing a citizen who expresses his unhappiness with the Empire, and realizes that she now needs violence as much as she needs food and water.

Arryn returns to the Vindicator, and the rebels responsible for the hangar destruction are soon captured. She reveals more and more torture skills as she holds them captive. However, Agent Hasala disapproves of her violent methods and stands up to Arryn, which results in her being sent away from the ISD. Aithriel reveals her Force sensitivity by attempting to choke Arryn, but Arryn only calls the Imperial Inquisitorius to collect the valuable prisoners. The battle of Endor happens just several weeks later. Hasala is captured by a rebel cell on her own mission. The rebel prisoners never reach the Inquisitorius as the Empire falls apart and they are rescued on their way there.

Arryn joins an Imperial remnant and, despite wanting to fight at Jakku or Coruscant, is promoted to Inspector General and told to stay behind as she is too valuable to risk her life in these battles. She stays with the Queluhan Nebula Imperial remnant until it is attacked in 7 ABY. She separates from it to start her own remnant which is famous for its brutal attacks on any enemy ships she can locate, and promises not to rest until her enemies are all razed to cinders.
